Georgetown at St. John’s picks and predictions

Prediction

St. John’s 86, Georgetown 75

An SJU lean but not an actionable one. STEER CLEAR.

Against the spread

The favorite is 4-1 ATS in the last 5 series meetings, so St. John’s is perhaps worth a line watch here. The Red Storm have some key advantages in the turnover and rebounding facets of the game.

In-league comps for Georgetown point to games that make SJU a decent play at -9.5 and perhaps worth some partial-unit action at -10.

PASS for now, but circle back.

Over/Under

The Over has hit in 3 of the last 4 GU-SJU games. It’s 7-0 in the Hoyas’ last 7 road games vs. foes with a winning home record (SJU is 9-3) and is 5-1 in the Red Storm’s last 6 games against teams playing at a .400 clip or worse.

Both teams rank in the top third in tempo per KenPom. SJU’s 14.8 seconds per possession is the quickest figure in NCAA-I hoops. Both teams get — and yield — a few too many good looks inside, and that makes up for an overall lack of 3-point shooting. Add in a decent amount of 2nd-chance opportunities, and free throws likely get to above-established levels.

TAKE THE OVER 157.5 (-115).

Georgetown at St. John’s odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Sunday’s Georgetown Hoyas at St. John’s Red Storm aodds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Georgetown Hoyas (6-7, 0-2 in Big East) meet the St. John’s Red Storm (9-5, 1-2) Sunday at Madison Square Garden for a Big East battle. The tip-off is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Georgetown vs. St. John’s odds and lines and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

Georgetown enters on a three-game losing skid (0-3 ATS), which includes two straight double-digit blowout home losses in conference play to the Marquette Golden Eagles Jan. 7, and the Butler Bulldogs Thursday.

The Hoyas are 5-8 ATS and 7-6 O/U with the 208th-toughest schedule, according to USA TODAY’s Jeff Sagarin.

St. John’s has lost three of four games (1-3 ATS) including back-to-back road games in the Big East to the No. 20 Providence Friars Jan. 8, and the Connecticut Huskies in overtime Wednesday.

The Johnnies are 5-9 ATS and 9-5 O/U with the 218th-toughest schedule (Sagarin). St. John’s junior wing Julian Champagnie is the conference’s leading scorer (21.2 points per game) and has the third-best PER (25.8).

Georgetown is 3-2 overall and 3-2 ATS versus St. John’s since the Red Storm hired head coach Mike Anderson heading into 2019-20.

Georgetown at St. John’s odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

St. John’s 90, Georgetown 74

Money line

PASS even though I like the Red Storm to bounce back from a heartbreaking overtime loss at UConn earlier this week and handle business at the Garden versus the Hoyas.

However, St. John’s (-700) is way out of my price range for a money line favorite in conference play.

Plus if Champagnie or Johnnies sophomore PG Posh Alexander have off-games then Georgetown (+470) could certainly steal one Sunday.

Against the spread

BET ST. JOHN’S -11.5 (-107) because the Johnnies are getting steamed by sharp money despite it being a terrible spot for them.

In fact, several ATS trends point to St. John’s being a bad bet, and even the spread is jarring.

That said, the Johnnies have been bet from a 10-point opening favorite up to the current price, and I think that one-sided action has to do with Georgetown’s injury report.

Hoyas guards sophomore Dante Harris and senior Donald Carey both missed Georgetown’s previous game (a 14-point loss at home to Butler) and could be sidelined for this one as well. That would be a lot of missing production for the Hoyas.

Harris is Georgetown’s second-leading scorer (13.0 PPG) and averages a team-high 5.0 assists per game. Carey is Georgetown’s fourth-leading scorer (12.8 PPG) and is third in rebounds per game and second in assists per game.

Lastly, St. John’s plays a style conducive to covering big spreads. The Johnnies apply a lot of pressure to opposing ball handlers and play at the fastest pace in the Big East.

BET ST. JOHN’S -11.5 (-107).

Over/Under

“LEAN” OVER 161.5 (-110) for a half-unit only because my prediction is only 2.5 points off of the projected total since Georgetown could be missing two starting guards.

But, Georgetown ranks second in pace in the Big East, and this is a Pros versus Joe’s game in the betting market for the total.

According to Pregame.com, nearly 80% of the money is on the Over, but roughly 70% of the bets placed are on the Under. Typically, in sports betting, it’s profitable to follow the money when it’s counter to the public.

Furthermore, the Hoyas have gone Over the total in three of its past four games, the Johnnies have gone Over in three straight and both Georgetown-St. John’s meetings last season soared Over the total by at least 20 points.

“LEAN” OVER 161.5 (-110).
