The FDU men’s basketball team got stuck in a pesky elevator and fans dropped so many top-tier jokes

To be honest, these are some top-floor jokes. (Sorry. We’ll show ourselves out.)

The Fairleigh Dickinson men’s basketball team had a wild Thursday evening. The team was scheduled to play Long Island University, but the game did not start on time because nearly the entire team was stuck in an elevator.

Various things can delay games, including technical issues, animals and even power outages. But what happens when nearly an entire team doesn’t show up for a matchup because they’re stuck in an elevator? (Remember Virginia Tech?)

Thursday evening, the Fairleigh Dickinson men’s basketball team traveled to Brooklyn, New York, to play at Long Island University. The local fire department had to be called in to rescue multiple players mysteriously stuck in an elevator.

Thankfully, the team was rescued after about 15 minutes and eventually won the game.

However, that did not stop the Fairleigh Dickinson social media team and the internet from cracking jokes about the situation.

Opinion: The beauty of March Madness is defined by underdogs

What is it about March Madness that gets fans hooked?

Every year in March, millions of fans are glued to their televisions and find themselves rooting for teams they have never heard of. Rooting for those teams as if they had followed them their whole lives.

This year, there were 20,056,273 brackets made on ESPN despite a 1-in-120 billion chance of a perfect bracket. What is it about March Madness that gets fans hooked?

The truth is that we all love an underdog story. People pull for Cinderella every tournament as they hope and pray the clock doesn’t strike midnight for those schools. Let me throw some teams at you: [autotag]Lehigh[/autotag], [autotag]Saint Peter’s[/autotag], [autotag]Oral Roberts[/autotag], [autotag]Florida Gulf Coast[/autotag], [autotag]UMBC[/autotag], and this year [autotag]Princeton[/autotag] and [autotag]Fairleigh Dickinson[/autotag].

These teams are a combined 15-15 in the NCAA Tournament since 2010. That doesn’t sound bad, but since 2010, there have been 868 tournament games in total. These seven teams make up only 0.03% of games in that time. The closest any of these teams have gotten to a national championship was Saint Peter’s, who went all the way to the Elite Eight last year. Princeton has a chance to tie that feat if it can beat Creighton this week.

What is it about the March Madness format that makes it so special? Why doesn’t that format work in other sports? I think it’s because the games are one-offs. The format doesn’t work in baseball and softball because the underdogs have to win a three-game series. It doesn’t work in football because there is too much parity.

This would be like lining Akron up against Georgia in college football. It wouldn’t work even in a one-off. It would be a cupcake game. They would lose by at least 28.

The thrill of victory, the agony of defeat. The “one shining moment” that endures the test of time. You may not know who these teams are when they enter the tournament, but you’ll never forget their magical run in March.

That is the beauty of March Madness.

Dayton’s pep band stepped up to support Fairleigh Dickinson during its March Madness run and went all out

March Madness pep band solidarity!

Marching bands and college sports go hand and in hand like chocolate and peanut butter. But when a school doesn’t have a marching band and makes it to March Madness, what do you do?

Well, if you’re Fairleigh Dickinson, who made it to the second round of the 2023 men’s NCAA tournament, you borrow a pep band from someone else! Headed into the tournament, No. 16 Fairleigh Dickinson seemed unlikely to make a lot of noise. Then, the Knights upset No. 1 Purdue on Friday to become the second No. 16 team to upset the top seed in men’s NCAA tournament history.

And perhaps Fairleigh Dickinson’s biggest fans this year were Dayton’s pep band, who the Knights borrowed for the tournament since the school doesn’t have one! In the ultimate show of band solidarity, local school Dayton and its pep band has been cheering on and supporting Fairleigh Dickinson from the sidelines with the school’s fight song and more.

And hey, it seems as if even props have been involved as well!

Oh and just for fun, Dayton’s band director turned up the style with his outfit for the team’s Sunday matchup against Florida Atlantic.

Seriously, props to Dayton’s pep band for going all out for Fairleigh Dickinson. How cool is that?

The FDU men’s basketball Twitter account has become best friends with the UMBC Twitter account, and it’s great

UMBC finally found a best friend in Farleigh Dickinson.

Finding a best friend is one of the best feelings in life. It’s what happens when you find someone on the same wave as you.

You like the same things. You do the same things. Sometimes you even eat the same foods. There are just a bunch of commonalities between you and another person. It’s always just a good time.

Now, the UMBC Twitter account finally has a best friend. It’s the Farleigh Dickinson men’s basketball team’s Twitter account. What do they have in common?

They both thrive in creating absolute chaos and busting brackets.

The UMBC Twitter account celebrated Fairleigh Dickinson’s victory over Purdue, which destroyed every men’s NCAA tournament bracket.

The FDU Twitter account caught wind of this and declared their new friendship together.

It was always going to be hard for UMBC to find someone who understood it. After all, it’s not often that you get a 16-seed upsetting a 1-seed. But if there’s anyone who understands the feeling, it’s FDU.

You absolutely love to see it. Well, let me take that back. Not if you’re Purdue. But everyone else? Again, you love to see it.

Tobin Anderson shared a quick, but sweet, hug with his son before celebrating FDU’s win over Purdue with his team

This is such a sweet and well-earned moment for the coach.

No matter what happens from here on out in the men’s NCAA tournament, Fairleigh Dickinson will always have the moment it beat Purdue and busted — quite literally — every single bracket.

The team’s head coach, Tobin Anderson, turned out to be the star of the show. He believed in his team from the very beginning — enough to call his own shot on their win before it even seemed possible.

That belief helped him put the players in the best positions to take down the Goliath that was Purdue and that’s exactly what FDU did. Good on them.

