The 10 best Final Fantasy games, according to fans

Square Enix reveals which Final Fantasy titles are the most beloved.

Final Fantasy’s 35th anniversary extravaganza went down over the weekend, revealing what fan-favorite entries in the series are.

Before the event, Square Enix put up a Japanese poll asking fans to rank every mainline Final Fantasy from worst to best – then revealed the results during a 35th anniversary livestream (thanks, Resetera).

The 10 best Final Fantasy games, according to fan votes

  1. Final Fantasy XIV Online
  2. Final Fantasy VII
  3. Final Fantasy X
  4. Final Fantasy VI
  5. Final Fantasy IX
  6. Final Fantasy V
  7. Final Fantasy VIII
  8. Final Fantasy IV
  9. Final Fantasy XI Online
  10. Final Fantasy XV

Remember that there are 15 core entries in the Final Fantasy series thus far, so making it on this list is quite a feat. Pixel remasters of Final Fantasy 4, Final Fantasy 6, and more are heading to Nintendo Switch and PS4 in the spring of next year, for those of you who missed out on those classics.

No real surprise Final Fantasy 14 took top honors, given its staggering popularity. The MMORPG also won “Best Ongoing Game” at the 2022 Game Awards – a category it won in 2021 as well.

Obviously, this poll didn’t include Final Fantasy 16 since it isn’t out yet – though the summer 2023 launch date isn’t too far off. Square Enix is already taking pre-orders for Final Fantasy 16‘s expensive collector’s edition, which costs more than an Xbox Series S! In fairness, it does look incredibly cool.

Final Fantasy 14’s most popular villain will appear in NieR Reincarnation

Natsuko Ishikawa will be writing the collaboration’s script.

If there’s one way to get a Final Fantasy 14 fan’s full attention, it’s by uttering the name ‘Emet-Selch’ aloud. Go ahead, try it for yourself — nobody can oversell how magnificent this character is. Square Enix wouldn’t be stuffing him into another collaboration otherwise.

As Fanbyte reports, the Final Fantasy 14 collaboration with NieR Reincarnation begins May 10, 2022. What’s particularly interesting is that this crossover is Shadowbringers-themed. Appropriate, given it’s objectively the best Final Fantasy 14 expansion. I’m only teasing, of course. Endwalker is brilliant too

Several Final Fantasy 14 jobs, including the dragoon, white mage, and dark knight, will be playable in NieR Reincarnation soon. There’s also Amaurot, the climatic dungeon that comes near Shadowbringer‘s finale. Best of all, the living legend that is Natsuko Ishikawa is on writing duty here, and she’s incorporating Emet-Selch into the story. Check out the trailer below to see what all the fuss is.

That’s Emet-Selch right at the end, back turned towards the camera like a boss. Seriously, real ones understand why.

This crossover isn’t as grandiose as the YoRHa: Dark Apocalypse raid Final Fantasy 14 had a while back, but more NieR collaborations are always welcome.

Final Fantasy 14: Endwalker has a higher user score than any game on Metacritic in 2021

Stand tall.

There might be no better indicator that Final Fantasy 14: Endwalker  is a hit than it being Metacritic’s best-reviewed game in 2021 by users.

First spotted by Forbes, the latest expansion for Square Enix’s wildly popular MMORPG is gathering wild praise from users over on reviews-aggregate Metacritic. As of Monday, Final Fantasy 14: Endwalker  is sitting at 9.4/10 based on more than 300 user scores.

For comparison, here are the Metacritic user scores for other heavy hitters in 2021:

  • Deathloop – 6.3
  • Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart – 8.5
  • It Takes Two – 8.9
  • Halo Infinite – 8.5
  • Battlefield 2042 – 2.2

That metric is particularly impressive considering the  persistent congestion issues plaguing the expansion. Typically, when a game has a rough launch, users will take to platforms like Metacritic and its page with scaling reviews. Somehow, though, Final Fantasy 14: Endwalker is in the community’s good graces.

