For us at GLHF Gamescom 2023 was a frantic few days of running from booth to booth trying the most exciting upcoming games and then hurriedly running to our next appointment. Over the three press days, we were able to try out around 50 games, and so many of them were exceedingly impressive. Now that the show is over and we’ve had time to reflect, a few of them have stayed with us

Here’s five things we didn’t expect to see at Gamescom 2023 in Cologne.

Gamescom is Europe’s largest gaming convention, where hundreds of thousands of people gather to hear all the biggest gaming announcements, get their hands on the most long-awaited games, and have the chance to play some games before they are even announced. With more than 10 halls packed with games over three different floors, it can be intimidating. Even with it being open to the public for four days, there is absolutely no way you could see everything. This year was different to others if only because of how it has panned out so far. It’s not a stretch to say that 2023 has been the best year in gaming so far, and everyone wanted to prove themselves at the convention.

GLHF were out there at Gamescom, taking in the atmosphere, talking to developers, and getting a first look at some of the best games still to come. Here’s five things I didn’t expect to see while I was at Gamescom 2023 in Cologne, Germany.

Gamescom starts this week, and as Europe’s biggest gaming convention there will be a number of huge gaming reveals for upcoming and unannounced games. Recently, a number of companies have decided to host their own smaller showcases, like the Xbox Games Showcase or Nintendo Directs, rather than taking part in larger showcases. These big-scale conventions are still around, whether that’s Summer Game Fest, Tokyo Game Show or Gamescom. With all eyes in the gaming industry set on Cologne this year, here’s the top three reasons you should be watching Gamescom this year.
