Former Vol Geoff Courtney completes first spring as Farragut’s football head coach

Farragut High School concluded spring football practices on Tuesday under first-year head coach and former Vol Geoff Courtney. The Admirals’ Blue-Grey Game was held at Bill Clabo Field in Farragut, Tennessee.

Courtney is Farragut’s 14th head coach in program history.

He replaced his father, Eddie Courtney, who retired in March after 28 years as Farragut’s head coach. Eddie Courtney won 204 games and one state championship in 2016 during his head coaching career.

Geoff Courtney played at Farragut from 2002-05 and earned All-Region 2-5A honors.

He played wide receiver and holder for the Vols from 2007-09 after redshirting in 2006.

Former Vol Geoff Courtney was named head football coach at Farragut High School in Farragut, Tennessee on Friday.

Courtney is Farragut’s 14th head coach in program history.

He replaces his father, Eddie Courtney, who retired in March after 28 years as the Admirals’ head coach. Eddie Courtney won 204 games during his head coaching career.

Geoff Courtney played at Farragut from 2002-05 and earned All-Region 2-5A honors.

After high school, he played for the Vols from 2007-09 after redshirting in 2006. He was a wide receiver and holder for Tennessee, and was a member of the SEC All-Academic Team in 2007.

After his career at Tennessee, Geoff Courtney returned to Farragut to join his father’s coaching staff. He was as an assistant coach for the Admirals from 2010-23, serving as a defensive backs coach before being promoted to offensive coordinator.

Geoff Courtney served as Farragut’s interim head coach when his father underwent cancer treatment in 2020.

FARRAGUT — A former University of Tennessee football player will make his head coaching debut Friday night.

Geoff Courtney, a walk-on for the Volunteers between 2006-09, will coach the Farragut Admirals Friday night in their Region 1-6A contest against Morristown West at Bill Clabo Field.

Courtney, a former Farragut star wide receiver, defensive back and kick returner, serves as the Admirals’ offensive coordinator.

He will fill in for his father, Eddie, who had cancer surgery on Wednesday.

The elder Courtney is a cancer survivor. The longtime Farragut head coach beat Hodgkin’s disease in 2005.

Eddie Courtney is a beloved figure in East Tennessee, and he is regarded as one of Tennessee’s biggest ambassadors of high school football.

He guided the Admirals to the Class 5A state championship in 2016.

Geoff Courtney was on his father’s coaching staff that season and has been an assistant coach at Farragut for more than a decade.

Eddie Courtney is hoping to return to coaching sometime this season. The Admirals are 2-1 in 2020, winning a pair of home games against Bradley Central and Oak Ridge.

Farragut suffered its lone loss on the road against West High School in Knoxville.
