Georgia Tech deals Miami its first loss

Georgia Tech pulls off a stunner in ACC play

Georgia Tech wrecked Miami’s dreams of an undefeated season.

The Yellow Jackets downed the Hurricanes on Saturday in ACC play, 28-23.

After Georgia Tech punted to Miami late, the Yellow Jackets created a strip sack of Heisman Trophy candidate Cam Ward to ice the victory.

Haynes King rush for 93 yards and a score and Jamal Haynes had 83 rushing yards and a touchdown in the upset.

King’s rushing touchdown gave Tech a 28-16 lead in the fourth quarter.

The Hurricanes got a score on a TD pass from Ward but were unable to do anything else.

Ward threw for 348 yards and three touchdowns in the loss. Miami was fourth in the College Football Playoff rankings.

Broadcast information revealed for Duke basketball game against Georgia Tech

Duke basketball announced the time and TV schedule for its December game against Georgia Tech.

The Duke Blue Devils announced on Wednesday that the men’s basketball team would play its December 21 game against Georgia Tech at noon Eastern time on ACC Network.

The Yellow Jackets will play their first game of the 2024-25 campaign on Wednesday night, but they finished last season with a 14-18 after losing 13 of their 20 conference games.

Duke opened the year with a 96-62 victory over Maine on Monday night thanks to 40 combined points from five-star freshmen [autotag]Kon Knueppel[/autotag] and [autotag]Cooper Flagg[/autotag]. Flagg, who announced his college basketball debut with a one-handed dunk in the first half, led the team with seven rebounds, five assists, and three steals while Knueppel buried three 3-pointers.

The Blue Devils played Georgia Tech twice in 2023-24, splitting the season series after a 72-68 road loss in December. Duke won its home game over the Yellow Jackets by five points in January thanks to a 30-point, 13-rebound performance from [autotag]Kyle Filipowski[/autotag].

Georgia Tech replaces special teams coach amidst struggles

Georgia Tech is naming Tim Salem special teams coach for the rest of the season after announcing Ricky Brumfield is no longer with the program.

A two sentence press release from the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on Tuesday revealed Ricky Brumfield, the associate head coach for special teams, is no longer with the program.

Tim Salem, a senior adviser to head coach Brent Key, will assume the role of special teams coach for the rest of the season. The team did not disclose why Brumfield had been replaced, or why he did not accompany the team to Saturday’s game, a 21-6 loss to Virginia Tech.

Georgia Tech had significant issues on special teams in the loss to Notre Dame back on Oct. 19, including having a field goal attempt blocked and another failed attempt on a dropped snap. The team also gave up a 27-yard gain on a fake punt by the Fighting Irish.

After that game, coach Key said “special teams for three weeks now have not been up to expectations,” continuing to call the unit “unacceptable” and saying he would “make the adjustments necessary. … And that’s the decisions I have to make, and I’ve made.”

The Yellow Jackets are 5-4 on the year and 3-3 in ACC play heading into a bye week. They will host the undefeated Miami Hurricanes on Nov. 9.

Notre Dame Week 8 highlight: Adon Shuler takes it to the house

Notre Dame’s Adon Shuler puts a stamp on it against Georgia Tech

Not to be outdone by teammate Xavier Watts, Notre Dame Fighting Irish safety Adon Shuler has an interception against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.

In fact, Shuler did Watts one better by returning the errant pass from Yellow Jackets’ quarterback Zach Pyron 36 yards to the end zone for a pick-six.

The touchdown put an exclamation point on the Fighting Irish’s win over the Yellow Jackets. As it stands after the pick, the score is 31-7 late in the fourth quarter.

Notre Dame had just missed a field goal as it looked to put Georgia Tech away. The pick-six seems like a nice consolation prize.

Notre Dame Week 8 highlight: Fake field-goal run earns first down, seals win against Georgia Tech

Notre Dame runs a fake field goal to keep the ball and seal the deal against Georgia Tech

With the Notre Dame Fighting Irish up 24-7 over the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets with 4:16 to go in the fourth quarter, it seemed inevitable that the Irish would attempt a field goal when their drive stalled out.

