REPORT: 2023 Gavitt Games matchups set

The expected matchups for the 2023 Gavitt Games have been reported.

According to a report from Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports and College Hoops Today, the 2023 Gavitt Games matchups have been set.

Last year, the Big 10 dominated the Gavitt Games winning six of eight meetings. The Big 10 has won each of the last three Gavitt Games dating back to 2019, winning a total of 17 of 24 matchups.

The Gavitt Tipoff Games are an eight-game series between the Big Ten and Big East conferences similar to the former Big Ten/ACC challenge and is named after former Big East commissioner Dave Gavitt. They were first held for the 2015 season which the two conferences split each of the first three Gavitt Games.

Since 2018, however, it has been heavily dominated by the Big Ten. The Big Ten has won 5-3, 5-3, 6-2, and 6-2 in each of the last four. The 2020 Gavitt Games were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the 2022 Gavitt Games, DePaul and St. John’s were the only Big East team to pick up victories while Penn State, Northwestern, Purdue, Iowa, Indiana, and Michigan State all walked away with victories.

DePaul, St. John’s, and Indiana have had the most success in the Gavitt Games winning four games a piece. Additionally, UConn has yet to appear in the games since rejoining the Big East in 2020. They are not scheduled to appear in this year’s matchups.

No dates have yet to be scheduled for this year’s Gavitt Games and there is no expected announcement date at this time either according to Rothstein. Traditionally, the games are held in the second or third week of November.

Big Ten can clinch Gavitt Tipoff Games victory over Big East on Friday

Indiana and Michigan State can clinch victory for the Big Ten over the Big East on Friday

The week-long series of games played between schools from the Big Ten and the Big East has seen the Big Ten flex some key non-conference muscle against their counterpart. And on Friday, the Big Ten has a chance to clinch an outright victory in this year’s Gavitt Tipoff Games with two chances to do so.

A win by either Indiana or Michigan State on Friday will give the Big Ten the crown for this year’s Gavitt Tipoff Games. Indiana visits Xavier in Cincinnati, Ohio in the first game on Friday evening. Michigan State will host Villanova in the final game of the week-long schedule. With a record of 4-2 this week in the head-to-head matchups, the Big Ten needs just one win to claim victory. It could very well come down to the Spartans, who have had a pretty big week already with a double-overtime victory over Kentucky in the Champions Classic.

The Big Ten is 2-1-3 against the Big East in the annual series of games, which started in 2015. The Big Ten and Big East tied the head-to-head matchups each of the first three years of the scheduling agreement from 2015 through 2017. The Big Ten claimed victory in 2018 and 2019 with back-to-back 5-3 records. The series was called off in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the Big East had a decisive 6-2 victory in the Gavitt Tipoff Games in 2021.

Penn State did its part to get the Big Ten in the win column on the first day of the series earlier in the week. Penn State was led by a triple-double from [autotag]Jalen Pickett[/autotag] in a big home win against Butler on Monday night. After Minnesota dropped its Monday night game to DePaul, Penn State’s win was the first for the Big Ten this week.

Northwestern and Iowa each won games on the road against Georgetown and Seton Hall, respectively, and Purdue won a good one at home against Marquette. Nebraska couldn’t keep pace with St. John’s after halftime on the road on Thursday night.

This year’s Gavitt Tipoff Games results are as follows:

  • DePaul 69, Minnesota 53 (Big East leads 1-0)
  • Penn State 68, Butler 62 (Series tied 1-1)
  • Northwestern 75, Georgetown 63 (Big Ten leads 2-1)
  • Purdue 75, Marquette 70 (Big Ten leads 3-1)
  • Iowa 83, Seton Hall 67 (Big Ten leads 4-1)
  • St. John’s 70, Nebraska 50 (Big Ten leads 4-2)

Penn State will continue its run in the Charleston Classic on Friday afternoon with a matchup with Virginia Tech. A win against the Hokies will send the Nittany Lions to the Charleston Classic championship game on Sunday against either Colorado State or Charleston.

Jalen Pickett triple-double leads Penn State to win over Butler

Jalen Pickett had just the second triple-double in Penn State history in a win over Butler Monday night.

After somewhat cruising past the first two opponents of the season, Penn State men’s basketball faced a stiffer challenge Monday night in the Gavitt Tipoff Games from the Butler Bulldogs. But a historic night from [autotag]Jalen Pickett[/autotag] helped the Nittany Lions overcome some adversity on the court and improve to 3-0 at the Bryce Jordan Center with a 68-62 victory.