Final Fantasy 14 also won Best Community Support and Best Ongoing at  The Game Awards last week. Check out the team’s acceptance speech for yourself below.

Square Enix is giving players free subscription time to  make up for the server situation. There’s no word on how much free time they’ll give out, but knowing the Final Fantasy 14 development team will be a significant chunk.

There’s only a tiny handful of professional reviews up for Final Fantasy 14: Endwalker as of Monday, primarily because it’s very long and the server queues can make logging in borderline impossible at times. ForTheWin will have an official review for the expansion in the coming days, though!

Final Fantasy 14’s error 2002 means an entire town of people are in front of you

The line is very long indeed.

Naoki Yoshida, director and producer of Final Fantasy 14, took some time to explain what error 2002 means and why it’s so prevalent during Endwalker’s  launch.

Final Fantasy 14: Endwalker’s  release has not been a smooth one. Despite the development team  warning players ahead of time about congestion issues, the situation is worse than anyone predicted. The now-infamous error 2002 is regularly kicking fans out of server queues during the login process, which is a problem considering peak hours means thousands of players are ahead of you. In a  Tuesday blog post, Yoshida revealed what error 2002 means.

“In order to prevent a major login server outage, [Final Fantasy 14] has a limit of “no more than 17,000 total players waiting to log in per logical data center,” Yoshida said. “If the total number of players waiting in the logical data center exceeds 17,000, Error 2002 will be displayed and you will not be able to queue up for login.”

It’s a staggering number. Over the past several days, error 2002 has booted me from the server queue several times. Little did I know that more people than the enter population of my hometown were ahead of me in line. Go figure. Thankfully, Square Enix is  giving players free subscription time  to make up for this situation.

Yoshida went on to state that the development team is implementing backup servers to help resolve the issue, which will raise the maximum number of players in the queue to around 21,000. That change will happen on Dec. 7 as Final Fantasy 14: Endwalker  exits early access.

Final Fantasy 14 servers might face ‘congestion’ issues during Endwalker’s launch

Square Enix expects heavy server loads during early access.

Endwalker, the latest expansion for Final Fantasy 14, will probably stress its servers like never before.

Early access for Endwalker  begins Dec. 3 and Square Enix is warning fans ahead of time that servers might buckle a bit under the demand. It happens every expansion launch but given the dramatic increase in new players, especially over the summerEndwalker’s  release might be shakier than HeavenswardStormblood  or even Shadowbringers  were.

In a new blog post on Final Fantasy 14’s  website, the development team chose to address the impending server issues head-on.

“As such, there is a high likelihood of congestion that will result in [servers] reaching maximum login capacity and lengthy wait times when logging in,” Square Enix said. “We would like to apologize for making this sort of announcement at a time when many of you are looking forward to the expansion, as well as for inconveniences that may be caused by congestion.”

The post also mentions Square Enix’s efforts to combat these issues, including updating server infrastructure and raising simultaneous login limits. However, the team also stresses that they could not add new servers to Final Fantasy 14  in time for Endwalker’s  release due to the ongoing global semiconductor shortage. A problem  NintendoSony  and  Valve  are experiencing with hardware as well.

There’s probably not a single Final Fantasy 14  fan that won’t run into issues during Endwalker’s  release. That’s right —  not even Doja Cat.

The most hyped video games that were underwhelming

These didn’t turn out as good as we had been promised.

Honest trailers can be difficult to pull off. After all, developers want to retain an element of surprise when people actually get their hands on the game. Things often appear out of context and disjointed, and nobody really knows how a game feels until they get their thumbs on the sticks.

Still, it’s easy to be sucked in by the hype when you’re looking forward to a new game. Those flashy trailers do their job, sometimes too well, to the point where player expectation is, frankly, unrealistic. And that’s where this list comes into play – let’s hobble down memory lane and take a look back at the games that didn’t meet our high hopes, dashing our dreams like a skull-cracking on concrete.
