Browns work out WR Derrick Willies, 2 others this week

Willies spent 2018-2019 with the Browns including a stint on the active roster

The Cleveland Browns brought in a familiar face for a tryout this week. Wide receiver Derrick Willies was back in Berea for a workout with the team, one of three players the Browns auditioned this week per the NFL’s transaction reports.

Willies made the Browns in 2018 as an undrafted free agent out of Texas Tech. He caught three passes for 61 yards in limited duty as a rookie before getting hurt and ending the season on injured reserve. Willies then participated with the Browns in the 2019 preseason but failed to make the final roster. The 6-foot-4 wideout spent the 2019 campaign on the Browns’ practice squad.

The Browns also worked out Cale Garrett and Marcus Green.

Garrett is a linebacker from Missouri. Green played wide receiver at Louisiana-Monroe and was a sixth-round draft pick by the Falcons in 2019. He led the NCAA in kick return yardage and TDs in his junior season for the Warhawks.

Browns hold tryouts for 6 players, visits for 2 others

All of the tryouts were with defensive players

Browns GM Andrew Berry continues to explore every opportunity to try and add talent to the roster he’s assembling in Cleveland. Fulfilling his oft-repeated promise from his press conference at the 2020 NFL Scouting Combine, Berry and the Browns held auditions for eight more players.

Six of the players were designated as tryouts per the NFL’s transaction wire, while two others were labeled visits.

The six tryouts were all on defense:

Jeremiah Dinson, S

Austin Hall, LB

Jalen Jelks, DE

Vosean Joseph, LB

Chris Miller, S

E.J. Scott, DT

The most notable is Joseph, a 2019 fifth-round pick by the Buffalo Bills out of Florida. None of the tryouts have any experience on an NFL regular-season active roster.

The visits included a kicker, Matthew McCrane, as well as LB Garrett Cale.

None of the players have been signed as of Tuesday morning.

This week’s Browns free agent workouts were rushed a bit with the team hosting the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday night. Cleveland still managed to bring in a couple of former Philadelphia Eagles defenders to kick the tires on a possible signing.

Per Adam Caplan of Sirius XM NFL Radio, the Browns worked out safety Tre Sullivan and DT Destiny Vaeao.

Sullivan has spent most of his first two NFL seasons on the Eagles’ practice squad. He did not make the team out of the preseason and was drafted into the XFL, but is still trying to keep the NFL dream alive.

Vaeao played in all 16 games for the Eagles as a rookie when the team won the Super Bowl. He has battled injury issues since and was most recently with the Carolina Panthers.

Neither player was immediately signed.
