New Orleans Pelicans hire former Bulls GM Gar Forman to front office role

The New Orleans Pelicans will reportedly hire former Chicago Bulls general manager Gar Forman to a front office rule with a focus on scouting.

The New Orleans Pelicans reportedly added a former general manager to their front office on Thursday. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Pelicans agreed to a deal with Gar Forman, who served as the Chicago Bulls general manager from 2009 until April of 2020.

Also per Wojnarowski, Forman will focus his work in the scouting area under executive vice president of basketball operations David Griffin and general manager Trajan Langdon.

Forman was a divisive figure in his time with the Bulls. Despite drafting the likes of Derrick Rose and Jimmy Butler but also took much criticism in his time in charge, largely for the team’s failure to field a reliable competitor.

Still, Forman is a respected executive and can bring some experience to a front office in the midst of its rebuild. Clearly holding an eye for talent, Forman can provide the team a boost in the scouting department considering the bevy of draft picks they will have available in the future.

“I gave up a lot of money to stay with the Bulls,” Deng said to Tshabalala, alluding to a past contract (presumably, a six-year, $71 million extension he inked as a 23-year-old in 2008) he said he signed with the team against the wishes of some in his camp, who wanted him to explore more lucrative options elsewhere. “So when they came back again for my next contract, the year before the contract, me and Thibs went in and we talked to Gar Forman, (who) at the time was the GM, and we said, I want to sign right now before the free agency comes up and other people offer money. And at the time, he said — I was 27? 28? — he told me to take another team discount. “And I remember saying, ‘Why would I take another team discount? Why is there a discount again?’ You know, because this is when I was an All-Star. So he said, ‘We want you to take a team discount.’ So I was like, ‘OK, what’s a team discount?’ and he didn’t discuss anything. And at the time, it didn’t make sense for where I’m at, at the best of my career.”

Gar Forman is expected to pursue scouting opportunities with other teams. Sources said the Bulls planned to offer some form of settlement on the two remaining years on Forman’s contract. Though Forman sometimes rankled some agents and executives with his secretive ways, he has developed a leaguewide reputation as an elite talent evaluator. Drafting Jimmy Butler at No. 30 and Taj Gibson at No. 26 are concrete examples of this.

The Reinsdorfs are known for their loyalty and Paxson, along with Gar Forman, who has held the general manager title since 2009, has headed basketball operations for 17 years. But the perception that Paxson will be some hovering presence, going kicking and screaming into the night, is simply wrong. Early this season, Paxson communicated his vision to ownership for a new-look, more modern front office. He initiated some of this need for change.

The Chicago Bulls are making changes at the top, having reportedly launched a search to replace long-time executive vice president John Paxton and general manager Gar Forman. And the Dallas Mavericks may have a top-notch candidate. “Michael Finley would be amazing in that role,” Mavs owner Mark Cuban tells DallasBasketball.com. “Fin has had a huge impact on the Mavs. … Amazing.”
