Colorado State at Fresno State: Three things to know

  1. Colorado State was expected to host New Mexico in their season opener last week, but due to COVID-19 concerns in Bernalillo County, N.M., where UNM is located, the game was canceled with no plans to reschedule.
  2. Opening its 2020 campaign at home last week, Fresno State was trampled by Hawaii 34-19. The Bulldogs yielded 323 rushing yards, while coughing up 552 total yards overall. The bright spot for Fresno State was DE Kwami Jones, who rolled up three sacks and five solo stops.
  3. These teams met last season in “The Valley” with Colorado State coming away with a 41-31 road victory as 13.5-point underdogs as the Over connected. Colorado State has cashed in five of the past seven meetings in this series, while the Over has hit in four straight meetings at Bulldog Stadium.

Colorado State at Fresno State: Odds, prediction, betting lines and picks

Prediction

Colorado State 29, Fresno State 24

Money line (ML)

We had our first look at Fresno State (+100), and the first impression wasn’t great. We haven’t had the chance to see COLORADO STATE (-121) yet, as head coach Steve Addazio takes over at the helm. Gone is WR Warren Jackson, but WR Dante Wright should fill his shoes admirably, and the Rams have experience with QB Patrick O’Brien back under center. It won’t be pretty, and there will likely be some rust, but the Rams will get it done on the road.

Against the spread (ATS)

COLORADO STATE (-1.5, -110) will cost you a little less, and it’s a good play laying the points rather than simply playing the money line.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 59.5 (-106) is a good play as the Under has hit in 10 of the past 11 conference tilts for Colorado State. While we have yet to see what the version of the Rams looks like under Addazio, his teams are generally a defense-first, lower-scoring kind of side. Fresno opened with a subpar offensive effort last week, and the Under is 22-8 in its previous 30 MWC contests.

The Hawaii Rainbow Warriors and Fresno State Bulldogs open their respective seasons with a Saturday tilt at 7:30 p.m. ET at Bulldog Stadium. We analyze the Hawaii-Fresno State college football betting odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Hawaii at Fresno State: Betting odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Thursday at 2:45 p.m. ET.

  • Money line: Hawaii +150 (bet $100 to win $150) | Fresno State -182 (bet $182 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Hawaii +4 (-110) | Fresno State -4 (-110)
  • Over/Under: 67.5 (O: -106 | U: -115)

Hawaii at Fresno State: Three things to know

  1. Hawaii went 10-5 last season, averaging 33.9 points per game while yielding 31.9. Fresno State went just 4-8 last year, after going a combined 22-6 over 2017-18. In 2019, Fresno State averaged 30.0 points per game while allowing 30.1. The Bulldogs defeated the Rainbow Warriors 41-38 Nov. 2 and own a 17-15-1 edge in the all-time series.
  2. Former Arizona State head coach Todd Graham is Hawaii’s new sideline boss. Graham inherits an offense with a new starting quarterback (sophomore Chevan Cordeiro, who threw eight touchdown passes in 120 attempts as a freshman), and it’s a group which is also replacing three of its top four receivers from 2019. Hawaii threw for 337.1 yards per game last season (fifth in FBS) and has ranked in the top 10 of the nation in that category each of the last two years.
  3. Kalen DeBoer replaces Jeff Tedford as head coach for the Bulldogs. Look for the former Bulldogs offensive coordinator  (2017-18) to reestablish the Bulldogs as a solid running team that plays shutdown defense. Fresno had a lot of game-control wins by holding foes under 16.0 PPG over 2017-18.

Hawaii at Fresno State: Odds, prediction, betting lines and picks

Prediction

Fresno State 31, Hawaii 28

Money line (ML)

PASS. The new coaches, offensive personnel question marks, and extended preseason make for a few too many question marks.

Against the spread (ATS)

Pegging this one around a 3-to-5-point margin of victory for the more recruit-talented Bulldogs is reasonable. PASS.

Over/Under (O/U)

The strong play here is on the total. Both teams have enough question marks on offense to warrant skepticism on how they perform on passing downs and in red-zone situations. A late lead for Fresno figures to be one iced with a measured approach. BACK THE UNDER 67.5 (-115).
