Calgary Flames at Vancouver Canucks odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s Calgary Flames at Vancouver Canucks odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”4141″ ]

The Calgary Flames meet the Vancouver Canucks Wednesday in the 2024-25 season opener at Rogers Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 10 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s NHL odds around the Flames vs. Canucks odds and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

Season series: First meeting; Canucks won season series 3-1 in 2023-24

The Flames didn’t make a lot of noise in the offseason after missing the playoffs. Calgary amassed just 81 points, and it ended up trading G Jacob Markstrom to the New Jersey Devils, electing to go with a rebuild. It will use a combination of Gs Dan Vladar and Dustin Wolf.

The Canucks made a splash in the free-agent market, bringing in F Jake DeBrusk, formerly of the Boston Bruins, while adding blueline help with Ds Vincent Desharnais and Derek Forbert.

G Thatcher Demko is still not ready to return from a knee injury quite yet, but the Canucks should be in capable hands with playoff hero Arturs Silovs holding down the fort.

Flames at Canucks projected goalies

Dustin Wolf (7-7-1, 3.16 GAA, .893 SV% in 2023-24) vs. Arturs Silovs (3-0-1, 2.47 GAA, .881 SV% in 2023-24)

Wolf won his final 4 starts down the stretch last season, although he was helped out by the fact the offense averaged 5.7 goals per game in his final 3 outings. Still, it was impressive nonetheless. Wolf has never faced the Canucks.

Silovs stepped in during the postseason with injuries to both Demko and Casey DeSmith. Now, Silovs gets a chance to start the season atop the depth chart, with journeyman Kevin Lankinen as his backup.

Flames at Canucks picks and predictions

Prediction

Canucks 4, Flames 2

Moneyline

The Canucks (-210) will cost you more than 2 times your potential return, and that’s way too risky for not much reward. That’s a poor betting strategy anytime, but especially in the opening game when we just don’t have a lot of information on either side just yet.

PASS, and look to the puck line instead, or consider a 3-way ML play with CANUCKS (-130) for a regular time win.

Puck line/Against the spread

The CANUCKS -1.5 (+120) are a solid value on the puck line at plus-money.

Last season, Vancouver covered both home games on the puck line against the Flames +1.5 (-145), outscoring Calgary 8-3. While 5 of the past 8 meetings in this series have been decided by a single goal, the distance between these 2 teams in terms of talent has grown significantly in the past year.

Over/Under

The total 6 is likely to come down right on the number. We saw an Under total in the most recent game April 16, and a push on a total of 6 goals on March 23 in Vancouver.

In the past 5 meetings, these 2 teams have combined to average exactly 6.0 goals per game, too.

AVOID.

Vancouver Canucks at Calgary Flames odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Wednesday’s Vancouver Canucks at Calgary Flames odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Vancouver Canucks (23-28-4) and Calgary Flames (25-27-3) wrap up the regular season Wednesday at Scotiabank Saddledome. Puck drop is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze the Canucks-Flames odds and lines, with NHL picks and predictions.

The Canucks doubled up the Flames by a 4-2 count in Vancouver Tuesday, winning their home finale. RW Brock Boeser, D Travis Hamonic and D Tyler Myers led the way with a goal and an assist each.

The Flames lost behind backup journeyman G Louis Domingue, who gave former Canucks G Jacob Markstrom a breather. Markstrom is set to wrap up the season in between the pipes.

  • Money line: Canucks +125 (bet $100 to win $125) | Flames -155 (bet $155 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Canucks +1.5 (-190) | Flames -1.5 (+155)
  • Over/Under: 6 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Canucks at Flames: Projected starting goalies

Braden Holtby (7-10-3, 3.55 GAA, .894 SV%) vs. Jacob Markstrom (21-19-2, 2.67 GAA, .904 SV%, 3 SO)

Holtby has stumbled down the stretch, allowing four or more goals in each of his past four outings, while losing five consecutive starts. His most recent outing was a 6-5 overtime loss to the Flames Sunday when he stopped just 30 of 36 shots.

