2022 Fighting Irish Invitational: Tennessee rugby 7s results

The Fighting Irish 7s Invitational took place March 26 at Stinson Rugby Field in Notre Dame, Indiana.

Tennessee competed in 7s competition.

The Vols traveled with only nine players and competed in 29-degree snow conditions.

Tennessee defeated Miami University, 24-0, kicking off at 9:22 a.m. EDT. The Vols lost its second match, 29-0, to Marian. Michigan State defeated Tennessee, 17-0, in game No. 3, while Wheeling was victorious against the Vols, 20-5.

Following the Fighting Irish 7s Invitational, Tennessee junior fullback Josh Shetler discussed the Vols’ performance.

“Super disappointing weekend of our first 7s games since 2019,” Shetler told Vols Wire. “We traveled with nine players due to injuries across the whole team. Kickoff was at 9:22 a.m. EDT with a temperature of 29 degrees, with snow falling.

“We can make excuses all we want. We get back to work this weekend and looking forward to a better showing at the Gamecock Invitation on April 9.”

Tennessee has not lost to a college team in 15s competition since Nov. 23, 2019.

The Vols won the 2021 national championship in 15s competition. Tennessee (11-0) outscored its opponents, 373-127, and recorded three shutouts in 2021.

Fighting Irish 7s Invitational: Tennessee’s opponent and bracket announced

The Fighting Irish 7s Invitational will take place March 26 at Stinson Rugby Field in Notre Dame, Indiana.

Tennessee will compete in the Fighting Irish 7s Invitational hosted by Notre Dame.

The Vols will play Miami University at 9:22 a.m. EDT in the first round of the south bracket.

Tennessee competed in 15s play during the St. Patrick’s Day Rugby Tournament March 12-13 in Savannah, Georgia. Tennessee defeated Buffalo State, 57-0. The Vols were victorious against VMI, 37-7, while defeating Notre Dame College, 10-7.

The Vols’ 15s 2022 fall schedule is slated to begin Aug. 27 with its annual UT Old Boys Weekend. The complete 2022 fall schedule has not been released.

Tennessee won the national championship in 2021 for 15s competition, defeating Bowling Green, 36-31, in the 2021 Fall Division-I Collegiate Club Rugby Championship.
