Philadelphia Flyers at Pittsburgh Penguins odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Sunday’s Philadelphia Flyers at Pittsburgh Penguins odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Philadelphia Flyers (29-33-13) begin a 4-game road trip on Sunday against the Pittsburgh Penguins (37-29-10) at PPG Paints Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 6 p.m. Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Flyers vs. Penguins odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Flyers enter this cross-state affair on a 2-game skid and all but out of the playoff picture down 14 points with 7 games to go. Philly has been without tendy Carter Hart due to a lower-body injury over the past week and recalled Sunday’s likely starter, Samuel Ersson, on an emergency basis.

Pittsburgh dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker to the Boston Bruins in the final 3 minutes Saturday. The Pens are just 3-7-0 in the last 10 and have fallen a point behind Florida for the final Wild-Card spot. They’ll look to make a statement Sunday as 4 of their last 6 are against non-playoff teams.

Flyers at Penguins projected goalies

Samuel Ersson (6-1-0, 3.07 GAA, .898 SV%, 1 SO) vs. Casey DeSmith (14-16-4, 3.20 GAA, .904 SV%)

The 23-year-old Swede’s career opened at 6-0 earlier this season before allowing 7 goals to New Jersey Feb. 25. He was solid between the pipes outside of that and another 5-goal game. He’ll face intense pressure from a desperate Penguins club Sunday.

DeSmith saw a lot of action in March with 5 starts and 3 relief efforts. He went 3-4-0 with a 2.94 GAA and .900 SV%. He beat the Flyers March 11 and stopped 31 of 32 shots along the way. Starting tendy Tristan Jarry has been hurt a lot over the last few years, and DeSmith has been tested during the stretch run.

Flyers at Penguins picks and predictions

Prediction

Penguins 4, Flyers 2

Moneyline

The Penguins have been great at home with a 21-12-5 mark at PPG, and they’re playing must-win tilts from here on out.  The only thing that might move the needle for the Flyers is if Hart is able to return from injury Sunday. The Pens have got to him, though, for 8 goals in 2 games this season.

Pittsburgh gets it done, but steer clear of the -250 ML. Take the PENGUINS -155 on the 3-WAY LINE as they should not need overtime to secure the victory.

Puck line/Against the spread

Pittsburgh has been great at home overall but is a terrible 11-27 on the puck line at PPG. I do see Pittsburgh with a multi-goal win, but I need more than +100 considering they’re so bad on the puck line at home and 3-7 overall in the last 10. Instead, I look for Sidney Crosby to take charge. His assist Saturday was his 1st point in the last 4 games. He has a goal in each game against the Flyers this season. Sprinkle SIDNEY CROSBY ANYTIME GOAL SCORER +120.

Over/Under

Philadelphia is 7-3-0 O/U in the last 10, and Pittsburgh is 5-5-0. The Over is 5-1 over the last 6 the Flyers played on no rest. The Over is also 16-6-2 in the last 24 meetings between the teams in Pittsburgh.

The Under cashed in both games between the teams this season, but that was because Philly could only muster 1 goal in each. It feels like an Under game again Sunday despite the presence of backup tendies.

LEAN UNDER 6.5 (-110).

Philadelphia Flyers at Pittsburgh Penguins odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Thursday’s Philadelphia Flyers at Pittsburgh Penguins NHL odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Philadelphia Flyers (19-17-6) travel to meet the Pittsburgh Penguins (27-13-2) Thursday with a 7 p.m. ET puck drop at PPG Paints Arena. Below, we analyze the Flyers-Penguins odds and lines, with NHL picks and predictions.

The Flyers are in freefall, falling in four of the past five outings, including a 6-1 beatdown in Washington last time out on Tuesday. Perhaps a meeting with Pittsburgh will snap them out of it, as they have won three of the first five against their Keystone State rivals this season.

The Penguins streak in with three victories in a row, including a two-game sweep of the New Jersey Devils in Newark by an 11-6 count. The Penguins have scored four or more games in six straight outings, hitting the Over in each of their past five contests.