Markstrom has dominated his former employer this season, going 6-2-0 against the Canucks with a 2.43 GAA, a .927 SV% and one of his three shutouts.

Canucks at Flames: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Flames 4, Canucks 2

Money line (ML)

The FLAMES (-155) are the play as they look to close the season on a high note and bounce back from Tuesday’s loss. Domingue’s start in that defeat was a bummer, but Calgary should be able to rebound and finish up strong.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The FLAMES -1.5 (+155) are worth a small-unit play behind Markstrom. He has just been super tough on the Canucks this season, and five of their past six wins have been by two or more goals. So, if you like Calgary here, definitely back them on the puck line.

Over/Under (O/U)

O/U (O: -110 | U: -110) screams stay away, as I expect the total to land right on the number. That’s what happened in a 4-2 Vancouver win Tuesday. I think Calgary returns the favor here. If anything, a small wager on the alternate line of OVER 5.5 (-140) is the way to go again.

AVOID.

Calgary Flames at Vancouver Canucks odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Tuesday’s Calgary Flames at Vancouver Canucks odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Calgary Flames (25-26-3) play the third game of a four-game set against the Vancouver Canucks (22-28-4) in a regular-season tilt Tuesday. Puck drop is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET at Rogers Arena. Below, we analyze the Flames-Canucks odds and lines, with NHL picks and predictions.

The Flames won for the third straight outings, edging the Canucks 6-5 in overtime behind former Vancouver backstop Jacob Markstrom. The Flames have won six of the first eight meetings this season against the Canucks.

The Canucks have been rather erratic in their make-up games. They were able to top the playoff-bound Edmonton Oilers in their barn, winning 4-1 on Saturday. But that’s their only win in the previous four. The Under has cashed in four of their past five.

  • Against the spread/ATS: Flames -1.5 (+185) | Canucks +1.5 (-225)
  • Over/Under: 6 (O: +100 | U: -120)

Flames at Canucks: Projected starting goalies

Jacob Markstrom (21-19-2, 2.67 GAA, .904 SV%, 3 SO) vs. Thatcher Demko (15-18-1, 2.87 GAA, .914 SV%, 1 SO)

Markstrom has won three straight starts, including back-to-back outings against his former employer, the Vancouver Canucks. He is 6-2-0 with a 2.43 GAA and .927 SV% with one of his three shutouts against the Canucks.

Demko has alternated wins and losses in each of his past six starts, winning last time out in Edmonton Saturday. He hasn’t fared well against the Flames, going just 1-3-1 with a 3.28 GAA and .878 SV% in five starts.

Flames at Canucks: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Flames 4, Canucks 2

Money line (ML)

The FLAMES (-135) have really had the number of the Canucks (+110), especially when Markstrom is patrolling the crease against his old team. Calgary has looked very good, even though these games are rather meaningless. Vancouver, on the other hand, has appeared to be rather disinterested.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The FLAMES -1.5 (+185) are worth a roll of the dice on the puck line, although go lightly. Both of these sides are headed nowhere, so you never know the interest level you’re going to get. However, with Markstrom facing the Canucks, he has made a point to work even harder than usual to show them what they’re missing for letting him walk last offseason.

Over/Under (O/U)

Total 6 (O: +100, U: -120) is rather risky, as I think the total lands exactly on the number. If there is a slight lean, I’d actually go OVER 5.5 (-130) on the alternate line. I don’t think these teams combine for anywhere near the 11 goals they posted last time, but we won’t get a goaltender duel, either.

Previewing Sunday’s Calgary Flames at Vancouver Canucks odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Calgary Flames (24-26-3) travel to meet the Vancouver Canucks (22-28-3) in a regular-season tilt Sunday. Puck drop is scheduled for 10:30 p.m. ET at Rogers Arena. Below, we analyze the Flames-Canucks odds and lines, with NHL picks and predictions.

