Nebraska coach to join Texas Tech staff

Garret McGuire will join his father Joey at Texas Tech.

Former Nebraska football wide receivers coach Garret McGuire is expected to join the Texas Tech Red Raiders coaching staff, according to Zach Barnett of Football Scoop.

McGuire was with the Huskers from 2022-2023. He was previously with Matt Rhule as a member of the Carolina Panthers coaching staff from 2021-22.

The Huskers ranked seventh in the Big Ten in total receiving yards, with 2,737 on the year. Nebraska football hired former Kentucky Wildcats wide receiver coach Dakiel Shorts for the same position earlier this week.

McGuire was able to recruit multiple impact players during his tenure in Lincoln. He was able to bring Cortez Mills, Isaiah Mozee Dae’vonn Hall, Jacory Barney Jr., and Isaiah McMorris into the program.

This opens up another spot for offensive coordinator Dana Holgerson to add another coach to the staff. It’s clear the Nebraska football offense is getting a makeover. It will be interesting to see who else they can bring in.

Nebraska set to hire new wide receivers coach

Daikiel Shorts is set to lead the wide receivers room for Nebraska.

This story was updated to correct a misspelling/typo.

Nebraska football is expected to hire Kentucky Wildcats coach Daikiel Shorts as its new wide receiver coach. Shorts worked under offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen while at Houston.

Shorts was a former member of the ’30 under 30′ coaches list. He played for Holgorsen at West Virginia and first began his coaching career at Houston. He served as support staff for the Cougars from 2018-2020.

Shorts then became the wide receivers coach from 2021-2023. While with the Cougars, he worked for several notable players, including current Houston Texans receiver Tank Dell.

Shorts will replace former wide receivers coach Garret McGuire, who served the position from 2022-2023. At first glance, this hire makes sense for Nebraska. At the very least, Holgerson was able to bring in someone he is familiar with as the program tries to revamp the offensive unit.

Huskers agree to two-year extension with Dana Holgorsen

The Husker offensive coordinator is staying put for the next couple of years.

Nebraska offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen agreed to a two-year contract extension on Monday. The new deal will pay Holgorsen $1.2 million.

Holgorsen took over as the offensive coordinator and play-caller from Marcus Satterfield in mid-November. The Huskers clinched their sixth win under Holgorsen, as the offense showed improvement throughout the last three games.

Their best performance came in a 44-25 victory over the Wisconsin Badgers. During that game, the Huskers had their highest point total since 2021, while their 473 yards of total offense was the second-highest output of the season.

Reports have stated that he is not expected to retain wide receivers coach Garret McGuire as part of his offensive staff.

It will undoubtedly be interesting to see how this affects the Nebraska offense. He brought a spark to the unit and will now have at least two full seasons to continue building. One must wonder who he will bring in as a wide receivers coach and what other staff changes will be made in the future.

Receivers coach Garrett McGuire pleased with Carter Nelson’s development

Carter Nelson was a four-star recruit in the 2024 recruiting class.

In an interview earlier this week, Nebraska wide receivers coach Garrett McGuire was complementary of newly converted wide receiver Carter Nelson.

Nelson was recruited out of high school as a tight end. Last month, the program announced that the Ainsworth native would begin his college career as a wide receiver.

The eight-man football star was a receiving threat at the high school level out of the tight end position. He recorded 32 catches for 658 yards and 14 touchdowns last year.

The Huskers currently boast a crowded tight end room for the 2024 season, including Thomas Fidone and Nate Boerkircher. Younger names, such as Ian Flynt and Eric Ingwerson, are also in the room.

In the meantime, McGuire has been pleased with Nelson’s transition to the wide receiver position, as transcribed by Husker247’s Brian Christopherson.

“In the recruiting process we got to watch him play a few times, watch him play basketball, and I didn’t really realize how explosive of an athlete he is. Obviously you see him pole vaulting … and all that stuff but, man, he is an explosive athlete. He’s dominant on the perimeter a lot like Janiran (Bonner) when it comes to blocking. But he is a competitor. He wants to compete.”

Time will tell how easily Nelson makes the transition to wide receiver. That said, there is little doubt he has athletic skills. The Huskers want to put their best athletes on the field, and Nelson certainly fits that category.
