The Kansas City Royals have welcomed Kansas City Chiefs starting QB Patrick Mahomes to their ownership group.

Royals legend and current VP of Baseball Operations, George Brett, is perhaps the only other figure in Kansas City sports history who has come close to having the type of notoriety and impact that Mahomes currently has on the city. Recently, Brett spoke to TMZ Sports to react to the news of Mahomes joining the Royals’ ownership group.

“I read in the paper that he got $500 million dollars, so he had a couple of dollar bills laying around and wanted to invest in something that he really liked I guess,” Brett said, jokingly. “He grew up playing baseball, his dad was a baseball player. He got drafted to play baseball, I believe by the Detroit Tigers and probably still has a soft spot in his heart.”

Brett likens Mahomes’ connection to Kansas City to his own back in his playing days. He’s excited to see that he’s already settled in, buying a home in town.

“I’m sure that everybody in Kansas City is really excited because, like me, they’ve adopted Patrick Mahomes,” Brett said. “I came here as a 20-year-old, I didn’t know anybody in this city, and I’ve lived here now for 47 years. Patrick bought a home here and I think he’s already upgraded as of last week supposedly. He got rid of the little two or three-bedroom house he has, now he has about a six-bedroom house… The town is excited to have him obviously and I think the town is really excited to have him as a part of the ownership group.”

One thing that most impresses Brett about Mahomes is his work ethic. He explained that with a funny story about the two of them which occurred ahead Chiefs training camp in 2019.

“Last year we were playing golf. It was the day before he was going to camp,” Brett said. “I said, ‘Well, Patrick, we’ve got to get together and play on Tuesdays, on your off-day.’ He says, ‘No, George, when the season starts I will not pick up my clubs until the season is over.’ Well, after our round we had a couple of beers and I said, ‘Well, let’s get together on Monday or Tuesday night and have a couple of beers.’ He said, ‘No, George, I will not have a drink until the season is over.’ I don’t know if you saw him during the celebration parade, he made up for it in that one day. But he’s a really dedicated athlete. He’s a great guy. He’s almost too good to be true. He’s a wonderful, wonderful human being. He says all the right things for a young guy in his position and I couldn’t be happier for him.”

Brett already believes that Mahomes has surpassed him as the “biggest thing” in Kansas City sports history.

“By far, by far,” Brett said. “Tom Watson and I used to joke around a lot. But Patrick Mahomes, he’s the real deal. For what he’s done for the Chiefs and the way he’s conducted himself as a young man in town. His first year, he didn’t start a game until the last game of the year. He just sat and practiced behind Alex Smith. I think Smith taught him a lot. He started the last game, I think he had a great comeback against the Broncos in Denver. We all saw what he did in his [first year starting] and we all said, ‘Well, he can’t do better than that.’ And he did. He’s been an MVP, a Super Bowl champion and an MVP in a Super Bowl. You can’t go anywhere or watch any program in town without seeing a Patrick Mahomes commercial.”

Welcoming him to the organization, Brett provided these parting words for Mahomes, Chiefs Kingdom, and Royals fans.

“It’s a class organization,” Brett said. “They do things a little bit differently here, your family is No. 1 and baseball is No. 2. I think he’s going to fit right in with the ownership group and the Royals culture that they have within the ball club.”
