Fantasy football Week 9 waiver wire adds: Curtis Samuel breaking out

Looking at the breakout fantasy football performers of the week and ranking the top waiver wire adds and injury replacements for Week 9.

The NFL is a passing league. As a result, wide receivers are the hot commodity on fantasy football waiver wires this week. Some are familiar names with new opportunities, while others are long-awaited breakout stars. Below, we look at the top fantasy football waiver wire adds and injury replacements for Week 9.

Teams on bye: Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, Los Angeles Rams and Philadelphia Eagles.

Fantasy football Week 9 waiver adds

Carolina Panthers WR Curtis Samuel

Samuel has returned from a one-week absence to score 3 touchdowns in his last two games. He has caught 10 of 11 targets for 79 yards and a score, and he has also rushed for 28 yards and 2 touchdowns on 4 attempts.

The rushing work may dwindle with RB Christian McCaffrey expected to return this week, against the Kansas City Chiefs, but Samuel has proven himself to head coach Matt Rhule and offensive coordinator Joe Brady. They’ll continue to get him the ball and let him make plays with his feet.

Detroit Lions WR Marvin Jones Jr.

After a quiet start to the season, Jones recorded a season-high 80 yards in Week 7 and scored twice while catching 3 of 7 targets in the blowout Week 8 loss to the Indianapolis Colts.

His role will grow for Week 9 and beyond with WR Kenny Golladay (hip) expected to miss multiple games. Jones played a season-high 98% of the offensive snaps in Week 8 and has plush matchups ahead against the secondaries of the Minnesota Vikings, Washington Football Team and Carolina Panthers.

Baltimore Ravens RB Gus Edwards

Ravens rookie RB J.K. Dobbins has been the more appealing fantasy commodity and is on the majority of rosters. Edwards has found the end zone in back-to-back games, however, and gained a season-high 87 yards on 16 attempts while starting with Mark Ingram (ankle) out of the lineup in Week 8.

Both Edwards and Dobbins will be RB3/FLEX options as long as Ingram is sidelined.

Philadelphia Eagles WR Jalen Reagor

Reagor was mentioned in this piece last week but remains widely available. He returned from the Reserve/Injured list against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football to catch 3 of 6 targets for just 16 yards, but he scored a touchdown. The 21st overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft should continue to see his role grow if he can stay healthy for the NFC East-leading Eagles.

Houston Texans WR Randall Cobb

Cobb matched a 2020 season-high with 95 receiving yards in Week 8 while catching 8 of 10 targets. He’s well worth a preemptive add with trade rumors continuing to swirl around Texans WR Will Fuller ahead of Tuesday’s 4 p.m. ET trade deadline.

Fantasy football Week 8 waiver wire adds: Replacing Odell Beckham Jr.

Looking at the breakout fantasy football performers of the week and ranking the top waiver wire adds and injury replacements for Week 8.

Yet another wave of injuries tore through the NFL last week with several key fantasy starters now set to miss multiple games. The most notable of which were Seattle Seahawks RB Chris Carson and Cleveland Browns WR Odell Beckham Jr. Below, we look at the top fantasy football waiver wire adds and injury replacements for Week 8.

Teams on bye: Arizona Cardinals, Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars and Washington Football Team

Fantasy football Week 8 waiver adds

Seattle Seahawks RB Carlos Hyde

Hyde signing with the Seahawks as a free agent was one of the biggest surprises of the offseason following his career-best 1,070-yard rushing season with the Houston Texans in 2019. After a quiet first three games of 2020 and some time missed due to injury, he got his opportunity in Week 7 with Carson going down to a foot injury. He ran for 68 yards and a touchdown on Sunday Night Football against the Arizona Cardinals.

The veteran will be a high-end RB2 for as long as Carson remains sidelined. The Seahawks have some difficult upcoming matchups against top run defenses, but QB Russell Wilson‘s mobility helps take away a lot of the pressure Hyde would face.

San Francisco 49ers RB JaMycal Hasty

49ers running backs continue to drop like flies, with Jeff Wilson Jr. the latest to go down. Hasty, an undrafted free agent out of Baylor, played just 23% of the offensive snaps in the Week 7 win over the New England Patriots, but he ran nine times for 57 yards.

RB Tevin Coleman may return from injury this week and Jerick McKinnon remains available, but Hasty may be the most comparable to Raheem Mostert. He’s a potential league-winner who’s widely available on waiver wires.

Cleveland Browns WR Donovan Peoples-Jones

People-Jones caught all three of his targets for 56 yards, including the winning touchdown in Week 7. The sixth-round rookie stepped up with a couple of huge grabs once Beckham left the game.

