New Fire Emblem Engage DLC adds an alternate timeline and new class

The fourth wave of Fire Emblem Engage DLC is coming up fast, with an alternate timeline story and a chance to join the other side

The fourth wave of Fire Emblem Engage DLC is coming up fast, with an alternate timeline story and a chance to join the other side. The DLC is Fell Xenologue, and it launches on April 4, 2023, for Nintendo Switch.

Fell Xenologue takes place outside the main story in a world where the Divine Dragon (that’s you) dies. Somehow, Alear comes back and joins with two new characters, Nel and Nil, on a quest to recover yet more Emblem items. This time, you’re after Emblem Bracelets, several of which seem to be missing.

Your allies are at war with each other and, quite literally, themselves. The Firenese fight the Brodians, and heroes like Celine and Fogado apparently face off against mirror versions of themselves at some point. Why this is happening and what your goal is – and, equally as important, what role Nel and Nil play – Nintendo didn’t say.

There’s also a new class, though Nintendo is remaining coy about that as well. Whether it’s a brand-new class or a returning one from Three Houses, such as the Grappler or Dark Mage, remains uncertain.

The fourth DLC wave is free to all who own the expansion pass. The previous waves of DLC added new Emblems, including Three Houses’ trio of heroes, and helpful items to boost your army’s stats.

Fire Emblem Engage voice actor couldn’t buy the game they starred in

Brandon McInnis, who voices the male lead in Fire Emblem Engage, couldn’t get the deluxe edition after GameStop failed to honor pre-orders

Brandon McInnis, who voices the male protagonist Alear in Fire Emblem Engage, couldn’t get the game’s deluxe edition after GameStop failed to honor pre-orders. McInnis posted about his frustrations on Twitter, where he said the problem stemmed from the company selling too many pre-orders, despite knowing they wouldn’t have the stock to fill each one.

McInnis said GameStop originally delayed the order and then called to say they simply wouldn’t be filling it. He managed to get a Divine Edition from a reseller on eBay, though.

“It irks me that people gave money to GameStop believing they’d get a copy of something special to them and were duped,” McInnis said on Twitter. “Just wanna let y’all know to save y’all some grief when a game that’s really important to you drops in the future!”

The pre-order situation is something other GameStop shoppers and even employees said they sympathized with all too easily. One commenter said she used to work at the store and was surprised that, 10 years later, they were still required to sell pre-orders when they knew they wouldn’t be able to fill them.

Another said that when they worked at the retail chain in 2006, it was a constant struggle to convince management that reserved copies should actually stay reserved and not sold to whoever walked in the door.

In June 2022, an entire staff roster at a store in Lincoln, Nebraska, quit and posted a notice on the store door encouraging people to shop elsewhere. The former employees cited unreasonable sales quotas – including pre-orders – as one of the main reasons.

Nintendo announced Three Houses-themed Fire Emblem Engage DLC

Fire Emblem Engage DLC is coming, with the first wave launching with the game and including Three Houses characters

Nintendo announced Fire Emblem Engage DLC during The Game Awards 2022, with the first of four waves launching with the game on Jan. 20, 2023. Engage’s first round of DLC will feature Engage heroes from Fire Emblem Three Houses, namely the RPG’s three lords: Edelgard, Dimitri, and Claude.

The first wave of DLC will also include Tiki, the ancient Manakete dragon from the original Fire Emblem who’s since gone on to appear in later games, including the Nintendo 3DS series reboot Fire Emblem Awakening.

Hero Emblems in Engage grant certain characters powers from another world, augmenting their attacks and generally aiding in battle against the strategy game’s tougher foes. The base game already includes heroes such as Ike from Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, Marth from the original game, and Lyn from Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade, among others.

The DLC will also add accessories, a Silver Card, and new maps, and while the announcement trailer didn’t mention what those maps may be, it seems safe to assume they’ll hail from the new characters’ original games.

The other three waves of DLC don’t have a release timeframe yet, nor did Nintendo say which characters they’ll bring into the fray. No price for the paid DLC came up either.

Fire Emblem Engage launches for Nintendo Switch on Jan. 20, 2023.

New Fire Emblem Engage trailer highlights heroes of the past

The latest Fire Emblem Engage trailer delves into a battle for the ages, literally, as armies fight for control of ancient heroes

Nintendo released a new Fire Emblem Engage trailer, this time highlighting the RPG game’s story, which seems potentially more involved than the “everybody’s here” nature of the first trailer led some to believe. You play as Alear, a divine dragon popularly called “Toothpaste-chan” by fans, on account of the protagonist’s red and blue hair, on a mission to seal an ancient evil, but in typical Fire Emblem fashion, you don’t set out alone.

Alear picks up a number of friends and allies on their way, traveling across the world to far-flung territories in a bid to gather ancient rings containing the essence of heroes from other worlds. These other worlds are games from Fire Emblem’s past, with heroes including Lyn, Marth, and Celica offering their aid, and potentially other classic protagonists such as Leif and Sigurd.

This assistance isn’t guaranteed, though. The trailer showed a dark version of Marth and even of Alear, both born from the rings falling into the wrong hands.

What these wrong hands intend by awakening Engage’s fell dragon remains uncertain, though it seems this new Fire Emblem might have a more straightforward narrative – good versus evil, small kingdoms facing down mighty empires, the kind of story classic Fire Emblem games usually told – as opposed to Three Houses’ more complex tale of clashing beliefs.

Whatever the case, we don’t have much longer to wait before finding out. Fire Emblem Engage launches for Nintendo Switch. Jan. 20, 2023.
