Far Cry and a Marvel game are the latest Xbox Free Play highlights

The next Xbox Free Play weekend is coming up soon, with Far Cry 5, Marvel’s Midnight Suns, and Bassmaster in the spotlight

The next Xbox Free Play weekend is coming up soon, with Far Cry 5, Marvel’s Midnight Suns, and Bassmaster in the spotlight. The promotion is live now and runs through March 26, 2023, at 11:59 p.m. Pacific time for Xbox Live Gold and Game Pass Ultimate subscribers.

Far Cry 5 drops you in Montana, currently overrun with cultists, and sends you across the highways and mountains to uncover their leader’s secrets and boot them out. Marvel’s Midnight Suns is a strategy game from Civilization developer Firaxis that combines XCOM-style tactics with card-based mechanics and even a Persona-like social system.

Unlike the free trial available on consoles, this version isn’t timed.

If you fancy a bit of weekend fishing in the warm, spring sun, but without the outdoors, or the sun, or real fish, then Bassmaster Classic is for you.

The spotlight games are on sale during the free play weekend, so if you like what you see, you can grab them at a steep discount. While the free versions don’t include DLC or expansions, Xbox is putting those on sale during the free play weekend too.

Ubisoft is reportedly working on a standalone Far Cry multiplayer game

Ubisoft is in the middle of developing a Far Cry multiplayer game alongside Far Cry 7, following news of several canceled games

Ubisoft is in the middle of developing a Far Cry multiplayer game alongside Far Cry 7, sources familiar with the projects told Kotaku. The news comes after Ubisoft reported lower earnings than expected, canceled several in-development games, and delayed its pirate game Skull and Bones once again.

Far Cry 7’s reported existence comes as no surprise, considering the survival game series is one of Ubisoft’s flagship franchises. Far Cry 5 was Ubisoft’s second best-selling game at launch, and the publisher said Far Cry 6 improved on those numbers.

The unexpected project is Far Cry multiplayer. As Kotaku noted in their report, some Far Cry games have a multiplayer or competitive component of some kind. This would be the first standalone multiplayer game, though, not unlike 343 Industries did with Halo Infinite.

Details about the game aside from its potential existence are scarce, and Ubisoft declined to comment on “rumors or speculation” when Kotaku asked for confirmation. Several of Ubisoft’s canceled games were reportedly competitive multiplayer games or battle royale games of some kind, but were unattached to established IP.

If Ubisoft is still aiming to replicate its success in the online sphere with Rainbow Six Siege, it makes sense to try with a franchise that already has a devoted audience.

Far Cry and Yakuza headline PlayStation Plus December games

Sony announced the PS Plus games for December, and while some heavy hitters show up, the retro offerings are still slim

If you fancy playing the likes of Far Cry 5, Yakuza, and Pillars of Eternity 2 at no extra charge, then the PlayStation Plus December games selection has some good news for you. Sony announced the next batch of new PS Plus games in a blog post, but while there are plenty of modern games to choose from, the service’s retro games on offer are still slim in number.

Leading the December games is Far Cry 5 from Ubisoft, along with Yakuza: Like A Dragon, Yakuza 6: The Song of Life, perfect if you want to get a taste of RGG Studios’ hit crime series before Like A Dragon: Ishin comes out in February. Judgment, also from RGG, Pillars of Eternity 2, Mortal Shell, and Evil Genius 2 are also available to download for free.

You can also grab Far Cry New Dawn and Far Cry Primal to accompany Far Cry 5.

On the retro side are Ridge Racer 2 and Pinball Heroes, both for the PSP, along with Heavenly Sword, a PS3 action game from Senua maker Ninja Theory. Last of all is Oddworld: Abe’s Exoddus, originally released on the original PlayStation.

All these will be available to download for free on Dec. 20, 2022, for PS Plus Extra and Premium subscribers.

Far Cry 6 is free to play this weekend

For the next few days, Far Cry 6 will be free! Here’s how you can get it.

If you haven’t given Far Cry 6 a try by this point, there’s good news: it’s a freebie for the next few days.

On Thursday, Ubisoft announced that Far Cry 6 is free from Aug. 4 through Aug. 7, 2022, on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via the Ubisoft Store and the Epic Games Store. There are also significant discounts for the game across all available storefronts. We’ll list the details below.

Far Cry 6 free trial discount information

There are roughly three days to take advantage of this deal, so get on that fast. The season pass and other more expansive editions are also discounted if either sounds appealing.

When Far Cry 6 came out last fall, GLHF’s Paolo Sirio thought it was fine

“There’s fun to be had in Far Cry 6, thanks to its squelchy, comfortable gunplay and a number of small innovations to freshen a long-standing formula up a little,” Sirio said. “But it’s not quite enough to make it stand out from any other game released this year.”

It’s probably not something that will light your world on fire, but it could be a fun co-op adventure with friends for relatively cheap.

Watch: ‘Breaking Bad’ star Giancarlo Esposito answers ‘Far Cry 6’ fan mail in-character

Gus Fring has got nothing on Antón Castillo.

It’s not often that an actor of Giancarlo Esposito’s caliber toe-dips into the world of video games, but The Mandalorian and Breaking Bad star is doing just that in Far Cry 6.

Esposito plays Far Cry 6’s central antagonist Antón Castillo, a ruthless dictator of the fictional country of Yara. So he’s who you’ll be facing off against and (hopefully) dethroning before Far Cry 6’s curtain call. Before all that, though, Esposito took some time to address fan questions — some as himself and others in-character as Castillo. It doesn’t matter if you’re a Far Cry, Star Wars, or Breaking Bad fan; this is a treat to see.

Check out Castillo’s, ahem, Esposito’s interview for yourself below.

Several of these Far Cry 6 promotional videos came out this week, and Esposito seems to be having a ball with the bit. I mean, how can you not have fun watching him deconstruct guerilla weaponry? Or where he explains why you are his most challenging foe yet, Walter White be damned.

Esposito is known for playing villains, so there’s no doubt that Castillo will likely be another memorable baddie in the actor’s repertoire. We will find out for sure when Far Cry 6 comes out on Oct. 7.

‘Far Cry 3’ is currently free on the Ubisoft Store

You’d buy it for (less) than a dollar?

Far Cry 3 is one of the most beloved first-person shooters of all time, and it’s available totally for free on the Ubisoft Store right now. Simply create a Ubisoft account, head over to Far Cry 3’s  store page, and click the big button urging you to get it for free.

With Far Cry 6 coming out in a few weeks, Ubisoft likely wants everyone to experience Far Cry 3 beforehand if they haven’t already. After all, the third game popularized the series to mainstream fans and is sitting at an impressive 88 Metacritic  score. Safe to say, it was both a critical darling and fan favorite at the time.

“It’s easy to see why someone would want to visit Rook Island – it’s a stunning tropical location with plenty of fun activities, scenic views, and history worth discovering,” Mitch Dyer said via IGN. “Far Cry 3 disrupts that paradise to challenge your feelings about enjoying violence. Because of lunatics like Hoyt and Vaas, you’ll see beautiful things you never would have.”

If you haven’t given Far Cry 3 a go before, now’s the perfect chance to do so before the free giveaway ends on Sept. 10.