Veteran WR Rashard Higgins finished with the more impressive stat line with six catches for 110 yards on six targets, but it’s notable People-Jones caught the winning touchdown. The Browns’ passing attack will be much better dispersed with OBJ off the field, but DPJ has the highest ceiling of those left.

Philadelphia Eagles WR Jalen Reagor

Reagor (thumb) was designated to return from the Reserve/Injured list Monday and his return could help offset the loss of WR DeSean Jackson (ankle). The first-round rookie caught five of eight targets for a total of 96 yards in his first two NFL games before going down due to injury.

Travis Fulgham is the clear No. 1 option in the Eagles passing game, but there’s plenty of work for Reagor awaiting him as soon as he’s ready.

New York Giants WR Sterling Shepard

Shepard returned from injury to catch six of eight targets for 59 yards and a touchdown against the Eagles on Thursday Night Football. Giants QB Daniel Jones has attempted at least 30 passes in all but one game this year and Big Blue is desperate for play-makers.

Shepard should be a weekly WR3 with the Giants throwing the ball on 62.13% of their play calls.

Fantasy football Week 7 waiver wire adds: Travis Fulgham here to stay

Looking at the breakout fantasy football performers of the week and ranking the top waiver wire adds for Week 7.

We head into Week 7 of the 2020 NFL season with all 14 games expected to take place as scheduled. The New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles kick off the week on Thursday Night Football. There is one game set for Monday Night Football with the Chicago Bears visiting the Los Angeles Rams. Below, we look at the top fantasy football waiver wire adds for Week 7.

Teams on bye: Baltimore Ravens, Indianapolis Colts, Miami Dolphins, Minnesota Vikings

Fantasy football Week 7 waiver adds

New York Jets RB La’Mical Perine

In the Jets’ first game without RB Le’Veon Bell (now with the Kansas City Chiefs), the rookie Perine played 56.5% of the team’s offensive snaps. He was largely unimpressive in his 39 times on the field, finishing with 7 carries for 27 yards, and 2 catches for 9 yards.

He played more snaps than both Frank Gore and Ty Johnson combined. While Gore had more touches and both had more rushing yards, the fourth-round rookie seems to be the preferred choice of coaching and management. There’s no telling how much longer HC Adam Gase will be calling the shots, but Perine is worth owning for as long as he is.

Philadelphia Eagles WR Travis Fulgham

Fulgham is still available in nearly 70% of leagues despite scoring a touchdown in three straight games. The former sixth-round pick of the Detroit Lions leads his team in receiving yards and touchdowns.

WRs DeSean Jackson and Alshon Jeffery could both return in Week 7, and rookie Jalen Reagor will be eligible to return from the Reserve/Injured list this week. Fulgham has a clear connection with QB Carson Wentz and will remain a big part of the passing attack.

Los Angeles Chargers RB Justin Jackson

Jackson and the Chargers come off a Week 6 bye following a 15-carry, 71-yard performance against the New Orleans Saints in Week 5. It was the Chargers’ first game since RB Austin Ekeler went down to injury.

The third-year back played 59% of the offensive snaps and caught five of six targets for another 23 yards while drawing the start. The Chargers have a very favorable upcoming schedule with games against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Denver Broncos, Las Vegas Raiders, Miami Dolphins and Jets. Both Jackson and the higher-owned Joshua Kelley should both be fantasy relevant over that stretch.

Denver Broncos WR Tim Patrick

Patrick has back-to-back 100-yard games while working with QBs Brett Rypien and Drew Lock. He has a total of 10 catches on 15 targets over those two games. He was targeted a total of 18 times and made 11 catches for 138 yards over the final four games of 2019 while working with Lock and has a stronger rapport with his QB than the Broncos’ rookie wideouts at this point.

Indianapolis Colts TE Trey Burton

Burton was targeted five times for the third straight game since returning from the IR in Week 4. He made four catches for 58 yards and a touchdown and also scored a goal-line rushing touchdown while taking the snap.

His play sparked a Colts’ red-zone offense that had greatly struggled through the first five weeks. He should be a go-to option for QB Philip Rivers coming out of the Week 7 bye as Indy tries to stay close to the Tennessee Titans in the AFC South standings.

Fantasy football Week 6 waiver wire adds: Andy Dalton soars up QB ranks

Looking at the breakout fantasy football performers of the week and ranking the top waiver wire adds for Week 6.

The 2020 NFL season continues to keep fantasy football roster managers on their toes. Uncertainty surrounding games as a result of COVID-19 testing has led to delays, postponements and rescheduling each of the last two weeks. As a result, fantasy managers have had to prepare like never before with backup options and contingency plans. Below, we look at the top fantasy football waiver wire adds for Week 6.

