Netflix’s Gears of War movie brings on Dune and Doctor Strange writer

Jon Spaihts believes the series ranks high among “all-time great action games.”

Netflix has found a writer for its upcoming Gears of War movie – Jon Spaihts, best known for writing Doctor Strange (2016), Dune (2021), and the forthcoming Dune: Part 2.

Gears of War is one of the all-time great action games, with vivid characters, a beautifully designed world, and a combat system that drives home the lethality of war and the importance of standing by your squadmates,” Spaihts said via Variety. “It wants to be cinema, and I’m thrilled to have the chance to help that happen.”

Netflix announced the movie in November 2022, alongside a Gears of War animated series. The film will seemingly adapt the original game’s storyline from 2006 – which many still consider one of the best Xbox 360 games ever.

The Gears of War movie is a joint effort between Netflix and developer The Coalition, which took over the franchise from Epic Games several years ago.

“We’re thrilled to partner with Jon and the Netflix team to bring Gears of War to life,” reads a statement from The Coalition. “Jon is a master storyteller with a talent for creating epic, science-fiction universes, and he truly loves Gears of War. We couldn’t ask for a better partner to honor our franchise and deliver an authentic story to our fans.”

There’s yet to be a premiere date for the film, but let’s hope it turns out better than most video game adaptations – which are often quite bad

Netflix announces live-action Gears of War film and animated series

Developer The Coalition will be assisting studios with both Gears of War projects.

Gears of War is coming back in a big way, as Netflix announced two new small-screen projects based on the franchise.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix will produce a live-action Gears of War movie and an “adult” animated series. Long-time series developer The Coalition will assist with these projects, likely to ensure both remain faithful to the source material. Casting and production details are still a massive question mark right now.

Gears of War was released 16 years ago today and to mark the occasion, Netflix has partnered with The Coalition to adapt the video game saga into a live-action feature film, followed by an adult animated series — with the potential for more stories to follow,” Netflix said on Twitter.

Hollywood studios have been trying to get a Gear of War major motion picture off the ground for years. New Line Cinema and Universal tried to adapt the series way back in 2007, but that project never took off in any meaningful way. At least, nothing materialized into a complete film.

Netflix’s track record with solid video game adaptations is pretty spotty. Sure, the Emmy-award-winning Arcane is excellent, but then there’s stuff like the poorly-received Resident Evil show

Gears of War might be getting a Master Chief Collection-like bundle

Marcus Fenix, get ready for your closeup.

Nothing quite defines the Xbox 360 era like Gears of War. Chainsaw bayonets, underground monsters, hokey dialogue, and fantastic co-op campaigns are the first thing that comes to my mind while looking back on the series. We might get to relive it all soon too.

Journalist Nick Baker recently stated during the Xbox Era podcast that some sort of Gears of War collection could be in development (thanks, VGC).

“A while back, I said there is another Microsoft franchise that’s getting the Master Chief Collection-type treatment. I am of the belief that that is coming this year,” Baker said. “Everyone has guessed it, if you go from November 2021 to November 2022 and you look at Microsoft’s big game output, it could wind up being Halo, Gears, Forza.”

Since Halo Infinite and Forza Horizon 5 came out last fall, that would leave Gears of War as the likeliest candidate Baker could be hinting at. Considering how popular Halo: The Master Chief Collection is, Gears of War getting the same treatment seems like a slam dunk.

As with any rumor, don’t take this as confirmation that Gears of War will get a collection. However, it’s looking likely. There’s not been an entry in the series since Gears 5 in 2019, so it’s high time something comes out under that banner.