Pickett recorded a triple-double with 15 points, 10 rebounds, and 11 assists. It is just the second triple-double in Penn State’s program history. The last Nittany Lion to record a triple-double was Calvin Booth in an NIT game against Dayton on March 16, 1998.

“He starts to do things as he starts to play in the post or off picks,” Penn State head coach Micah Shrewsberry said of Pickett’s play in his postgame press conference. “He’s adjusting as the game goes. There may be things he misses early on in the game, but he makes the switch pretty quickly after learning about it. He’s also really good at seeing the defense and trying to take advantage of the opportunity.”

Butler got a big effort from center Manny Bates, who had a game-high 16 points and 10 rebounds. Four different Butler players scored in double figures, but the same was true for Penn State as well. In addition to Pickett’s big night, [autotag]Seth Lundy[/autotag], [autotag]Andrew Funk[/autotag], and [autotag]Camren Wynter[/autotag] each scored in double figures in the win. Funk drained three three-pointers as Penn State hit on 10 of their 24 three-point shots for another game with at least 10 three-pointers made.

Penn State led by as many as 16 points after regaining control of the game in the second half, but Butler worked its way out of an 11-point hole in the first half to lead by two late in the first half. Penn State did manage to get to halftime with a lead though.

Gavitt Tipoff Games Update

Penn State’s win evened the Gavitt Tipoff Games between the Big Ten and the Big East. Monday’s doubleheader to kick off the week-long series of games between the two conferences actually began a little earlier in the night with DePaul handing Minnesota a loss in Minneapolis, 69-53. The series is now even at one win each going into Tuesday night.

Tuesday night features the next two games in the Gavitt Tipoff Games with Northwestern visiting Georgetown and Purdue hosting Marquette. Both games will air on FS1 with Georgetown and Northwestern first to tip at 6:30 p.m. ET.

Other Big Ten teams in action on Tuesday not participating in the event include Wisconsin (vs. Green Bay), Maryland (vs. Binghamton) and Michigan State (vs. Kentucky in the Champions Classic in Indianapolis).

Up Next

Penn State’s next game will take them away from the Bryce Jordan Center as they head south to participate in the Charleston Classic, beginning Thursday and running through Sunday. Penn State will face Furman in their first game in the tournament on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. ET.

Penn State vs. Butler men’s basketball: TV and stream info for Gavitt Tipoff Games matchup

How to watch Penn State take on Butler Monday night in the Gavitt Tipoff Games.

Opening night in the 2022 Gavitt Tipoff Games features a doubleheader between schools from the Big Ten and Big East, and Penn State is set to host the second game of Monday’s doubleheader. Penn State will host Butler, a program that once had Nittany Lions head coach Micah Shrewsberry as an assistant coach. It will be the first time in decades that Penn State and Butler will tip off against one another, with the last meeting coming before Penn State joined the Big Ten.

Yeah, it’s been a while.

Penn State is off to a nice 2-0 start at home this season following decisive victories against Winthrop and Loyola to start the year with plenty of three-pointers and defense leading the way. Penn State will need to keep that going as Butler comes in as the most well-rounded opponent so far this early in the season.

Here is how to catch Monday night’s Gavitt Tipoff Games matchup between the Nittany Lions and the Bulldogs.

2022 Gavitt Tipoff Games Schedule: Big Ten vs. Big East

The Big Ten and Big East go head-to-head in this week’s Gavitt Tipoff Games. Here’s the full schedule.

Teams from the Big Ten and Big East will be clashing all week as this year’s Gavitt Tipoff Games. The annual eight-game series named in honor of former Big East commissioner Dave Gavitt, has been played since the 2015 season and the Big Ten has taken the series twice.

The 2022 season marks the final year in the eight-year scheduling agreement between the Big Ten and Big East, although the possibility of extending the series is always an option. With conference alignment changes incoming though, the future scheduling arrangements may have a different look moving forward.

Here is the full schedule for this year’s game with everything getting started with a double-header on Big Ten courts on Monday night.

Report: Gavitt Games ‘unlikely to take place’ this year

The plan is to move forward with the Gavitt Games returning for the 2021-22 season.

[jwplayer vDCx2jju]

Jon Rothstein continues to help us piece together the 2020-21 Michigan State basketball schedule, and he reported on Wednesday what we had originally thought to be the case last week — no Gavitt Games this year.

