Genshin Impact generated $3.7 billion in its first two years

HoYoverse’s anime RPG defied player spend trends in the mobile sector and saw increased revenue in the first half of 2022.

Genshin Impact, the hit anime RPG from Shanghai developer HoYoverse, generated $3.7 billion in revenue since it first launched on Sept. 28, 2020, a new report from analyst firm Sensor Tower shows, and that number is only from the game’s mobile version. Sensor Tower’s report doesn’t include revenue from Genshin Impact’s PC and console versions.

Sensor Tower mobile insights strategist Craig Chapple said Genshin Impact is China’s number one market for player spending and accounts for 33 percent of mobile revenue there, while worldwide, the gacha game is the third highest revenue generating title, behind only PUBG Mobile ($4.9 billion) and Honor of Kings ($5.5 billion).

While the rest of the mobile games industry witnessed declines in spending during 2022’s first two quarters, Genshin Impact saw player spending increase by 16 percent in the first quarter and 28 percent in the second quarter.

Chapple attributes this success to HoYoverse developing Genshin Impact with a global audience in mind.

“[HoYoverse] has taken the learnings from its past games such as Honkai Impact 3rd, which itself has now surpassed $1 billion in global player spending, and applied them to huge success,” Chapple said in the report. “Combining an effective gacha monetization system with an almost industrial scale live operations strategy supplying regular content updates and popular new characters, miHoYo has kept Genshin Impact relevant and bucking the recent trends of the rest of the industry.”

That trend seems unlikely to change as well. HoYoverse recently released Genshin Impact version 3.1, adding a new desert region and several new characters for players to spend on, with two more highly anticipated characters confirmed for the 3.2 update as well.

Genshin Impact won’t get shields as a weapon type

Candace is still a polearm user at heart.

Genshin Impact’s 3.1 update introduces Candace to the game, a unique playable character who uses both her polearm and a shield in combat. She is the first character to wield two different weapons at the same time.

Among fans, this has caused cautious optimism and speculation about a possible expansion of the available weapon types. Currently, characters can wield a sword, a claymore, a polearm, a bow, or a catalyst. Many users saw Candace’s usage of a shield as a test run by the developers for an upcoming expansion of the available weapon arsenal.

Candace is not a prototype for shield users

Speaking to GLHF, Genshin Impact’s developers seek to curb fan enthusiasm: “At the moment, Candace will only have her shield out when casting some of her skills.” She is still a polearm user at heart.

Continuing on, they elaborate that “her shield does not belong to a common weapon type that can be upgraded.” For now, it seems, an expansion of the available pool of weapons is not in the cards. That might be true for the long-term as well, as the team declares: “In the future, we will release more playable characters with different backgrounds, behaviors, and attack patterns.” That doesn’t explicitly deny potential new weapon types being introduced, but is not exactly inducing much confidence in the other direction either. Time will have to tell.

Nevertheless, the introduction of Candace shows that variety is possible even in the current system with five weapon types. Shikanoin Heizou from update 2.8 is also a shining example: although he uses a catalyst, he is the first melee fighter of this weapon class and has a unique fighting style reminiscent of martial arts monks. With this amount of creativity, fans won’t get bored even without new weapons being introduced.

During our interview, Genshin Impact’s developers also told us their feelings about the steady stream of leaks surrounding the game.

Genshin Impact leaks are “a heavy blow” to developers

The team commented on the constant flood of leaks revealing future content for the game.

Shortly before the release of update 3.1 for Genshin Impact, the developers of the action role-playing game spoke to GLHF. In addition to exciting discussions about the design of Sumeru and the Dendro element, both of which were introduced with version 3.0, the team commented on the constant flood of leaks revealing future content for the game – one of the downsides of its massive popularity.

Genshin Impact leaks are “a lot of trouble”

“We sincerely appreciate and understand everyone’s attention and eagerness to learn more about the content of new versions”, the developers explain to GLHF. These feelings have limits, however, as “the information leaks that have been happening for a while have indeed caused a lot of trouble for our team and have influenced the in-game experience of players who would like to see new content for themselves.”

For the team, the consistent leaks don’t come without an emotional cost – something, that has oftentimes not been considered in the public eye, but which has come to the forefront with the recent GTA 6 leaks: “All forms of information leakage and even hacks have been depleting the development team’s energy, and have also dealt a heavy blow to our developers’ creative enthusiasm.”

Before the release of game version 3.0, a lot of information about the new region and main story content ended up on the web – mainly such leaks seem to come from beta tests of unreleased updates. Another source is the game data itself, which data miners comb through in detail to gain knowledge.

Developer wants to hold leakers accountable

The company’s Chinese and international legal departments are continuously collecting evidence. The goal is to “pursue the legal responsibility of these individuals and organizations on a long-term basis, regardless of the cost.” The company is also seeking to cooperate with social media platforms to prevent leaks from spreading, “despite it being a time and energy-consuming process.”

The developers appeal to the fan community for help: “We hope that players who like Genshin Impact can also respect and support the work of the development team, and stand against all forms of leaks and illegal information theft.”
