Three Clemson games ranked among college football’s 24 most important of the 2024 season

Clemson has some of the most important college football games of the 2024 season.

Dabo Swinney and the Clemson football program have a huge year ahead of them in 2024, with many opportunities to prove that they remain one of the top dogs in college football.

Opportunity can be everything and the Tigers have multiple to prove their point… Clemson is going nowhere. The real questions surround whether the Tigers will take advantage of their opportunities.

247Sports recently released an article naming college football’s 24 most important games for the 2024 season. Clemson landed on the list for three separate games. Three games are among the most important in all of college football for 2024, and they pose serious opportunities for the Tigers.

Here is a look at each of the three games and what writer Brad Crawford had to say about them.

Back Rodney Hill switches allegiances from FSU to Miami

In a surprising twist, Rodney Hill has left his scholarship at Florida State to walk on at Miami, bringing a new dynamic to the Hurricanes’ backfield. His decision adds depth to an already strong lineup.

The Hurricanes reached into the transfer portal, securing the talents of former Florida State running back Rodney Hill. After two seasons with the Seminoles, Hill made the bold move of leaving his scholarship at FSU to walk on at Miami.

Emerging from Bulloch Academy in Statesboro, Georgia, as part of the 2022 class, Rodney Hill garnered attention as a three-star prospect. His potential was recognized by notable programs, including Texas A&M, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Michigan State, Kentucky, Wisconsin, UCF, Pitt, and Maryland, all of whom extended offers.

During his last season at FSU, the 5-foot-10, 190-pound Hill racked up 190 yards and a touchdown, plus five receptions for 83 yards over 109 snaps, appearing in ten games. Initially, post-FSU, Hill intended to join Florida A&M under Coach Willie Simmons. However, Simmons’ shift to Duke’s coaching staff prompted Hill to reconsider, eventually finding his new football family in Coral Gables.

Miami’s 2024 backfield looks strong. Mark Fletcher, coming off a stellar freshman year with 514 yards and five touchdowns, leads the pack. Veterans like Henry Parrish and a cadre of young talents, including redshirt freshmen Chris Johnson and sophomores Ajay Allen and Trevonte’ Citizen, add depth. New signees Chris Wheatley-Humphrey and Jordan Lyle, a top-10 running back recruit, further strengthen the roster.

Breaking: Trever Jackson commits to Florida State

Trever Jackson commits to Florida State.

Trever Jackson gave a commitment to Florida State on Wednesday, adding yet another four-star talent to a top-10 class for the Seminoles.

A class of 2024 quarterback from Jones High School (Orlando, Florida), Jackson completed 55.4 percent of his passes for 916 yards his senior season. He had seven passing touchdowns.

Jackson also had 855 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns on the season. He checks in at 6-foot-2 and 185 pounds.

Jackson had a solid offer list that included Boston College, Illinois, Indiana, Miami, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Texas A&M and UCLA among others. Rivals ranks him as a four-star recruit and the No. 23 pro-style quarterback in the nation.

News of Jackson’s commitment was broken by ON3’s Hayes Fawcett:

He is the second quarterback commitment for Florida State in this recruiting class, joining Luke Kromenhoek (a four-star quarterback who is ranked the No. 35 overall recruit in the nation).

The 2024 recruiting class for Florida State came into the day ranked No. 7 in the nation by 247Sports.

Former Alabama LB Shawn Murphy transferring to Florida State

Former Alabama linebacker Shawn Murphy transferred to Florida State. Murphy, a former four-star, spent two seasons in Tuscaloosa.

It did not take long for former four-star and Alabama linebacker Shawn Murphy to find a new home. The Virginia native has committed to Florida State just one day after entering his name into the transfer portal.

Murphy spent two seasons in Tuscaloosa. He was primarily a reserve inside linebacker for the Crimson Tide. Murphy also contributed on special teams. Throughout his two-year career at Alabama, Murphy played in 18 games and recorded five tackles.

Murphy will reunite with several former Alabama teammates in Tallahassee. He will join former Alabama players Terrence Ferguson, Malik Benson, Roydell Williams, and Earl Little Jr.

It will be interesting to follow the Seminoles football program in 2024 given the amount of Alabama players that they have landed via the transfer portal.

4-star wide receiver Thomas Blackshear announces his top three

Thomas Blackshear is down to three schools.

Thomas Blackshear narrowed down his recruitment on Saturday as one of the nation’s top wide receivers is now down to three programs.

On3 ranks Blackshear as a four-star recruit and the No. 229 player in the nation. He is a three-star according to 247Sports and Rivals.

The class of 2024 athlete is 6-foot and 195 pounds. He is a good route runner with speed and a developing frame. Last year as a junior for Calvary Day School (Savannah, Georgia), he had 27 catches for 551 yards with five touchdowns.

The three programs still in it for Blackshear are Florida State, Georgia and Tennessee.