Of course, the team had their celebratory moment after the game. But before Anderson could join them in the locker room he had to share this quick embrace with his son, who was absolutely pumped for his dad and their team.

That’s such a sweet moment. And a well-earned one, too, considering what Anderson and the rest of the FDU crew just accomplished.

As a 16-seed, FDU has absolutely shocked the world. None of this was supposed to happen. The team isn’t supposed to be in this position. Yet, here we are.

No idea where things go from here, but FDU and Anderson will always have this. It’s great to see them enjoying it together with their loved ones.

Fairleigh Dickinson busted all of the remaining 2023 NCAA men’s tournament brackets

Fairleigh Dickinson: the ultimate bracket buster.

No. 16 Fairleigh Dickinson didn’t just take down No. 1 Purdue in historic fashion on Friday night.

It also busted all of the remaining brackets for the 2023 NCAA men’s tournament.

The gigantic upset victory for Fairleigh Dickinson erased any possibility that anyone who filled out a bracket this year would remain perfect, as not many would’ve expected Purdue to bow out of the tournament so quickly.

However, the Cinderella story of Cinderella stories had other plans, as the brackets fell to the wayside as the Knights pulled off the unbelievable win.

If you were depending on Purdue to win to keep your bracket alive, Fairleigh Dickinson says sorry not sorry.

Hey, a busted bracket isn’t the end of the world, and there’s always next year.

It’s incredibly rare to stay perfect for this long in the NCAA men’s tournament, and Fairleigh Dickinson’s amazing victory will surely heal any pain a busted bracket can cause.

The Purdue whiteboard sure looks like someone punched a giant hole through it

Purdue learned the true meaning of the word upset.

While everyone loves the thrill of victory, nothing quite stings like the agony of defeat. Purdue learned this lesson the hard way during March Madness.

As a No. 1 seed who lost to the No. 16 seed Fairleigh Dickinson in the first round of the NCAA tournament in the East Region, the Boilermakers learned the true meaning of the word upset on Friday evening.

After the game, as FDU celebrated their historic victory, it certainly seems as if someone was very angry in the Purdue locker room and may have it out on an innocent whiteboard.

WISH TV’s Angela Moryan has photos of the aftermath:

As a No. 1 seed like Purdue was, it would obviously be frustrating for anyone on the team or the staff to lose to a No. 16 seed like FDU.

But the damage done to the whiteboard looks like it took more than just a single move. This probably needed several moments of real impact before eventually looking like that.

Purdue has now lost to a No. 16 seed, a No. 15 seed and a No. 13 seed in the past three NCAA tournaments. That is… not great!

Fairleigh Dickinson hero Sean Moore made NCAA tourney history in his hometown

Who is Sean Moore, the Fairleigh Dickinson hero who led his team to an upset over Purdue?

One of the breakout stars of the 2023 NCAA men’s tournament is bound to be Fairleigh Dickinson junior guard Sean Moore.

Moore led the Knights with 19 points in their dramatic takedown of No. 1 seed Purdue during the opening round of this year’s tournament.

Fairleigh Dickinson became just the second No. 16 seed in NCAA men’s tournament history to topple a top-seeded team.

The game was played at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, which just so happens to be Moore’s hometown.

Moore played his high school ball in Reynoldsburg, which is a suburb of Columbus. He also transferred to Fairleigh Dickinson from Division II program St. Thomas Aquinas along with Knights head coach Tobin Anderson and two teammates before the season.

As fate would have it, Moore got to play for his home crowd as he led his team to the absolutely historic upset.

He also hit the game’s pivotal 3-pointer that helped Fairleigh Dickinson cement the victory.

Moore had plenty of family and friends on hand to witness his colossal performance on college basketball’s biggest stage.

It looks like Moore’s cheering section paid off, as he and the Knights will now advance in the 2023 NCAA men’s tournament after an absolutely stunning upset.

Fairleigh Dickinson’s remarkable upset of Purdue, by the numbers

Some remarkable stats from FDU’s massive win over Purdue.

For just the second time in the history of the men’s NCAA tournament, a No. 16 seed upset a No. 1 seed as huge underdog Fairleigh Dickinson took down Purdue. The stunning victory came five years and one day after the UMBC Retrievers knocked off the No. 1 overall seed Virginia in 2018.

FDU’s journey to the win was incredible in a lot of ways, including the fact that the Knights didn’t even win their own conference. Thanks to some quirky NCAA rules that require teams to sit out a transition period when making the leap to Division I, the NEC tournament winner Merrimack had to stay home and watch FDU — which finished second — head to the First Four in Dayton and then on to the first round.

UMBC celebrates Fairleigh Dickinson’s massive upset of Purdue with series of tweets

The Retrievers have a friend!

No. 16 seed Fairleigh Dickinson’s win over No. 1 seed Purdue shocked the men’s college basketball world and turned the tournament bracket upside down. It also gave the UMBC Retrievers a friend.

MORE: Fairleigh Dickinson coach Tobin Anderson was brilliant for correctly predicting a Purdue upset

UMBC became the first men’s team to upset a No. 1 seed as a No. 16 seed when the Retrievers knocked off top-seed Virginia in 2018. It’s been a lonely five years and one day for UMBC, but now they have some well-deserved company. Back in 2018, the UMBC Twitter account — @UMBCAthletics — added 100,000 new followers as they gleefully (and respectfully) basked in the glory of making history.

Thursday night, they took to the internet again to celebrate alongside FDU.

They’re already planning a club with Fairleigh Dickinson and Harvard women’s basketball (which upset No. 1 Stanford in 1998).

They leave us with a nice reminder for the evening, though.