Teams on bye: Seattle Seahawks, Los Angeles Chargers, New Orleans Saints, Las Vegas Raiders

Fantasy football Week 6 waiver adds

Dallas Cowboys QB Andy Dalton

The most notable injury in Week 5 was to Cowboys QB Dak Prescott, as he suffered a season-ending dislocated ankle and has already undergone surgery. Dalton takes over at the helm of an offense averaging a league-high 488.0 yards of offense per game.

While Dalton, who signed a 1-year, $3-million contract this offseason, won’t fully replicate Prescott’s production, he’ll be able to come close while flanked by RB Ezekiel Elliott and WRs Amari CooperMichael Gallup and CeeDee Lamb. Dalton should be an every-week starter and QB1 for the rest of the season. He completed 9 of 11 passes for 111 yards after replacing Prescott in Week 5.

Minnesota Vikings RB Alexander Mattison

Mattison was widely drafted as a top handcuff coming into the 2020 fantasy season. The second-year third-round pick was being used sparingly in both the rushing and passing games behind starter Dalvin Cook, but he broke out with 20 carries for 112 yards against the Seahawks in Week 5 with Cook hampered by a groin injury.

Cook is headed toward a questionable tag for the Vikes’ Week 6 home date with the lowly Atlanta Falcons, potentially setting up Mattison for 25-30 touches in a game in which Minnesota is favored by 3.5 points. A fully-healthy Cook will regain the lion’s share of backfield work when first able, but Mattison is in line to be a top RB option this week.

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Chase Claypool

Claypool was the top fantasy scorer of Week 5 with 7 catches for 110 yards and 3 touchdowns on 11 targets. He added 3 carries for 6 yards and a touchdown on the ground. The second-round Canadian rookie by way of Notre Dame previously had season highs of 4 targets, 3 receptions and 88 yards with just one touchdown through three games.

Claypool also has 5 catches of 20-plus yards on the season and has clearly endeared himself to QB Ben Roethlisberger. He should be expected to maintain a big role in the passing game and has exhibited his matchup-winning upside.

Los Angeles Chargers RB Justin Jackson

All eyes were on rookie RB Joshua Kelley in the Chargers’ first game without Austin Ekeler. Jackson, a seventh-round rookie of the 2018 NFL Draft, stole the show in the lead role with 15 carries for 71 yards and 5 catches on 6 targets for another 23 yards against the New Orleans Saints on Monday Night Football. He played 59% of the offensive snaps.

The Chargers, 1-4, have a very favorable schedule coming out of the bye that will call for plenty of rushing work. Jackson will be an RB2 for as long as Ekeler remains out.

Jacksonville Jaguars WR Laviska Shenault Jr.

Shenault’s role is quickly evolving from a hybrid/gadget-type to more reliable usage in the passing game. He had season highs of 7 catches and 8 targets in Week 5 and finished with 79 receiving yards in the Jags’ 30-14 loss to the Houston Texans.

Jacksonville will continue having primarily negative game scripts calling for plenty of passing work. Shenault should be viewed as the team’s most appealing option in that attack with WR DJ Chark leaving the Week 5 contest due to an ankle injury.

Fantasy football Week 5 waiver wire adds: Chasing the RB carousel

Looking at the breakout fantasy football performers of the week and ranking the top waiver wire adds for Week 5.

Week 5 of the 2020 NFL season will be the first week with two teams on official byes. Fantasy managers will need to replace players from the Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers; luckily, the Tennessee Titans and Pittsburgh Steelers return to action this week after having their Week 4 contest postponed due to the Titans’ COVID-19 outbreak. Below, we look at the top fantasy football waiver wire adds for Week 5.

Fantasy football Week 5 waiver adds

New England Patriots RB Damien Harris

Congrats to fantasy managers who got a jump start with Harris by adding him Monday afternoon when Patriots RB Sony Michel was first placed on the Reserve/Injured list. Harris, a third-round choice in the 2019 NFL Draft, ran for 100 yards on 17 carries in New England’s 26-10 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

While the absence of QB Cam Newton put a greater focus on the ground attack for the Patriots, Newton’s eventual return after testing positive for COVID-19 will help open up some running lanes. With Michel on IR, the top job belongs to Harris for the foreseeable future.

Los Angeles Chargers RB Justin Jackson

Jackson has carried the ball just eight times for 13 yards while catching both of his two targets for another 12 yards through the air, but starting RB Austin Ekeler is expected to miss 4-6 weeks due to a serious hamstring strain.

While he’ll be replaced by fourth-round rookie Joshua Kelley in the lead role, the Chargers likely will continue using a two-RB system behind rookie QB Justin Herbert. Jackson will warrant FLEX consideration in favorable upcoming matchups against the New York Jets, Miami Dolphins and Jacksonville Jaguars.