The Flames might not be headed for the playoffs, but they’re finishing up strong. They have posted back-to-back wins as moderate favorites, outscoring the Ottawa Senators and Canucks by a 10-2 count in the past two games.

The Canucks bounced back from a 4-1 loss in Calgary Thursday with a 4-1 win at the Edmonton Oilers Saturday. Vancouver has won a respectable three of the past six outings.

  • Against the spread/ATS: Flames -1.5 (+195) | Canucks +1.5 (-250)
  • Over/Under: 5.5 (O: -115 | U: -105)

Flames at Canucks: Projected starting goalies

Jacob Markstrom (20-19-2, 2.62 GAA, .906 SV%, 3 SO) vs. Braden Holtby (7-10-2, 3.43 GAA, .897 SV%)

Markstrom has won back-to-back games, including a Thursday’s 4-1 victory against his former team, the Canucks. He is 5-2-0 with a 2.07 GAA and .938 SV% with a shutout in seven starts against Vancouver this season.

Holtby has dropped four consecutive starts, allowing four or more goals in each of his past three outings. The 31-year-old Saskatchewan native is 1-1-0 with a 2.00 GAA and .944 SV% in two starts against the Flames this season.

Flames at Canucks: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Flames 3, Canucks 1

Money line (ML)

The FLAMES (-135) are a strong play behind Markstrom, as he has really taken out a lot of aggression on his former employer. The Canucks are playing in the second end of a back-to-back, too, and they’re just 16-37 in the past 53 when playing on no rest.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The FLAMES -1.5 (+195) are a tempting play as you can nearly double up if they win by two or more goals. In five victories against the Canucks this season, the Flames have won four by two or more goals.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 5.5 (-105) is the lean here. The Under is 5-1 in Calgary’s past six games overall and 18-7-2 in the past 27 on the road. For Vancouver, the Under is 9-3-2 in its past 14 at home, while hitting in each of the past four. The Under is also 3-1-1 in the past five meetings in this head-to-head series.

Previewing Thursday’s Calgary Flames at Vancouver Canucks NHL odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Calgary Flames (6-5-1) visit the Vancouver Canucks (6-10-0) in a Thursday night game at Rogers Arena with the puck dropping shortly after 10 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze the Flames-Canucks NHL odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

  • Against the spread/ATS: Flames -1.5 (+185) | Canucks +1.5 (-225)
  • Over/Under: 6 (O: -115 | U: -105)

Flames at Canucks: Projected starting goalies

Jacob Markstrom (6-3-1, .916 SV%, 2.50 GAA) vs. Braden Holtby (3-5-0, .885 SV%, 3.75 GAA)

Markstrom is coming off a solid Tuesday effort against the Winnipeg Jets with 25 saves on 27 shots. Two of the veteran netminder’s better starts this season came against these Canucks: he stopped 57 of 59 shots in home starts Jan. 16 and 18 against his former club.

Holtby has lost three straight starts, posting an .844 SV% in the process. The 11-year veteran is the last line of defense behind a Vancouver team allowing a league-high 34.7 shots per game. Holtby has carded a mere .889 SV% in even-strength play. He’s behind an average penalty-killing group, and the Canucks’ average penalty time of 12:18 minutes per game is the highest in the league.

Flames at Canucks: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Flames 4, Canucks 2

Money line (ML)

The Canucks have yielded 5.2 goals per game in losing five in a row. Expected-goals figures back up Vancouver’s shaky win-loss record.

Calgary’s puck-possession numbers are impressive with a 53.5% Corsi For over its last 10 games, and the visitors figure to have the edge between the pipes.

TAKE THE FLAMES (-145).

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The Calgary-by-2 lean isn’t particularly strong, but the price here gives this play leverage. A Flames power play trending the right way (25% last seven games) against a penalty-prone Vancouver squad helps push the puck-line play into profit territory. BACK THE FLAMES -1.5 (+185).

Over/Under (O/U)

PASS. Keep an eye on the price. The Over would be a slight lean with an even-money tag (-110).
