Halftime Report: Clemson leads Georgia Tech 21-7 as the Tigers’ offense starts to hit its stride

Clemson is playing great football right now after a slow start to their game against Georgia Tech.

Dabo Swinney and the Clemson football came into this matchup against Georgia Tech after a big win over Notre Dame, and the Tigers have carried that momentum into this game against the Yellow Jackets.

The Tigers lead the Yellow Jackets 21-7, and it has been mostly all Clemson today. If Clemson hadn’t foolishly faked a punt on their own side of the field to set up an easy score for Georgia Tech, this game could have been 21-0.

Clemson’s defense has been solid today, but I can’t say they’ve been great. Like it could be 21-0, it could also be much closer as the Yellow Jackets have dropped an easy touchdown catch and a tougher deep ball that went through the wide receiver’s hands. It’s been good but not great.

On offense, Clemson’s run game turned things on in the 2nd quarter. Between Phil Mafah and Will Shipley, we’ve seen some excellent running. Shipley, in particular, looks excellent, with eight carries for 66 yards and a 32-yard touchdown run. He added 21 receiving yards in the first half.

Starting quarterback Cade Klubnik has been great, completing 16-22 passes for 135 yards and two touchdowns. It has easily been his best start to a game this season, as he’s made smart decisions and utilized his feet well.

True Freshman wide receiver Tyler Brown had one of the best touchdown catches you’ll see this season, climbing the ladder for a one-handed touchdown. It was a great first half for the Tigers.

Tyler Brown climbs the ladder for a highlight reel touchdown catch.

Clemson true freshman Tyler Brown just made one of the best catches of any player this season throughout the entire landscape of college football.

On 3rd down in the red zone, Brown climbed the ladder to make an absurd one-handed 3-yard touchdown catch. A fadeaway grab, Brown showed supreme athleticism and poise, getting up there for the grab and securing the ball.

This touchdown gave the Tigers a 14-7 lead and further swung momentum Clemson’s way. If you haven’t heard of Brown before this play, this is a fine introduction showing what this true freshman wide receiver is capable of.

Klubnik finds Collins in the end zone to tie things at 7 against Georgia Tech

Collins made a nice catch in the end zone to tie things up in the 2nd quarter.

After another slow start to a game for this Clemson offense, they finally put together a good drive in the 2nd quarter and tied things up at 7 against Georgia Tech.

It was an 18-play 75-yard drive that took 9:51 of the clock as the Tigers worked their way downfield at their own pace. It was a solid mix of pass and run, with wide receiver Beaux Collins being the star of the drive.

Collins had a big 20-yard catch on 4th and 7, extending the Clemson drive and later setting up a score for himself. On 3rd and 5, Klubnik delivered a solid ball in the end zone for Collins, who came down with a tough touchdown catch.

With the Clemson defense playing excellent football, momentum could swing in the Tigers’ direction with another strong drive.

Clemson starting linebacker Barrett Carter out against Georgia Tech

Barrett Carter wasn’t on the injury report, but the star linebacker is not dressed for this matchup against Georgia Tech.

Dabo Swinney and the Tigers have a big ACC matchup today against Georgia Tech, and from the look of it, they will be without one of their best players on the defensive side of the ball.

Clemson star linebacker Barrett Carter wasn’t on the team’s injury report, but Carter was seen in street clothes on the sideline at Memorial Stadium in Death Valley. Street clothes mean Carter will not play against the Yellow Jackets in this game.

This is a big loss for the Tigers’ defense, as Carter has been a standout alongside Jeremiah Trotter Jr. this season. The Tigers will also be without safety. Jalyn Phillips is also in street clothes.

Clemson wide receiver out for Georgia Tech game

Clemson’s wide receiver room will be even more thin for Saturday’s game against Georgia Tech.

A Clemson wide receiver will not suit up for the Tigers’ game against Georgia Tech on Saturday.

After dealing with multiple injuries to the wide receiver room this season, Clemson will have to make do without Brannon Spector, who is expected to be unavailable for Saturday, Clemson Athletics has announced.

Playing in all nine of Clemson’s games this year, Spector has four receptions for 25 yards.

Along with Spector, Clemson will be without Antonio Williams, who suffered a toe injury in late October and has not played since then. Heading into Saturday, Spector was listed as the backup slot receiver to true freshman Tyler Brown.

