Ezekiel Elliott, Dak Prescott fined $13K apiece for latest red kettle celebration

Elliott said he tried to top the tight ends’ Whac-A-Mole stunt from the previous game, then spent the week spotlighting the Salvation Army. | From @ToddBrock24f7

For the second week in a row, multiple Cowboys players have drawn monetary fines from the league for using AT&T Stadium’s Salvation Army kettle as a touchdown celebration prop.

Running back Ezekiel Elliott and quarterback Dak Prescott were hit this time, for their stunt during last Sunday’s fourth-quarter explosion of points against Indianapolis.

The NFL fined both players $13,261 for unsportsmanlike conduct, just a week after the Cowboys’ four tight ends were fined a grand total of $27,094 for playing Whac-A-Mole in the signature kettle after a touchdown on Thanksgiving Day.

In the Week 13 win, Elliott scored on a four-yard end-zone plunge and proceeded to race to the kettle, motioning for Prescott to follow him. Elliott jumped into the kettle and hid as Prescott stood outside and cranked an imaginary handle. Then Elliott rose up like a jack-in-the-box and performed his customary “Feed Me” pantomime.

The celebration- like the tight ends’ Whac-A-Mole game previously- failed to draw a penalty flag during the game.

“I just had to come up with something to try to top the guys from last week,” Elliott told reporters following the 54-19 win. “I don’t know if we did. It’s kind of hard to beat the Whac-A-Mole.”

But Elliott continued to call attention to the charity over the next few days. The two-time rushing champ visited a Salvation Army warehouse on Wednesday to see the holiday gift-giving operation in action and presented a $50,000 check to help out.

The seventh-year veteran also took to Twitter, asking his followers to give by making their own $21 donations to match his jersey number.

“This is phenomenal,” a spokesperson said of Elliott’s contributions and celebrations, which started in his rookie season. “When he jumps into the kettle, people write us checks. It’s unbelievable. I don’t think he could have imagined in 2016 the ripple effect of this.”

Elliott explained that whether it’s through giving his own time on days off, encouraging fans to chip in themselves, using the recognizable red kettle during games to spotlight the organization’s holiday presence… or getting fined by the league for doing so, he’s happy to make the Salvation Army the star of the season.

“Definitely,” he said this week. “The things that The Salvation Army does around this community can’t be matched. Anytime we can bring awareness, anytime we can help them out, it means a lot.”

2 Broncos players were fined for penalties in Week 12

Broncos DB Delarrin Turner-Yell ($4,379) and DL Mike Purcell ($11,139) were fined for penalties against the Panthers last week.

Two Denver Broncos defenders have been fined by the NFL for penalties committed during a 23-10 loss to the Carolina Panthers in Week 12.

Broncos rookie safety Delarrin Turner-Yell was fined $4,379 for a facemask penalty, according to a report from KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis. Turner-Yell did not record any defensive stats in the game, but he did recover a fumbled punt on special teams.

Elsewhere on defense, Denver nose tackle Mike Purcell was fined $11,139 for an unnecessary roughness penalty, according to Klis. Shortly after that penalty, Purcell was spotted yelling at Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson on the sideline. Purcell finished the game with two tackles.

Penalties have become an alarming trend for Denver. Through 11 games this season, the Broncos have been penalized an NFL-high 96 times for 740 yards lost, which is also a league-high total.

Denver coach Nathaniel Hackett is leading an undisciplined squad that has been frequently penalized by officials and hit in their wallets by the NFL this season.

Cowboys tight ends fined for Thanksgiving Whac-A-Mole celebration

All 4 tight ends were fined for using a Salvation Army kettle as a prop; Dak Prescott and Jerry Jones have hinted the fines will be covered. | From @ToddBrock24f7

Jake Ferguson and the Cowboys tight ends figured they might hear from the league regarding their Whac-A-Mole touchdown celebration against the Giants on Thanksgiving Day.

As expected, the bill has arrived.

All four players involved in the stunt- Ferguson, Dalton Schultz, Sean McKeon, and Peyton Hendershot- were fined by the league for unsportsmanlike conduct, as first reported by NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. The celebration did not draw a flag during the Week 12 game.

Veteran Dalton Schultz took the biggest financial hit: $13,261. McKeon was fined $4,994; Ferguson, who told reporters he came up with the idea, was fined $4,895; and Hendershot, who scored the touchdown and wielded the football like a mallet in the celebration that took place just beyond the end zone, will be docked $3,944.