Cleveland Browns RB D’Ernest Johnson

The most notable injury of Week 4 was to Browns RB Nick Chubb. He’ll be placed on IR due to a knee injury and could reportedly miss as many as six weeks.

Kareem Hunt will be the main beneficiary in both the passing and running games, but the undrafted Johnson should see plenty of the rushing work after gaining 95 yards on 13 carries after Chubb went down in Week 4. The Browns’ upcoming schedule includes difficult matchups against the Indianapolis Colts and Pittsburgh Steelers, but Johnson needs to be added as an insurance policy for Hunt.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Scotty Miller

Miller has topped 80 yards each of the last two weeks and scored his first touchdown of the season against the Chargers in Week 4. His usage depends heavily on the health of WRs Chris Godwin (hamstring) and Mike Evans (ankle) but both are at risk of missing the Week 5 Thursday Night Football matchup against the Chicago Bears on short rest.

Bucs TE O.J. Howard (Achilles) is also expected to miss some time, so Miller could see 5-10 targets and be able to return adequate fantasy value despite this week’s difficult matchup.

Green Bay Packers TE Robert Tonyan

The Packers are on bye this week, but this is always a good time to get the jump on your league mates. Tonyan reached the end zone three more times in Week 4 with season highs of six targets, six receptions and 98 yards.

WR Davante Adams will likely return in Week 6, but WR Allen Lazard will remain on IR. Tonyan has proven himself a reliable option for QB Aaron Rodgers and should have consistent red-zone usage all season in Green Bay’s thin receiving corps.

Use the bye week to plan ahead and claim Tonyan while others are focused on Week 5.

Fantasy football Week 4 waiver wire adds: Justin Jefferson’s time

Looking at the breakout fantasy football performers of the week and ranking the top waiver wire adds for Week 4.

A pair of rookie wide receivers broke out in a big way in Week 3. Fantasy football roster managers will need to head to the waiver wire to see if they’re still available or were recently dropped by frustrated league-mates. Below, we look at the top waiver wire adds for Week 4 of the fantasy football season and beyond.

Fantasy football Week 4 waiver adds

Minnesota Vikings WR Justin Jefferson

Jefferson caught seven of nine targets for 175 yards and his first professional touchdown against the Tennessee Titans in Week 3, after being targeted a total of six times in his first two games. The first-round pick out of LSU also played a season-high 78% of the offensive snaps and is the clear No. 2 option to Adam Thielen in the Vikings’ passing attack.

He took full advantage of his first start and will continue to thrive with the Vikings having favorable upcoming passing matchups against the Houston Texans, Seattle Seahawks and Atlanta Falcons in the next three weeks. He should be viewed as a weekly WR3 for the remainder of the season.

San Francisco 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk

In just his second game of the season, Aiyuk caught five of eight targets for 70 yards and also carried the ball three times for 31 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

The 49ers’ injuries continued to pile up in Week 3, with TE Jordan Reed joining TE George Kittle and WR Deebo Samuel on the shelf. The 49ers’ next two games are against the Philadelphia Eagles and Miami Dolphins, promising further production from Aiyuk, especially if the others are allowed additional time to recover with the soft schedule.

Chicago Bears TE Jimmy Graham

Graham, a five-time Pro Bowler but not since 2017, had a resurgent performance against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 3. He caught six of 10 targets for 60 yards and two touchdowns. Both Mitchell Trubisky and Nick Foles connected with Graham for a TD.

Foles is the Bears’ newly-named starter for Week 4 and beyond. He has long favored tight ends in the passing game, dating back to his time with the Philadelphia Eagles. Look for Graham to become a reliable third option in the Bears’ passing attack and a low-tier TE1 at a thin position group around the league.

Miami Dolphins RB Myles Gaskin

Gaskin has fully emerged as the Dolphins’ workhorse back despite the offseason additions of Jordan Howard and Matt Breida. He played a season-high 75% of the offensive snaps in Week 3 and topped 60% for the third week in a row.

The Dolphins will rarely have a favorable schedule and they have a particularly tough Week 4 matchup against the Seattle Seahawks in what will need to be a pass-heavy game for Miami. Use this time to add Gaskin with other fantasy managers focused elsewhere.

San Francisco 49ers RB Jeff Wilson

Wilson carried the ball 12 times for just 15 yards but found the end zone and added three receptions for 54 yards and another score through the air in the 49ers’ Week 3 rout of the New York Giants. Starter RB Jerick McKinnon also suffered a ribs injury and could be joining Raheem Mostert and Tevin Coleman on the sidelines.
