Injury Report: Warriors’ Gary Payton II exits game vs. Magic with hamstring injury

The Warriors guard exited Tuesday’s game against the Magic with a hamstring injury.

In search of their first win of the 2024 calendar year, the Golden State Warriors will have to close out the Orlando Magic without a key piece in the rotation.

In the third quarter, Gary Payton II appeared to stumble on the court while playing defense on Magic guard Cole Anthony. Payton II quickly exited the game and left to the locker room.

Warriors provide encouraging update on Gary Payton II

The Golden State Warriors have provided an encouraging update on Gary Payton II.

The Golden State Warriors have provided an update on Gary Payton II‘s recovery from his calf injury. The veteran wing has been absent from the rotation for the past nine games and has struggled for health throughout the season’s first quarter.

According to a press release from Golden State, Payton II has now been cleared to begin practicing with the Warriors. Golden State will monitor how Payton II’s body responded to the increase in workload and will re-evaluate his progress in a week’s time before likely making a decision on a potential return to the rotation.

When Payton II does eventually return for the Warriors, the lineups will look different to what he’s used to. Jonathan Kuminga and Brandin Podziemski have earned themselves a starting spot, and Trayce Jackson-Davis is quickly carving out an important role for himself.

Payton II will be an important addition back into Golden State’s bench rotation. He will bring energy, defensive upside, and some secondary scoring to the rotation.

The Warriors have been playing with a renewed sense of energy and urgency over the past four games; Payton II will help them sustain that and potentially even take it to the next level.

Watch: Gary Payton II hits the comeback trail

Gary Payton II can be seen working out with the Golden State Warriors coaching staff in a video that surfaced on social media.

Gary Payton II has been out of the Golden State Warriors rotation due to a calf injury. The veteran wing has struggled with his fitness this season. When healthy, however, he has been an impact player off the bench. As such, Warriors fans have eagerly awaited his return from his latest setback.

On Sunday, a video surfaced of Payton working out on an exercise bike in what appears to be another step forward in his recovery. Payton is likely working on his conditioning and is not cleared to resume basketball activities.

Nevertheless, the video is an encouraging sign of the veteran’s recovery. Payton likely has more hurdles to clear before he’s back in the rotation, and an immediate return is unlikely.

Watch: Gary Payton II celebrates Manchester City’s treble

Basketball and soccer are two of the most popular sports on the planet. A lot of NBA players are soccer fans, and vice versa. We often see players posing for pictures at stadiums worldwide during the offseason. However, in the Golden State Warriors‘ latest YouTube video, Gary Payton II stands next to a Manchester City trophy as the team celebrates its treble.

Pep Guardiola’s side won the English Premier League, Champions League and the FA Cup, making them the first team since fierce rivals Manchester United to achieve the rare incredible feat. Payton looks ecstatic to stand beside the trophy and one of the team’s mascots.

Brandin Podziemski sends message to Gary Payton II after injury

The Golden State Warriors rookie believes the team “will hold it down” while Gary Payton II recovers from his latest injury setback.

Brandin Podziemski referred to Gary Payton II as “twin” in a recent message of support on X (formerly known as Twitter.)

The Golden State Warriors rookie responded to the veteran’s post, claiming the Warriors would “shake back” regarding their recent slump and his current injury struggles.

Payton had only recently returned to the rotation. He had missed three games and returned to the lineup on Nov. 24 when the Warriors played the San Antonio Spurs. The veteran’s latest injury doesn’t have a timetable regarding a potential return.

It would appear Podziemski is growing closer with the veteran talent around him. Sending messages of support on social media isn’t often something you see between teammates. Yet, Podziemski has made a big impact since joining the team this summer and appears to be enjoying himself and relishing the battle the Warriors are currently facing.

With Payton out of the rotation, Podziemski could see additional minutes. As such, he will have an opportunity to make an impact when the Warriors face the LA Clippers on Thursday (Nov. 30.)

Gary Payton II reveals financial motivations of in-season tournament

Gary Payton II believes the $500K per player prize money will fuel the Golden State Warriors in their upcoming game against the Kings.

The Golden State Warriors still have a chance of advancing into the knockout stage of the in-season tournament. Their win over the San Antonio Spurs on Friday (Nov. 24) kept the team’s hopes alive. However, Golden State will need to defeat the Sacramento Kings on Tuesday (Nov. 28) and hope other results go their way.

When speaking to the media following Golden State’s win over the Spurs, Gary Payton II noted players use the $500K prize money as additional motivation for tournament games. He noted how the different courts in use signify when games are “money time.”

“It’s technically money time,” Payton said. “So, we can’t afford to give up any of these. Tonight was pretty big. Everybody had their antennas up, was active, and causing havoc. We knew our backs were against the wall, so we went out and tried to compete for the money. … We just know that when the court is different, it’s money time. Especially our young guys, it will help out our young guys and our two-ways.”

The Warriors and Kings are developing somewhat of a rivalry between them. Whenever the two teams have faced off in recent games, it has always led to an electric performance from both sides, with highlight-level game endings.

With so much riding on the final game of the Warriors’ in-season tournament group, we could see a playoff-intensity game between Sacramento and Golden State. That’s precisely what the NBA office had in mind when it  implemented the changes.

Gary Payton II discusses blocking Victor Wembanyama

Gary Payton II spoke about being the fifth player to record a block on Victor Wembanyama this season.

The Golden State Warriors returned to the win column with a 118-112 victory over the San Antonio Spurs on Friday (Nov. 24.) One of the highlights from the game was a Gary Payton II block on 7-foot-4 Victor Wembanyama. Payton is the fifth player to record a block on the impressive rookie and is the smallest of the five.

When speaking to the media after the game, Payton discussed what led to his block and how he tried to provide a defensive spark for his team to help build momentum during the game.

“I was just trying to get back and help protect the rim,” Payton said. “I think it was 30 that made him re-adjust and Euro, I knew he wasn’t passing the ball, so tried to meet him at the top before he got it off. … It’s just energy and effort, you know? Try to get and make plays. Get us out, get a spark, and get going. I think after that, we kind of turned up the defensive intensity. After that, we turned up the defensive intensity. It got us getting stops.”

Payton had missed the Warriors’ last three games due to injury. His return to the rotation helped boost Golden State’s defense and ensured the bench unit played with energy and purpose.

The win leaves the Warriors third in “West Group C” of the in-season tournament. However, the Sacramento Kings top the group with three straight wins and are likely to proceed to the next round.