Cornerback Sheridan Jones and safety R.J. Mickens are also expected to be unavailable, as head coach Dabo Swinney announced earlier this week.

The good news for the Tigers is that running back Will Shipley is expected to play after missing last week with a concussion.

Kickoff between Clemson and Georgia Tech is at noon.

Coming into Saturday, both Clemson (5-4) and Georgia Tech (5-4) are looking to win a sixth game and become bowl-eligible.

The Tigers are coming off their best win of the season last week, a 31-23 victory over Notre Dame. Meanwhile, the Yellow Jackets have won their last two games against North Carolina and Virginia.

That said, here are five Clemson players to watch closely on Saturday:

Our staff score predictions for Clemson vs. Georgia Tech

Our staff score predictions for Clemson’s home Week 11 matchup against Georgia Tech.

Dabo Swinney and the Tigers have another home matchup in Week 11 following a statement 31-23 win over then No.15 ranked Notre Dame.

This week, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets come to Death Valley, a team that has been no stranger to an upset this season. The Yellow Jackets have played far better football than many expected this season, and they enter this matchup looking to hand one of those upsets to Clemson in front of the Tigers’ home crowd.

As we do every week, the staff gathered and made score predictions for Saturday’s matchup against Georgia Tech. Here is a look at what we are thinking heading into the Week 11 matchup.

Three reasons Clemson keeps momentum with a decisive win over Georgia Tech in Week 11

Here are three reasons Clemson will keep momentum and pick up another decisive win over Georgia Tech this Saturday.

Dabo Swinney and the Tigers’ win over Notre Dame last Saturday was as needed as they come, and Clemson will look to continue that momentum into this Saturday’s Week 11 matchup against Georgia Tech.

The Yellow Jackets won’t be easy to get past, as they’ve delivered on multiple upsets this season against top teams in the ACC. Will Clemson be the next to fall the Georgia Tech, or will they take what they showed against the Fighting Irish and run with it?

There is no better place to do it than Death Valley, and you best believe this team is hungry for more wins. Here are three reasons Clemson will pick up a momentum-keeping win over Georgia Tech.

Clemson’s Defensive X-Factor for Week 11 vs. Georgia Tech

This Clemson linebacker will have to be all over the field Saturday to slow down Haynes King and the Georgia Tech offense.

Similar to our offensive choice for this week, our Defensive X-Factor for Week 11 against Georgia Tech is coming off arguably his best game of the season.

You need big-time players to step up and make plays for your team when you have big games. That is exactly what star linebacker Jeremiah Trotter Jr. did in the Tigers’ huge win over Notre Dame.

Trotter showed everyone why he is one of the best players in college football last Saturday as he totaled 11 tackles, 2 sacks, 2.5 tackles for loss, and a pick-six. It was a superstar performance from a superstar player, and we will see another performance like this against the Yellow Jackets for the Tigers to earn their sixth win of the season.

Georgia Tech has been a surprise success this season, and much of that has been behind starting quarterback Haynes King’s breakout. King is a unique talent that can beat you with his arm and his legs. That’s where Trotter is key in this matchup.

The All-American linebacker is a jack-of-all-trades player and is capable of locking down in the passing game while arguably being the best-run defending linebacker in all of college football. He’ll have to be all over the field on Saturday to slow King down, but if anyone can do it, it’s Trotter.

Clemson’s Offensive X-Factor for Week 11 vs. Georgia Tech

Like last week, this Clemson running back will need a strong showing for the Tigers’ offense to perform at a high level.

Last week, heading into a huge matchup against Notre Dame, our Offensive X-Factor was Phil Mafah, as the only way the Tigers would stand a chance against the Fighting Irish was if they could establish the run. Well, Mafah did that and then some.

Even with the return of starting running back Will Shipley, Mafah is our Offensive X-Factor once again this week as the Tigers head into a Week 11 matchup against the Yellow Jackets. Shipley will undoubtedly be a significant piece of Clemson’s offense on Saturday, but what Mafah showed us last weekend is simply impossible to ignore.

Mafah was elite against the Fighting Irish defense, running for a career-high 186 yards and two touchdowns as the focal point of the Clemson offense. It was a superstar-making performance from the junior running back and one he will look to translate into the matchup against Georgia Tech.

It should be another big game for him, too, as the Yellow Jackets run defense has been exploitable this season. Expect another strong performance from Mafah as he looks to cement himself as the guy in Clemson’s offense.