Instead, they ran a fake field goal with Chris Salerno getting just enough yardage on the ground to earn a first down and keep the drive alive.

It’s clear that the Irish were looking to keep the ball and burn clock as opposed to taking the points and giving the ball back to Georgia Tech. Perhaps Notre Dame is also looking to run up the score a bit to make a statement as it fights to earn a playoff spot.

Notre Dame Week 8 highlight: Fake punt keeps key drive alive against Georgia Tech

Notre Dame gets a big fake-punt run from Jeremiyah Love.

Fake punts are almost always a risky proposition, but the Notre Dame Fighting Irish pulled one off against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. The successful fake kept an important late-game drive alive for the Fighting Irish.

It’s officially listed as a pass from linebacker Tommy Powlus to running back Jeremiyah Love for a loss of 8 yards and a first down — perhaps the online live score needs some tweaking. Either way, Love did carry the ball for a first down on a reverse.

Unfortunately the Irish were unable to turn the special-teams trickery into a game-sealing touchdown, but a made 42-yard field goal by backup kicker Zac Yoakam at least made it a three-score game.

Notre Dame Week 8 highlight: Xavier Watts interception kills Georgia Tech drive

Xavier Watts with a huge pick for Notre Dame.

The contest in Atlanta between the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets hasn’t exactly been a back-and-forth shootout, but momentum has mattered. Just ask Notre Dame safety Xavier Watts.

It looked like Notre Dame had the momentum it needed to close out the ballgame with a 21-7 lead after defensive lineman Bryce Young blocked a field goal. But the Yellow Jackets responded by stopping Notre Dame quarterback Riley Leonard from running for a first down on fourth-and-5.

On the second play of the ensuing drive, Yellow Jackets QB Zach Pyron’s pass was picked off by Watts.

Notre Dame Week 8 highlight: Blocked field goal keeps Georgia Tech off the board

Kick block by Bryce Young looms huge for Notre Dame against Georgia Tech.

It looked like the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets were getting some momentum back against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

Georgia Tech had forced a Notre Dame punt and then poor tackling by the Irish led to a 60-yard pass from Zach Pyron to Abdul Janneh Jr. But the Notre Dame defense responded by snuffing out two GT runs and then sacking Pyron, as Rylie Mills and Jaylen Sneed combined to make the play.

This set up a 35-yard field-goal attempt by Aidan Birr that Notre Dame defensive lineman Bryce Young appeared to get a hand on.

Notre Dame Week 8 highlight: Jeremiyah Love keeps touchdown streak alive

Jeremiyah Love puts Notre Dame up by two scores.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish running back Jeremiyah Love has kept his season-long rushing touchdown streak alive.

Love found the end zone on a 1-yard touchdown run that capped off a 6-play, 60-yard drive that took 3:10 off the clock and put the Irish up 21-7 over the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.

Love now has a rushing touchdown in every single game this season.

The key play of the drive was the play just before, when Notre Dame quarterback Riley Leonard found wide receiver Beaux Collins for a 15-yard pass that set the Irish up at the goal line.

The scoring drive was a key momentum shift. The Irish escaped the first half with a 14-7 lead after Georgia Tech fumbled a field goal attempt. The Yellow Jackets had the ball to start the second half, but the Notre Dame defense forced a punt that led to the scoring drive and Love touchdown.

Notre Dame still has work to do to put Georgia Tech away, but the second half has started much better for the Irish than the first did.

Notre Dame Week 8 highlight: Riley Leonard does it again

Notre Dame quarterback Riley Leonard uses his legs again.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish quarterback Riley Leonard really does use his legs as a weapon.

He’s now accounted for both of Notre Dame’s first two touchdowns against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets as he pulled the ball back on a run-pass option and scampered for a 12-yard touchdown to give the Fighting Irish a 14-7 lead.

Leonard’s run finished off a 5-play, 68-yard drive that took 2:51 off the clock.

Notre Dame looks a lot more settled after a first quarter in which the Fighting Irish struggled on both sides of the football.

While Leonard had the touchdown run, Beaux Collins had two key catches of 11 yards and Kris Mitchell and Jeremiyah Love each had big receptions — 14 yards for Mitchell and Love for 25. Love showed running ability after the catch.