He made the post on Saturday afternoon via X, the social media platform that was formerly known as Twitter:

No timetable was released for Blackschear concerning a possible commitment date.

A number of programs made the cutting room floor for Blackshear including Alabama, Auburn, Kentucky, South Carolina, Vanderbilt and Virginia Tech among others.

Former Alabama RB Roydell Williams transferring to Florida State

On Saturday, former Alabama running back Roydell Williams transferred to Florida State. He became the fourth former Alabama player to transfer to the Seminoles this offseason.

In recent weeks, the Alabama football program lost its two feature backs — Jase McClellan (2024 NFL draft) and Roydell Williams (NCAA transfer portal). On Saturday, Williams decided to transfer to Florida State. The news comes a day after Williams took an official visit to Florida State.

Williams, an Alabama native, spent four seasons in Tuscaloosa. During his Alabama career, he had 234 carries for 1,165 yards and 11 touchdowns. He saw an increased role in Alabama’s offense this past season. As a senior, Williams had 111 carries for 560 yards and five touchdowns.

Williams will join three former teammates in Tallahassee. Wide receiver Malik Benson, cornerback Earl Little Jr., and interior offensive lineman Terrence Ferguson each transferred to Florida State this offseason.

It will be interesting to see what type of role Williams carves out in the Seminoles’ backfield. He will likely see more playing time in Tallahassee than he would have in a crowded, running back room in Tuscaloosa in 2024.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow the latest news regarding the Alabama football program and its former players in the NCAA transfer portal.

Social media reacts: Mike Norvell staying at Florida State

Mike Norvell is staying put at Florida State.

Florida State coach Mike Norvell took to X, the social media platform still commonly referred to as Twitter, shortly after noon on Friday to announce that he was staying put in Tallahassee.

Norvell, the recipient of the 2023 Bryant Award, had been one of the names rumored to be in the running for the Alabama coaching job after the news of Nick Saban’s retirement rippled across college football on Wednesday.

In his fourth season in Tallahassee, Norvell led the Seminoles to a 13-0 regular season and an ACC championship. His team narrowly missed the College Football Playoff in favor of 12-1 SEC champion Alabama, and Florida State was subsequently blasted 63-3 against Georgia in the Orange Bowl following numerous opt-outs and other departures from the program.

Multiple reports say Norvell’s new contract at FSU will pay him more than $10 million a year over the next eight years.

Here’s how fans and media members reacted to Norvell’s announcement.

Florida State head coach Mike Norvell staying with the Seminoles

Florida State head coach Mike Norvell will not be Alabama’s next HC.

Another coach in the Alabama head coaching search has announced that they are staying with their program.

Florida State head coach Mike Norvell was considered a top candidate for the job, but luckily for the Seminoles, he is sticking around. One of the best coaches in the country is staying in the ACC.

Norvell and the Seminoles had a breakout season, ending the regular season 13-0 with an ACC Championship win. We all know how bad their 63-3 Orange Bowl blowout loss was, but that wasn’t the FSU team we saw during the regular season.

Norvell has received an eight-year contract that is expected to pay him more than 10 million a year.

This is huge news as another piece in the story fades away as Dabo Swinney becoming the next Crimson Tide head coach becomes that much more likely. Hopefully, Swinney will remain with the program, but it’s anyone’s guess what happens next.

Florida State hit by NCAA for NIL recruiting violations

A look at the the NCAA’s punishment of Florida State for NIL-based recruiting violations.

The NCAA on Thursday announced serious recruiting violations and levied subsequent sanctions against a major college football program in one of the first such cases in the era of name, image, and likeness (NIL).

The organization ruled that Florida State assistant coach Alex Adams, the school’s offensive coordinator, violated recruiting rules stemming from a 2022 recruiting trip that involved a prominent NIL-related booster and one of the school’s NIL collectives, which were also punished.

The news was announced in an official, detailed report by the NCAA.

In doling out its punishment, the NCAA gave Florida State two years probation and announced a five-percent reduction in scholarships over the next two academic years. The school has also been docked seven official recruiting visits.

According to the NCAA, Atkins “facilitated an impermissible recruiting contact between a transfer prospect and a booster, according to an agreement released by the Division I Committee on Infractions.”

Atkins was found to have committed two Level II violations, which will result in a two-year show cause penalty levied against the coach by the NCAA.

A show-cause penalty against a coach means that any school who might wish to hire said coach would be required to explain its reasoning to NCAA officials.

Atkins also received a three-game suspension to begin the 2024 season.

From the NCAA’s official statement: “During the (2022) meeting, the booster encouraged the prospect to enroll at Florida State and offered him an NIL opportunity with the collective worth approximately $15,000 per month during his first year at the school.”

Atkins joined the staff at Florida State in 2020 after Mike Norvell accepted the school’s head coaching job. Norvell guided Memphis to a berth in the Cotton Bowl against Penn State in 2019. Atkins was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2022.

Clemson is scheduled to visit Florida State at Doak Campbell Stadium in 2024.
