Pete Carroll calls Russell Wilson’s speedy return a ‘great achievement’

After being cleared to play, Pete Carroll calls Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson’s speedy return from surgery a “great achievement.”

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson is back in action and expected to play Sunday afternoon against the Green Bay Packers. Wilson was designated to return to practice on Monday and medically cleared for full participation.

“Yeah, this is a remarkable story of recovery,” coach Pete Carroll told reporters on Monday. “The guy set his intent that he was going to do this and pull it off and he is way, way ahead of schedule. We just came off of the practice field and he was throwing the ball all over the place. He did really well for his first time out in a limited number of plays.”

Wilson had sustained a finger injury during the Thursday-night loss to the Rams and immediately underwent surgery. His own doctor couldn’t believe how quickly he was able to recover. Carroll is just as amazed.

“We knew that Russ was going to go for it, but we didn’t know if his body would respond, but it did,” Carroll continued. “His team helped him throughout and did a remarkable job. We will go one day at a time and see how it goes. I know that he is thrilled to be back, and everybody is excited to see him back out here, so it’s an amazing accomplishment to be back throwing like he just did on the practice field.

“It’s a great achievement.”

Seahawks QB Russell Wilson will prepare for gameday as if he’s playing

Even though he’s out for the foreseeable future, Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson will mentally prepare for gameday as if he’s playing.

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson is just beginning the recovery process following finger surgery and he is already back with the team . . . well, sort of. Wilson watched from the sidelines to cheer on his teammates.

“He had 30 minutes on the practice field, and he was great,” coach Pete Carroll said Monday afternoon. “He knows his job is to help Geno (Smith) and get him ready.”

Carroll told reporters the timeline for Wilson’s return is still uncertain, and until then, the quarterback is going to participate however possible, even if that only includes metal reps.

“He’s already starting to listen to the game plan,” Carroll explained. “He’s figuring out where it fits and how it’s going to go. He’s going to prepare just like he was playing.

“His plan is to stay as sharp and as fresh as he possibly can.”
