Dabo Swinney makes history as Clemson football’s all-time winningest head coach with his 166th win

Dabo Swinney made history with Clemson’s big win over Notre Dame.

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney made history with the Tigers’ huge win over Notre Dame, doing it in front of the Clemson faithful.

Earning his 166th win on Saturday, Swinney is now Clemson football’s all-time winningest head coach. He passed the legendary Frank Howard, achieving this tremendous feat.

Swinney started his head coaching career with the Tigers in the middle of the 2008 season, and in his 15th season as the Tigers head coach, he is building a great, college football all-time resume. It was a sweet victory for the Tigers and their head coach, and it is also one that will be in the Clemson history books.

Dabo Swinney ties Clemson legend Frank Howard’s all-time wins record

Dabo Swinney is one game away from making Clemson history.

Dabo Swinney and the Tigers would have liked to look better in their 17-12 win over Wake Forest, but the win was enough to tie Swinney with a legendary Clemson head coach.

The win earned Swinney his 165th as Clemson’s head coach, tying College Football Hall of Famer Frank Howard as the Tigers’ all-time winningest head coach. Swinney’s record now sits at 165-41 all-time, with Howard ending his historic career with a 165-118-12 record.

It is an outstanding achievement for Swinney, but the head coach is one more win away from even greater history. With a win in Week 8, Swinney will become Clemson’s all-time leader in wins as a head coach.

Swinney and Clemson fans will have to wait, as the Tigers have a Week 7 bye before they travel to face Miami at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida on October 21st.

Every College Football Hall of Fame member for Clemson

Dating back to 1954, eight former Clemson players or coaches have received the honor of being inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Founded in 1951 by the National Football Foundation, the College Football Hall of Fame is highly selective in its induction process, with less than 1,300 people receiving the honor.

While Clemson will undoubtedly have future inductees because of its success over the past decade, eight members who coached or played at Clemson have already been inducted, one of which earned the honor in 2021.

Clemson has a chance to produce its ninth member in the coming years, as former linebacker Levon Kirkland is on the 2023 ballot. Earning All-American honors three times in college, Kirkland finished with 273 career tackles (40 for loss) and 19 career sacks.

Fans will have to wait until next year to see if Kirkland makes the cut, but here are Clemson’s current eight College Football Hall of Fame members in order by the year they were inducted.