But if quarterback Dak Prescott can be taken at his word, the money won’t be coming out of the tight ends’ pockets.

Prescott explained in his press conference after the 28-20 win that he told Ferguson, “We have a couple of guys that can help with the fines, so go for it.”

As ProFootballTalk points out, it is technically a violation of NFL rules for one player to cover a monetary fine levied against another, but there is no mechanism in place to know where the money actually comes from to pay such a fine.

Some of the past Cowboys celebrations that have been set in the trademark kettle have also resulted in fines. Those fines were generally met with matching donations to the Salvation Army from Cowboys players, as well as a noticeable uptick in donations from charitable Cowboys fans.

The Cowboys are a longtime partner of The Salvation Army; team owner Jerry Jones has also said he would cover fines incurred for using the oversized kettle as a prop.

Speaking on Thanksgiving to WFAA-TV, Jones said, “I’d love to have that little tit-for-tat with the NFL and be defending that red kettle on the field as they were giving me some punishment. I’ll take that argument.”

There’s now a $27,094 bill for Cowboys players and ownership to argue over.

2 Broncos players fined for unnecessary roughness vs. Raiders in Week 11

Broncos WR Courtland Sutton and DB Justin Simmons were both fined $15,914 for offenses against the Raiders last week.

First the loss, now the fines.

Last week’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders has left a bitter taste in the mouth of Denver Broncos players, and two of them were hit in the wallet to boot.

Broncos wide receiver Courtland Sutton was fined $15,914 after his blindside block against the Raiders was penalized for unnecessary roughness in Week 11, according to a report from KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis.

Denver safety Justin Simmons was also fined Justin Simmons $15,914 for unnecessary roughness, according to Klis, but his offense was not penalized on Sunday.

Simmons and Sutton are repeat offenders in the NFL’s fine bookkeeping this season. Sutton was fined $10,609 for an unnecessary roughness penalty in Week 2 and Simmons was fined $10,609 for unsportsmanlike conduct in Week 8.

Meanwhile, Raiders wide receiver Davante Adams was fined $29,785 for unsportsmanlike conduct after his arguing with an official cost his team a 15-yard penalty against the Broncos.

Simmons and Sutton — and all of Denver’s players — will aim to avoid additional penalties and fines when the Broncos face the Carolina Panthers in Week 12.

Andre Cisco fined for unpenalized hit on Chiefs WR JuJu Smith-Schuster

Andre Cisco’s hit on JuJu Smith-Schuster didn’t draw a penalty last week, but it reportedly earned him a fine anyway.

Jacksonville Jaguars safety Andre Cisco received a $6,612 fine for his massive hit on Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster in Week 10, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

Cisco’s hit on the Chiefs receiver jarred the ball loose on a third down and ended a Kansas City drive. It also resulted in a concussion for Smith-Schuster, who has been ruled out of the Chiefs’ Week 11 game against the Los Angeles Chargers. It did not result in a penalty, though.

A hit on a defenseless player is supposed to result in a $15,914 fine on first offenses and illegal use of the helmet is due to cost a player $21,218. However, Appendix U of the collective bargaining agreement between the NFL and NFLPA says that a player cannot be fined more than 10 percent of their salary cap hit for a game on a first offense.

Given Cisco is counting just $1.19 million against the Jaguars’ salary cap this season, his cap count per week (the yearly total split 18 times) is $66,117. Thus, the maximum for his first offense is $6,612.

While it’s a relatively small amount for an NFL fine, it’s an admission from the league that it believes officials should’ve flagged the play.

Cisco, 22, had the best game of his young NFL career against the Chiefs, finishing with an interception and the top grade on the team from Pro Football Focus. After his collision with Smith-Schuster ended one Kansas City drive, Cisco delivered another huge hit on third down on the subsequent drive to force an incomplete pass, but a defensive holding penalty on Tre Herndon extended the drive.

The Jaguars selected Cisco in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft and he’s in the second season of a four-year, $5.24 million rookie contract.

Cowboys Micah Parsons, Trevon Diggs fined for unsportsmanlike conduct penalties vs Eagles

Parsons was docked $10K for taunting Eagles TE Dallas Goedert after a pass breakup. Diggs will pay $9K for removing his helmet on the field. | From @ToddBrock24f7

A couple Cowboys players lost their cool for a moment during last Sunday night’s tough loss to the Eagles.

