New field turf at Memorial Stadium unveiled

This year, the playing surface at Memorial Stadium will look a little different than it has in the past.

The University of Nebraska shared the first official images of the new field turf since its installation was completed earlier this month. The school had first looked at replacing the current field in 2020 but scrapped that plan due to budget concerns. FieldTurf was first installed at Memorial Stadium in 1999 and was replaced in 2005 and 2013. The 2013 replacement cost approximately $380,000. There’s no word on how much the current replacement will cost.

The new turf looks a little different than in years past. The Huskers dropped the two-toned green field seen in recent years for a single shade of darker green. The end zones have not changed, with the north end zone reading Huskers with the south end zone reading Nebraska. The traditional N remains at midfield as well. Athletic Director Trev Alberts did admit during a radio interview in January that the school did look at replacing the field turf with a grass surface but decided against it due to the cost of the project and the heavy use of Memorial Stadium. Alberts said the project estimate for a grass playing surface came in at “nearly $8 million.” He also said that “we’re doing more and more things in Memorial Stadium.” “… we’re hosting convocations and graduations in there (Memorial Stadium).

As cool as it would have been to have a grass playing surface, it’s completely understandable why the school stayed with field turf. The grass is far more expensive, and you get a lot less use. It logistically doesn’t make sense for the athletic department and the school to create extra headaches for themselves at a much greater cost.

Installation of field turf at Memorial Stadium underway

The turf will have more of a dull look compared to years past.

The University of Nebraska football official Twitter page announced early Monday that the replacement of the field turf at Memorial Stadium is now underway. The school had first looked at replacing the current field in 2020 but scrapped that plan due to budget concerns. FieldTurf was first installed at Memorial Stadium in 1999 and was replaced in 2005 and 2013. The 2013 replacement cost approximately $380,000. There’s no word on how much the current replacement will cost.

Late last month, athletic director Trev Alberts said during a radio appearance that the new turf would look a little different than in years past. The Huskers will be dropping the two-toned green field seen in recent years for a single shade of darker green. He also announced that the end zones would not change. The north end zone will continue reading Huskers, while the south end zone will read Nebraska. The traditional N will remain at midfield as well. Alberts confessed that he was looking forward to having a more boring look at the layout of the Memorial Stadium ground after several iterations of experimentation by the school athletic department.