Flyers at Penguins: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 10:18 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Flyers +140 (bet $100 to win $140) | Penguins -165 (bet $165 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Flyers +1.5 (-165) | Penguins -1.5 (+140)
  • Over/Under: 6.5 (O: +100 | U: -120)

Flyers at Penguins: Projected starting goalies

Carter Hart (8-11-5, 3.79 GAA, .872 SV%, 1 SO) vs. Tristan Jarry (17-8-2, 2.84 GAA, .907 SV%)

Hart hasn’t won in seven starts dating back to March 18, but he has been a little better after a few disastrous starts. He coughed up 15 goals on 71 shots in his final three starts in March, but he has allowed just 11 goals on 102 shots in his four outings in April. However, he has received just nine total goals of offensive support.

Jarry has picked up back-to-back victories against the Rangers and Devils on the road, and he has yielded just three goals or fewer in 11 of his past 12 appearances. However, he is just 2-3-0 with a 4.32 GAA and .864 SV% in five starts against the Flyers this season.

Flyers at Penguins: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Penguins 5, Flyers 3

Money line (ML)

The PENGUINS (-165) are on a roll with 20 victories across the past 28 games, and they’re 5-1 in the past six against teams with a losing overall record.

The Flyers (+140) are skidding hard, winning just once in the past five outings, and they’re also 1-4 in the past five on the road. They’re also a dismal 4-14 in the previous 18 as an underdog and just 3-10 in the past 13 against winning teams.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The PENGUINS -1.5 (+140) are worth a play on the puck line, as they have won by two or more goals in each of the three games during their win streak.

Pittsburgh has also won 13 of its last 14 games by two or more goals, so if you’re backing Pittsburgh, you need to take them on the puck line, too.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 6.5 (+100) is worth playing lightly. The Over has cashed in five straight for Pittsburgh, as they have averaged 5.0 goals per game during the span. Conversely, Philadelphia has allowed 11 total goals in their past two losses.

  • Over/Under: 6.5 (O: +100 | U: -120)

Flyers at Penguins: Projected starting goalies

Carter Hart (6-3-3, .899 SV%, 3.35 GAA) vs. Tristan Jarry (7-6-1, .894 SV%, 3.14 GAA)

Sunday’s performance against the Sabres was Hart’s best of the season and followed a loss against the Boston Bruins in which he allowed 6 goals on 23 shots and was pulled after two periods. He’s 2-1-2 in his last five games. He’s 2-0-0 in two starts against the Pens this season with 62 saves on 67 shots.

Jarry is 4-1-0 over his last five games and has returned to his breakout 2019-20 form. His most recent start was a win over the New York Islanders in which he allowed 3 goals on 27 shots. His season began with back-to-back road losses against these Flyers with a total of 9 goals allowed.

Flyers at Penguins: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Flyers 4, Penguins 2

Money line (ML)

The FLYERS (-105) come in with the winning streak, have at least a small edge in the goaltending battle and are 2-0 against the rival Pens this season with an 11-5 lead in total goals.

Rest is equal with both teams last playing Sunday; Pittsburgh was shut out 2-0 by the Islanders and Philly blanked the Sabres 3-0.

The Flyers remain at the bottom of the league in 5-on-5 Corsi For percentage (46.61) and scoring chances for (47.87) but they have the talent up front to be opportunistic on offense. Back Philly for a modest road upset.

Against the spread (ATS)

Go to the alternate line of FLYERS -1.5 (+240) for top value in this game. The Flyers are 11-7 against the spread for the season and beat the Penguins by a 3-goal margin in each of their first two head-to-head meetings.

Additionally, the Penguins are 0-4 in their last four outings when playing their third game in four days and the Flyers are 4-0-1 in that same situation.

Over/Under (O/U)

Back the UNDER 6.5 (-120) with both goaltenders slowly recovering from atrocious starts to the season. The Penguins played to the Under in five of their last seven games and the Flyers are coming off the back-to-back shutout victories.