Last week, we tried reading the tea leaves of numerous reports and it seemed apparent Michigan State would not participate in this year’s Gavitt Tipoff Games. There simply appeared to be no room in the Spartans’ schedule based on previous reports and there were thoughts that only geographically close matchups (i.e. Northwestern-DePaul or Nebraska-Creighton) would take place in the event so it should come as no shock that Rothstein is reporting the event won’t occur this year.

Rothstein added that the plan is to move forward with the Gavitt Games returning next year — which Michigan State should certainly be part of based on contract obligations.

With the Gavitt Games officially off the table, Michigan State still has two spots to fill on their non-conference portion of the 2020-21 schedule. We can expect those two slots to be filled by traditional “buy games” with two mid-major opponents visiting the Breslin Center.

Here is how the non-conference schedule is appearing to shape up based on reports from college basketball insiders:

  • Nov. 25 – 27: Orlando Invitational (three games; tournament field includes Gonzaga, Auburn, Xavier, Belmont, St. Louis, Boise State and eighth TBD team)
  • Dec. 1: Champions Classic vs. Duke
  • Dec. 8 or 9: ACC-Big Ten Challenge vs. TBD team
  • December: Two more non-conference games

Multiple reports indicate MSU unlikely to play in Gavitt Games

A pair of reports from college basketball insiders indicates the Spartans won’t take place in this year’s Gavitt Tipoff Games

[jwplayer W4ONB6vg]

The reports keeping coming and the puzzle pieces keep sliding into place on Michigan State basketball’s 2020-21 schedule.

Yesterday, I published an article on the latest status of the Spartans’ 2020-21 college basketball schedule with a few unknowns still lingering. One of those question marks was the Gavitt Tipoff Games — which traditionally pits the Big Ten and Big East, similar to the ACC-Big Ten Challenge — but a pair of reports from college basketball insiders indicates the Spartans won’t take place in this year’s event.

Andy Katz of NCAA.com reported the Big East is “committed” to playing their agreed-upon series of games with the Big 12, appearing to put the Gavitt Games on the back burner for the league. Katz added that a handful of Big Ten-Big East games could be played if the teams are located close to each other, such as Northwester-DePaul or Nebraska-Creighton.

Earlier in the day, Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports tweeted that the Big East has a target window of Dec. 12 – 23 to play potentially four conference games, which basically takes up the entire back half of December from playing non-conference games.

So with Michigan State having no nearby Big East opponents, and their schedule basically booked up through Dec. 9 and the Big Ten schedule most likely starting no later than early January, it seems almost impossible to squeeze in the Gavitt Games this year.

Keep in mind, that this is all speculation at this point since neither Michigan State nor the Gavitt Games have announced anything but it does make sense for the Spartans to skip the event this year. Their non-conference schedule was stripped down from normally 11 games to only seven because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and nearly all of those seven games are already filled up with high-level competition.

Here is the current schedule breakdown based on reports from the past few weeks:

  • Nov. 25 – 27: Orlando Invitational (three games; tournament field includes Gonzaga, Auburn, Xavier, Belmont, St. Louis, Boise State and eighth TBD team)
  • Dec. 1: Champions Classic vs. Duke
  • Dec. 8 or 9: ACC-Big Ten Challenge vs. TBD team
  • December – March: 20-game Big Ten conference schedule

This leaves the Spartans with two non-conference games left to add to the schedule. If teams are thinking more locally-based when finding opponents, don’t be surprised if the Spartans add the Oakland Grizzlies and one of the in-state Mid American Conference foes to round out the schedule.

Michigan State to play in 2020 Gavitt Tipoff Games

The Spartans will make their second consecutive appearance in the annual competition after missing the first four affairs.

Michigan State will make a second consecutive appearance in the Gavitt Tipoff Games.

After being the only team among the Big Ten and Big East to not participate in the first four iterations of the games, the Spartans made their Gavitt debut in 2019 when they beat Seton Hall on the road in mid-November. Now, they’ll be back in in 2020 according to national college basketball writer Adam Zagoria.

It is likely that MSU will host their Gavitt game this season.

The Gavitt Games are an annual competition between eight Big Ten and eight Big East teams at the beginning of the college basketball season. They started in 2015 and are named after Dave Gavitt, the first commissioner of the Big East.

The Big Ten holds a 2-0 lead in the event, winning 5-3 in both 2018 and 2019. The two conferences tied 4-4 in the first three years. Michigan State, Maryland, and Ohio State are the only three teams yet to lose in the Gavitt Games.
