Fantasy football Week 13 waiver wire adds: Bring on the new guard

Highlighting the top five fantasy football waiver wire adds for Week 13, including injury replacements and potential playoff heroes.

As the football world still awaits the Week 12 AFC North battle between the Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers, fantasy football managers prepare for an unprecedented week on the waiver wire. Be sure to follow the updates in your league, but waivers are expected to clear Friday morning. Below, we look at the top fantasy football waiver wire adds and injury replacements for Week 13.

The Week 13 schedule has already undergone significant changes to accommodate Wednesday Afternoon Football in Week 12. There’ll be no Thursday game this week, but there will be a Monday Night Football doubleheader and a Tuesday contest.

Teams on bye: Carolina Panthers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Fantasy football Week 13 waiver adds

Los Angeles Rams RB Cam Akers

Akers, the 52nd overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft was the breakout star of Week 12. He carried the ball nine times for a career-high 84 yards and scored his first NFL touchdown in the Rams’ 23-20 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. The bulk of the damage came on a 61-yard run, but he seemed to usurp both Darrell Henderson and Malcolm Brown with a goal-line carry for the score to give L.A. a brief 20-17 lead in the fourth quarter.

The Rams play the Arizona Cardinals and New England Patriots in the next two weeks, respectively. It’s a Week 15 matchup against the New York Jets and Week 16 against the Seattle Seahawks that are the main draws for fantasy managers planning for a championship run.

Atlanta Falcons RB Ito Smith

RB Brian Hill was expected to be the top replacement for an injured Todd Gurley in the Falcons’ Week 12 game against the Las Vegas Raiders. It was Smith, a fourth-round pick of the 2018 draft, who rushed 12 times for 65 yards and a touchdown in the defense-dominated 43-6 win. Smith also added a season-high 4 receptions for another 10 yards.

With the Falcons’ 2020 season all but officially lost and Gurley’s contract expiring at season’s end, the Falcons would be wise to give Smith an extended look. He remains under contract for next year while Hill will be a free agent. Some production from Smith over the final few weeks of the season could save the Falcons a backfield draft pick as they begin a soft rebuild.

Minnesota Vikings QB Kirk Cousins

Cousins has thrown for 3 touchdowns in three of his last four games and four of his last six. He has 11 total touchdown passes against just 1 interception in those last four outings and has topped 300 yards in each of his last two games.

Rookie WR Justin Jefferson is already a burgeoning superstar and Adam Thielen remains a dynamic threat all over the field. The Vikings play the Jacksonville Jaguars Sunday, and Cousins can help get fantasy teams into the playoffs with a win.

Green Bay Packers WR Allen Lazard

Lazard scored his third touchdown of the season in his second game back from injury. He has been targeted a total of 10 times in his two games back and made 4 receptions in Week 12.

At 6-foot-5, he’s a red-zone threat for QB Aaron Rodgers in one of the NFL’s highest-scoring offenses. He’s a strong WR3 option with only favorable matchups through Week 16.

Buffalo Bills WR Gabriel Davis

Davis caught 3 of 4 targets for 79 yards in Week 12 with a touchdown catch coming on a pass from WR Cole Beasley. It was his fourth touchdown and third game with at least 70 yards this season. Bills WR John Brown was placed on the Reserve/Injured list last week due to an ankle injury, so Davis will have room to operate as the No. 2 receiver for at least the next couple of weeks.

Fantasy football Week 12 waiver wire adds: All aboard the Gus Bus!

Highlighting five fantasy football waiver wire adds for Week 12 with a couple of rising wide receivers and a new starter at RB.

As the NFL playoff picture begins to take shape, the fantasy football playoffs are right around the corner. We’re heading into the penultimate week of the regular season for most leagues and fantasy managers need to either take chances for a big points week or begin planning ahead for their championship run. Below, we look at the top fantasy football waiver wire adds and injury replacements for Week 12.

Fantasy football Week 12 waiver adds

Baltimore Ravens RB Gus Edwards

Ravens RBs Mark Ingram and J.K. Dobbins tested positive for COVID-19 Monday. They’ll be unavailable for Thursday’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, if it happens, thrusting Edwards and Justice Hill to the top of the depth chart.

Edwards has totaled 418 yards from scrimmage and three touchdowns on a modest 85 carries and three receptions while playing second- or third-string duties in the Ravens’ run-heavy offense. He has a tough matchup in Week 12, but he’ll have the volume and is at least a high-floor FLEX option.

Minnesota Vikings RB Alexander Mattison

The running back pickings on the waiver wire this week are slim behind Edwards. Check to make sure the likes of Kalen BallageWayne Gallman and Zack Moss aren’t toiling away, but they’re all widely owned.

I’m generally against handcuffing running backs in fantasy as a personal strategy, but we’re late enough in the season and the upside is plenty high enough with Mattison. Generally, a backup to a true bell-cow like Dalvin Cook isn’t worthy of a roster spot to sit on the bench, but roster managers with their playoff spot locked up can add a potential RB1 in Mattison. Should Cook miss a game for any reason, Mattison will slide in as an RB1 in any matchup.

Indianapolis Colts WR Michael Pittman Jr.

Pittman was featured in this piece last week, and he is again after catching all three of his targets for 66 yards and his first NFL touchdown against the Green Bay Packers in Week 11. He has favorable upcoming matchups against the Tennessee Titans, Houston Texans and Las Vegas Raiders – all three in domes – and has a higher upside than any other Colts pass-catcher.

New York Jets WR Denzel Mims

Mims has been targeted eight times in each of his last two games. While he caught just 7 of those 16 targets, he topped 60 yards in both games. The Jets passing attack is highly inefficient, but Mims is proving to be a big-play threat and has plenty of opportunity against nonchalant defenders late in lopsided games.

New York Giants QB Daniel Jones

Jones has completed 20-plus passes in four straight games and has gone back-to-back outings without an interception for the first time all season. He has talented pass-catchers in TE Evan Engram and WRs Sterling Shepard and Darius Slayton who are helping pad his stats with yards after the catch.

The Giants have a favorable schedule (for fantasy scoring) featuring games against the Cincinnati Bengals, Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals that can help get you into the playoffs before tougher matchups against the Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens in Weeks 15 and 16, respectively.
