The Chicago Bears on Monday announced they have waived Gage Cervenka.

Cervenka signed with the Bears on Aug. 8 after visiting with the team earlier that week and was also on Chicago’s offseason roster in May.

The Greenwood, S.C., native served as Clemson’s backup center during the entire 2017 season before earning a starting role at guard (and one spot start at center) in 2018, then was a second-team All-ACC selection in 2019 when he played 768 snaps in 15 games (all starts), helping Clemson finish fourth in the nation in points per game (43.9) and fifth in total offense (school-record 528.7 yards per game).

One of the strongest players in Clemson history, Cervenka set the program position record for bench press reps at 225 pounds (44). He redshirted as a defensive tackle before switching to offensive line in August 2016.

Bears waive 3 players ahead of Tuesday’s first roster cuts deadline

With the first preseason game in the books, the first round of cuts have begun for the Bears, who waived three players Monday.

With the first preseason game in the books, the first round of cuts have begun for the Chicago Bears.

The Bears have released offensive lineman Gage Cervenka, defensive back Dionte Ruffin and wide receiver Jester Weah, the team announced Monday.

The first roster deadline will have teams trimming their rosters from 90 to 85 (Aug. 17). Following the second preseason game, teams will need to trim their roster from 85 to 80 by the following Tuesday (Aug. 24). The final round of cuts will be a big one, as teams will need to trim their rosters from 80 to 53 players the Tuesday after the final preseason game (Aug. 31).

With the Bears signing perennial left tackle Jason Peters to a one-year deal, they’ll have to make a corresponding roster move, which means Chicago will be cutting six players this week.

The Bears have until Tuesday at 3 p.m. CT to cut two additional players (technically a third, given the roster move they make when the Peters signing becomes official).

Here are some other players who could be on the chopping block:
