Alabama vs. Mercer: Predictions and analysis

Roll Tide Wire makes its third prediction of the 2023-2024 season as Alabama takes on the Mercer Bears.

Alabama (3-0) will take on Mercer (1-2) on Friday, Nov. 17th. The Crimson Tide come into the game averaging over 100 points per game. On the other hand, the Bears average a little over 65 points per game.

Mercer lost Game 1 against Clark Atlanta 74-66. That is a tough loss for the Bears as Clark Atlanta should have been a sure-fire win given the fact that they are a Division-2 team.

In Game 2, the Bears got back in the win column after knocking off Chicago State 66-61. Then, Mercer fell 74-66 to a common opponent, the Morehead State Eagles. Alabama defeated Morehead State 105-73 in the first game of the 2023-2024 season.

Ultimately, Alabama should be able to make things look easy in Game 4 of the season against Mercer. To do so, the Crimson Tide will need to neutralize the Bears’ leading scorers — Jalyn McCreary and Robby Carmody.

Alabama has improved each game on the defensive end of the floor. It will be a tall task for the Bears to come into Coleman Coliseum and pick up a win.

I like Alabama big in the fourth game of the season. My final score prediction is Alabama 100, Mercer 64.

Thoughts and Things To Know: Lonnie Walker IV ices Warriors late in Game 4 as Lakers take 3-1 lead

Lonnie Walker IV broke out in the fourth quarter to ice the Warriors in Game 4 to give the Lakers a commanding 3-1 lead in the second round series.

With a seven point lead heading into the final frame, the Golden State Warriors were just 12 minutes away from evening the series against the Los Angeles Lakers at 2-2 and flying back to the Bay Area for a home game in Game 5.

While the series will still shift back to San Francisco for Game 5, things won’t be tied at 2-2 with the Lakers and Warriors. In the fourth quarter, the Lakers leaned on an unexpected hero alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis to steal a late comeback 104-101 win in a thriller over the Warriors to take a commanding 3-1 lead in the series.

Before the Warriors face elimination in Game 5 against the Lakers on Wednesday, here’s some thoughts and things to know from Game 4 on Monday night.

NBA Twitter reacts to Warriors falling down 3-1 after dropping late battle vs. Lakers in Game 4

The Warriors had no answer for Lonnie Walker IV in the fourth quarter as they fell down 3-1 to the Lakers with a 104-101 loss in Game 4.

If the Golden State Warriors were going to fall down 3-1 to the Los Angeles Lakers, it would likely come by the hands of LeBron James or Anthony Davis. While the Lakers duo did their job, it was an unlikely hero who stunned the Warriors in the fourth quarter on Monday night in Hollywood.

After a strong third quarter, the Warriors carried a seven-point lead into the final frame with a chance to even the series before heading back to the Bay Area. Despite not taking a shot through 15 minutes of playing time, Lonnie Walker IV came alive off the bench for the Lakers in the fourth quarter.

Walker IV tallied 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field in the fourth quarter alone. Walker IV continued to knock down clutch shots while helping the Lakers deplete the Warriors’ advantage.

After the Lakers took control late behind Walker IV’s surprise breakout performance, Steph Curry had back-to-back looks at hitting game-tying jumpers. Yet, the defending NBA Finals MVP’s shot went cold in the final seconds as the Warriors fell to the Lakers, 104-101.

Following the Warriors’ loss in Game 4 to drop to 3-1 in the second-round series to the Lakers, the NBA community on Twitter chimed in with different reactions. Here’s a look at what fans and analysts were saying on Monday night.

NBA Twitter reacts to Warriors holding on vs. Kings in Game 4 to tie series at 2-2

With a Harrison Barnes miss at the buzzer in Game 4, the Warriors secured their second straight win against the Kings to even the series at 2-2.

After a back-and-forth battle, Game 4 between the Sacramento Kings and Golden State Warriors came down to the final shot.

Cruising to a 10-point lead to start the fourth quarter, Sacramento’s De’Aaron Fox came alive in crunch time again. The former Kentucky Wildcat guard lifted the Kings with 12 points in the fourth quarter as his backcourt mate Malik Monk added nine points down the stretch.

While Steph Curry tallied 10 points in the final frame to pace Fox and Monk, Game 4 still got tight as the clock ran down to the wire. With the Warriors’ offense cooling late, Fox buried a clutch triple to pull the Kings within a point with under 30 seconds remaining on the clock.

With the Warriors clinging to a one point lead, Harrison Barnes missed a potential game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer for Sacramento to help Golden State hang on in a battle, 126-125.

On the way to tying the series 2-2, Curry led the way for Golden State with 32 points on 11-of-22 shooting from the floor with five made 3-pointers to go along with five boards and three assists. Curry, Klay Thompson and Jordan Poole all registered 22 or more points in Game 4 against the Kings.

In his return from suspension, Draymond Green registered an impressive performance off the bench with 12 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and a steal and a block in 31 minutes.

Following a botched timeout call from Curry that lead to a Monk technical free throw, Fox notched a game-high 38 points on 14-of-31 shooting from the field with nine boards and five assists in 40 minutes.

Both teams will get two days off before the series heads back to Sacramento for Game 5 at Golden 1 Center on Wednesday evening.

Following the Warriors’ series-tying win, the NBA community on Twitter exploded with reactions. Here’s a look at what fans and analysts were saying on social media on Sunday.

Alabama basketball puts on scoring clinic to defeat Jacksonville State

Alabama’s mens basketball team knocked off in-state foe Jacksonville State by a score of 104-62.

It was a good night for the Alabama men’s basketball team to say the least. Not only did the Tide score 104 points, but they also held a good Jacksonville State team to 62 points. Last season, the matchup was a tight game that resulted in a 65-59 victory for the Tide. This time around Nate Oats’ squad pulled away with a 104-62 victory.