Now they’ll be losing a decent chunk of change, too.

NFL insider Ian Rapoport tweeted Saturday that linebacker Micah Parsons was fined $10,609 by the league for the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty he incurred in the third quarter. After breaking up (and almost intercepting) a Jalen Hurts pass, Parsons celebrated with a flex and had a few words for Eagles tight end Dallas Goedert. He was flagged for taunting.

In the moment, the penalty cost the Cowboys 15 yards and gave Philadelphia a new set of downs instead of bringing up 3rd-and-10 in their own territory.

“It’s just passion of the game,” Parsons said of the episode. “We play a game with passion, play it with heart. Sometimes you might overdo it.”

Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs is also a bit lighter in the wallet for losing his temper late in the same game. He took off his helmet while still on the field and slammed it to the turf following Philadelphia’s fourth-quarter touchdown, a score that put Dallas down by two scores with seven minutes to play. He also drew an unsportsmanlike conduct foul.

At the time, the penalty only moved the ball a yard closer to the end zone for the Eagles’ two-point conversion try. But the league has levied a monetary fine of $9,577 against Diggs for the outburst.

Dallas was the most-penalized team in the NFL last season. They have had 51 flags thrown against them thus far in 2022 and had 42 of those penalties count against them. Both of those totals are currently fifth-most leaguewide.

The Golden State Warriors decided to fine, not suspend, superstar Draymond Green after video leaked of him punching teammate Jordan Poole. Although a specific amount has not been revealed publicly, it was likely enough for Green to surpass a substantial and unwanted milestone. Prior to his latest infraction, Green had tallied $994,124 in total fines over the course of his NBA career, according to Spotrac. And assuming the Warriors fined him more than $5,876 for the punch, Green has now eclipsed the $1 million mark in total fines.

It would be easy to dismiss Edwards’ immaturity—he’s only 21—if not for the fact that we’ve seen so many cases of famous athletes and owners in the news spouting racism, misogyny, and anti-LGBTQ+ sentiments. This damages sports in general and their teams specifically, and revives the old stereotype of the dumb, bullying jock. But more important, it perpetuates prejudice against a group and that prejudice often leads to restricting rights and to violence. I don’t think an apology—however heartfelt—is enough. Edwards needs to repair the damage with some voluntary community service with LGBTQ+ organizations, particularly youth groups, to show his support. If he can’t do that much to undo the harm he’s caused, then his apology is meaningless. -via Substack / September 19, 2022
While waiting for a flight last weekend, Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve opened Twitter and saw Anthony Edwards’ name trending. She clicked to see why. Reeve looked at the viral snippet in which the Timberwolves guard made homophobic comments in his Instagram video as he observed a group of men on a nearby sidewalk. The video reminded Reeve of a darker time in her life, of the years she was closeted and did not want to live her life openly out of fear she would hear hurtful language like Edwards used. -via Minneapolis Star-Tribune / September 16, 2022
“My journey was one of a more closeted nature for fear of retribution, and things being held against you, of not feeling safe, and so that’s honestly what I thought of,” Reeve told the Star Tribune from Australia, where she is coaching the U.S. Women’s National Team. “How much an incident like that can be so destructive in progress that we’ve made during the course of my lifetime. Frankly, it’s irresponsible and it puts people in danger. … We often live in fear.” -via Minneapolis Star-Tribune / September 16, 2022

3 Broncos players fined by NFL after Week 1

Broncos safety Kareem Jackson was fined for not having his knees covered and he’s certainly not happy about it.

[sendtonews_embed video_id=”MCDAPziDE4-2238586-7498″]

Three Denver Broncos players were fined by the NFL after the team’s 17-16 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in Week 1.

Broncos outside linebacker Jonathon Cooper was fined $4,723 for taunting, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. Cooper was penalized in the second quarter after he stood over a Seahawks running back following a tackle.

On the other side of the ball, Denver running back Javonte Williams was fined $11,194 for an unnecessary roughness penalty.

Broncos safety Kareem Jackson wasn’t fined for any penalties, but the league did fine him for not having his knees covered in Week 1.

Jackson made it clear on Twitter that he’s not happy about the fine.

Jackson then joked that the NFL wants players to wear pants like this on game day:

In total, the three players were fined more than $20,000 combined.

The league uses money from current player fines to help fund programs that assist former players who are no longer in the NFL.
