MSU listed in top 10 of CBS Sports’ preseason 2023-24 college basketball rankings

Gary Parrish of CBS Sports is high on the Spartans for next year, but not as much as some other media outlets

Gary Parrish of CBS Sports is high on the Spartans for next year, but not as much as some other media outlets.

Parrish released an updated batch of preseason rankings for the 2023-24 season earlier this month, and to no surprise, Michigan State was near the top. However, he has Michigan State at No. 5 — which comes in three spots behind Purdue at No. 2. Parrish also has Kansas (No.1), Duke (No. 3) and Florida Atlantic (No. 4) ahead of the Spartans in his rankings.

Michigan State and Purdue were two of only three Big Ten teams to make Parrish’s rankings, with Illinois being the third team at No. 23.

The Spartans have been a regular highly ranked team in the preseason rankings I’ve seen in the past month. Most I’ve come across have Michigan State sitting at No. 3 behind only Kansas and Duke so for Parrish to have the Spartans a few spots lower is somewhat surprising.

Below is a breakdown of the complete top 25 rankings from Parrish:

Michigan State basketball listed in top 20 of CBS Sports’ 2022-23 preseason rankings

Michigan State basketball will contend for the Big Ten title next season in the eyes of CBS Sports’ Gary Parrish

Michigan State basketball will contend for the Big Ten title next season in the eyes of CBS Sports’ Gary Parrish.

Parrish was one of many to release a batch of way-too-early preseason rankings for next season on Tuesday, and he has the Spartans as one of the top teams in the Big Ten next year. Parrish puts Michigan State at No. 18 in his rankings, and wrote the following about the Spartans:

The Spartans’ ranking is based on Michigan State returning seven of the top nine scorers from a team that advanced to the Round of 32 of the NCAA Tournament… If (Max) Christie is back, the hope would be that he takes a sophomore-year leap similar to the one Purdue’s Jaden Ivey and Wisconsin’s Johnny Davis made this season.

Michigan State comes in as the second-highest ranked team from the Big Ten in Parrish’s rankings behind only rival Michigan at No. 12. The other Big Ten teams ranked include Indiana (No. 19) and Purdue (No. 24).

The confirmed departures of Aaron Henry and Rocket Watts has resulted in Michigan State dropping a few spots in CBS Sports’ updated 2021-22 college basketball rankings.

Gary Parrish of CBS Sports has released an updated batch of his super early college basketball rankings for next season and the Spartans have dropped two spots to No. 21. Here’s what Parrish had to say about Michigan State:

Aaron Henry is following Joshua Langford and Rocket Watts out the door. But the arrival of five-star guard Max Christie and Northeastern transfer Tyson Walker should have Tom Izzo in his 24th straight NCAA Tournament.

It’s never too early to look ahead to next season, right?

This is the time of the year where sports media outlets release their super early rankings for the next college basketball season, and by no surprise Michigan State has become a regular participant in these rankings. That includes the “Never-Too-Early 2021-22 Top 25 And 1 preseason rankings” by Gary Parrish of CBS Sports.

Michigan State is listed at No. 18 in Parrish’s poll, which is slightly higher than where the Spartans’ sit in ESPN’s version of these super early rankings.

Here’s what Parrish had to say about the Spartans entering next season:

Aaron Henry is expected to follow Joshua Langford and Rocket Watts out the door. But the arrival of five-star guard Max Christie and Northeastern transfer Tyson Walker should have Tom Izzo in his 24th straight NCAA Tournament.

Michigan State was one of six Big Ten teams in Parrish’s rankings, including Ohio State (No. 6), Michigan (No. 8), Purdue (No. 9), Maryland (No. 13), and Illinois (No. 25).

See Penn State get owned on Twitter after questionable tweet

The Nittany Lions tried to be tricky with a Super Bowl tweet, then things when horribly wrong for Penn State.

With social media having such a large impact in the majority of peoples lives, many collegiate football teams are trying to be at the cutting edge of hyping their teams with posts. Well, it doesn’t always go well, and for Penn State, a recent tweet went bad.

It started with this innocent tweet and some very fine print, then went horribly wrong for the Nittany Lions.

CBS Sports’ Gary Parrish raves about Cassius Winston ahead of NBA Draft

Cassius Winston is getting high praise from a CBS Sports college basketball analyst ahead of the draft later this month.

With the 2020 NBA Draft just a few weeks away now, fans are getting excited to see the next wave of stars begin their NBA careers. Michigan State is projected to have two players drafted in Cassius Winston and Xavier Tillman Sr. Winston is getting high praise from a CBS Sports college basketball analyst ahead of the draft later this month.

“Cassius Winston I think could help an NBA team next season.”  Gary Parrish

Winston led the Spartans to a Big Ten regular season championship and 22-9 record last season. He averaged 18.6 PPG, 5.9 APG, and shot 43.2% from three last season in 30 games played. Winston is a projected late first or early second round pick in this year’s draft. Expect that position to change as the combine is happening throughout the month. Tillman is also a projected late first or early second round pick.

The draft is taking place on November 18th at ESPN facilities in Bristol, Connecticut over videoconferencing.

CBSSports’ recent preseason ranking sees the Badgers fall out of the top 10

CBSSports college basketball analyst Gary Parrish updated his preseason top 25 yesterday after the news that Illinois stars Kofi Cockburn…

CBSSports college basketball analyst Gary Parrish updated his preseason top 25 yesterday after the news that Illinois stars Kofi Cockburn and Ayo Dosunmu both decided to withdrawal from the draft and return to Illinois for the 2020 season.

The news vaulted the Fighting Illini up 20 spots to No. 7 in the nation while the Badgers fell two spots from No. 9 to No. 11.

Parrish’s poll is now the only at this point that doesn’t have Greg Gard’s team in the nations top 10, as in his rankings the team is now slotted behind Big Ten foes Michigan State, Iowa and Illinois.

Here’s what Parrish has to say about the 2020 Wisconsin Badgers:

Wisconsin got better after Kobe King quit the team in January – evidence being how the Badgers won eight straight games to close the regular season and shared the Big Ten crown with Maryland and Michigan State. Now the top five scorers from the final-game roster are expected back. The best of the bunch might be Micah Potter, who averaged 10.1 points and 6.2 rebounds while shooting 52.8% from the field. He’s among the reasons Wisconsin will be positioned to secure back-to-back league titles.

The college basketball season is now scheduled to tip off in exactly 100 days with the Badgers entering the season with the most national hype they’ve had since the 2014-15 team that had just come off a Final Four appearance.

They do have another roadblock in the Big Ten now, though, as Illinois’ recent news will make it even more difficult for Gard and company to repeat as Big Ten champions, as well as it further aiding the Big Ten’s argument for the nation’s best conference.
