Report: Georgia baseball player practicing with football team

Report: Georgia baseball player practicing with football team

While it is not uncommon for college athletes to play multiple sports, most start their collegiate careers already established with their respective teams. However, this is not the case for Georgia baseball outfielder Randon Jernigan.

Jernigan, who has started almost 50 games for the Dawgs, has begun taking reps at wide receiver with the Georgia football team, per Anthony Dasher of UGA Sports.

Currently in the 2022 season, Jernigan is batting .500 with limited playing time, and he has recorded six runs scored and two RBIs.

Scott Stricklin, the head baseball coach, told Dasher:

“He’s a great athlete who can hopefully transition into football as he enters graduate school after this fall. He is still a part of our baseball team and will continue to be for the rest of the reason.”

In high school, Jernigan played both wide receiver and quarterback at Glenn Academy, and in 2017 he lead his team to the state semifinals. Check out one of his highlights playing quarterback in the video below.

The Aggies (17-9, 2-4 SEC) led the series 2-0 and was leading Georgia 4-1 on Sunday before the Bulldogs started to make a comeback in the seventh inning. There were two Georgia outs before RBI-singles from Josh McAllister, Connor Tate and Riley King. A wild pitch from Aggie left-hander Will Johnston brought Tate home to give Georgia a 5-4 lead.

Then, with two outs in the eight, McAllister made it 6-4 with his team-leading fifth home run of the season, which made it a three hit day for the redshirt junior.

Freshman right hander Jaden Woods got his first win of the season in the Dawgs victory, allowing one run on three hits with three strikeouts in four innings.

Georgia finishes a four game road trip on Tuesday when it faces Clemson (12-9) at 6:02 p.m. on the ACC Network.

Where’s the love? UGA Baseball still unranked in major polls

The Georgia Bulldogs baseball team is being slept on by quite a few pollsters

Despite compiling an impressive 10-3 record to start the season, the Georgia baseball team has not cracked the top 25 in the D1Baseball or Baseball America’s polls.

To give the pollsters credit, the Bulldogs have played a relatively light nonconference schedule. Georgia will face much improved competition in a few weeks during SEC play, but its best win is Georgia State or Georgia Southern.

Georgia lost its top two starting pitchers, Emerson Hancock and Cole Wilcox, to the MLB draft last year, but it is still ranked No. 22 in the nation in team ERA. This includes teams from the Big Ten and Mid-American Conference who have only played 2-3 games as well.

Are the Dawgs being slept on? It sure seems like it …

See Notre Dame football commit Thomas troll baseball Twitter page

Irish signee Jayden Thomas was a bit confused when a certain Tweet said he was uncommitted.

Signing day has come and gone for the Notre Dame football team, Georgia’s wide receiver Jayden Thomas included in that group. On Friday, the Prep Baseball Report posted a tweet about Thomas being an uncommitted baseball prospect. It’s safe to say, Thomas didn’t take to kindly to the tweet.

Obviously Thomas is a very talented baseball player, but he’s chosen to focus on football at the next level. Could he be a dual-sport athlete in South Bend? Sure, but it seems like Thomas will be going after his gridiron dreams first before his diamond ones.

The Georgia baseball team will begin its 2021 season on February 19th in Athens.

However, the offseason polls and articles have not been too kind to the Dawgs.

Southern Slams Baseball, which covers the sport across the South, ranked the Bulldogs No. 11 in the SEC for their uniform list.

Now, the brand has announced that Georgia also falls quite low in its best atmosphere poll for the conference. Now, before turning your anger to the folks at Southern Slams, remember that this was voted on by fans across the nation.

Arkansas took home the top honors of the poll, while Texas A&M and Mississippi State gave it a great run.

With baseball season just around the corner, the Southern Slams Baseball staff put together a list of the top uniforms in the SEC.

The college baseball website ranked all 14 SEC teams from the bottom to the top, but Georgia came in quite low unfortunately.

The Bulldogs ranked 11th out of all 14 teams in the list, with the change to ‘Bulldog Bold’ branding hurting the Dawgs in their rank according to Southern Slams’ Justin Royce.

Georgia baseball falls just outside Top 25

The Georgia baseball team will start the season just outside the Top 25

The Georgia baseball team will return to the diamond on February 19th at Foley Field.

After a strong start to the COVID-19 shortened 2020 season, the Bulldogs lost top pitching aces Emerson Hancock and Cole Wilcox.

Now, the Dawgs will look to build off their strong 2018 and 2019 seasons with a less experienced starting pitching staff.

As a result, Georgia fell just outside the Top 25 in Southern Slams’ latest preseason poll.

Rivals Florida, Georgia Tech, South Carolina, Auburn and Tennessee all made the list, although the Dawgs did receive votes.

Let’s see if Georgia can climb into the Top 25 as the season progresses.