Offensively, the Tide were led by freshman Brandon Miller. He scored 29 points while shooting 9-12 from the field and 7-9 from three-point range. Guards Nimari Burnett and Mark Sears put on a shooting clinic as they combined to shoot 11-20 from the field and provided 36 points.

There were several other positives to take away from the team’s performance on Friday night. The Tide out-rebounded the Gamecocks 45-22. On the defensive end of the floor, the team was able to limit Ray Harper’s squad to shooting 35.2% from the field.

Altogether, this was the most impressive win in the season up to this point. The Tide will need to carry this success into next week as they will travel to Portland, Oregon to compete in the Phil Knight Invitational. There next game will be Thursday, November 24 against Michigan State. Tipoff is set for 10:30 p.m. EST and will be televised on ESPN.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Alabama basketball as the season progresses.

3 observations: Steph Curry helps Warriors steal Game 4 vs. Grizzlies with fourth quarter rally

Here’s a look at three observations from the Warriors’ late comeback win in Game 4 against the Grizzlies to take a 3-1 lead in the series.

After scoring 142 points in a blowout win over the Memphis Grizzlies in Game 3, the Golden State Warriors looked like a different team in Game 4. Collectively, the Warriors could not find the bottom of the net at Chase Center on Monday night.

The Warriors started the contest shooting an uncharacteristic 0-of-15 from beyond the arc. Golden State didn’t bury a triple until late in the second quarter. At halftime, the Warriors recorded a lowly 2-of-20 from long distance.

Despite the absence of Ja Morant due to injury, the Grizzlies were able to hold a lead over the Warriors throughout Game 4. However, when it mattered most, Steph Curry came to the rescue.

As Memphis went cold and settled for tough shots down the stretch, the two-time Most Valuable Player fueled a late run to steal Game 4 in favor of Golden State, 101-98.

With the Warriors holding a commanding 3-1 lead in the series, here are three observations from Game 4 on Monday night.

Lakers report card: Player grades for Game 4 loss against Suns

Individual player grades for the Los Angeles Lakers’ loss to the Phoenix Suns in Game 4.

The Los Angeles Lakers lost Game 4 at home to the Phoenix Suns, subsequently losing the series lead.

With both teams evened up at 2-2, the series now heads back to Phoenix for Game 5.

Both squads exchanged runs for much of the first half in a defensive slugfest, but Anthony Davis left the game with a left groin strain towards the end of the second quarter, which turned the tide considerably.

The Suns came out in the third quarter with the momentum, and they’d outscore Los Angeles 27-15.

Los Angeles didn’t have enough offense left in the tank without Davis, ending in a disappointing 100-92 loss.

Here are the individual player grades for the Lakers:

3 takeaways: Lakers lose Game 4 as Suns tie series, 2-2

Three takeaways from the Los Angeles Lakers’ Game 4 loss to the Phoenix Suns.

The Los Angeles Lakers dropped Game 4 at home as the Phoenix Suns claimed a 100-92 victory.

The series is now knotted at 2-2 with Game 5 occurring in Phoenix.

Los Angeles looked sloppy from the opening tipoff. They finally made some 3-pointers, a huge struggle for the team in the first three games, but couldn’t muster quality looks at the paint.

The Lakers took it up a notch in the early stages of the second quarter, opening up an 11-point lead with LeBron James throwing down big dunks and Ben McLemore getting involved with 3-pointers.

However, as Phoenix fought back, Anthony Davis went down with a left groin strain towards the end of the half and wouldn’t return for the rest of the game.

Phoenix outscored L.A. 27-15 in the third quarter, putting them in prime position to steal a game on the road. Though Los Angeles attempted a comeback to make it a single-digit deficit, Phoenix’s defense came through to seal the win.

Here are three takeaways from Game 4:

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope ruled out for Game 4 vs. Suns

The Los Angeles Lakers announced Kentavious Caldwell-Pope won’t play in Game 4 with a left quad contusion.

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope won’t play in Game 4 against the Phoenix Suns with a left quad contusion, the Los Angeles Lakers announced.

Caldwell-Pope initially went down in the third quarter of Game 3 when his left leg bucked while trying to avoid fouling Devin Booker.

The Lakers gave an update on Caldwell-Pope Saturday after an MRI, saying there wasn’t any significant damage and he’d be day-to-day moving forward.

With Caldwell-Pope, head coach Frank Vogel expressed confidence in Wesley Matthews moving up to the starting lineup.

Matthews stepped up after Caldwell-Pope left Game 3, knocking down two big 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to build Los Angeles’ double-digit lead.

Caldwell-Pope got shots up pre-game to test out his leg, via Brad Turner of the L.A. Times:

L.A. will miss Caldwell-Pope’s stellar defense on Booker, but Matthews, the 34-year-old veteran, can also step up to the challenge in a pivotal game.

Suns at Lakers: Key storylines entering Game 4

Looking at the key storylines for Game 4 between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Phoenix Suns in a game with high stakes.

The stakes are high in Game 4 as the Los Angeles Lakers have one more game at home before the series shifts back to Phoenix.

The Lakers grasped the series lead, 2-1, following their Game 3 victory Thursday, winning by 14 points. The margin marked the largest win any of the teams have had in the series.

Anthony Davis has found his rhythm, dropping 34 points in two straight wins, which led all scorers in both games.

The Phoenix Suns couldn’t muster any points for long stretches in Game 3, as the Lakers finally made life difficult for Devin Booker, who had poured in over 30 points in the first two games at home.

Chris Paul’s health has been the overarching concern for the Suns. His shoulder hasn’t held up since it was first injured in Game 1, but he’s played through it.

Let’s look at key storylines for the series as it heads to Game 4:
