Chiefs Dave Toub reacts to Harrison Butker’s missed PAT vs. Falcons: ‘I was shocked’

Kansas City #Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Toub reacts to Harrison Butker’s missed PAT vs. Atlanta #Falcons: ‘I was shocked’ | @EdEastonJr

The victory last week pushed the Kansas City Chiefs to 3-0 and undefeated in the young season. A minor moment in the game involving Harrison Butker showed that the veteran kicker isn’t perfect on the field.

Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Toub spoke to the media on Thursday, reflecting on Butker’s rare missed PAT during last Sunday night’s victory over the Atlanta Falcons.

“I was shocked. Everybody was shocked. I don’t know. Can’t explain it, it’s just, he’s a human being.” said Toub. “He missed one, and it bothers him more than anything. But the thing about him is he’s really good at forgetting that and then moving on to the next kick. He’s really good at that. So mentally, he’s strong.”

Butker shanked an extra-point attempt, pushing the ball past the right goalpost. The missed PAT didn’t affect the final score last Sunday night, but it was notable considering how perfect the Chiefs kicker was in those attempts.

“It’s just a miss. He caught some ground on it. He took, it slowed his leg down a little bit, pushed it right”, said Toub. “if you play golf, you, know, you hit the ground, you’re gonna end up, shanking it, it’s what happened there, he took a little bit too much ground on that.”

Butker will look to start a new flawless streak on PATs this Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker is perfect on field goals through 11 games

#Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker hasn’t missed a field goal or extra point attempt through 11 games.

The Kansas City Chiefs have had their share of standout kickers over the years, but few have been as accurate as Harrison Butker, who hasn’t missed a single field goal through 11 games in the 2023 season.

The team recognized Butker’s efforts in a post on Twitter today, noting that their golden-legged kicker is 48-for-48 on his field goal and extra point attempts heading into Kansas City’s Week 13 matchup against the Green Bay Packers.

Butker has been one of the Chiefs’ most productive players for years now, and the results of his efforts speak for themselves. One of the most important qualities a kicker can have is unwavering consistency, especially when games are in their most critical moments.

The former Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket has demonstrated that he excels in crunch time, and will hope to parlay his impressive streak of 48 consecutive successful kicks into another win for Kansas City on Sunday against the Packers.

Packers TE Josiah Deguara makes ‘major miscue’ on blocked PAT vs. Steelers

Packers TE Josiah Deguara made a “major miscue” on the critical blocked PAT against the Steelers.

Green Bay Packers tight end Josiah Deguara made a critical error while in protection on a blocked extra point during Sunday’s 23-19 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Deguara, lined up as the widest protection player to the left of the field goal protection group, allowed Steelers cornerback Patrick Peterson to get around the corner and block the extra point following Jayden Reed’s 35-yard touchdown in the second quarter.

“We gotta get our eyes on our work and make sure that we punch the near shoulder of the widest rusher,” coach Matt LaFleur said Monday.

Deguara hesitated and didn’t get nearly enough of Peterson, who flew past mostly unaffected. With no player threatening inside his right shoulder, Deguara’s job is to make sure the outside rusher is forced wide and away from the kick.

LaFleur described the mistake as a “major miscue” in a game filled with missed opportunities.

The block kept the game at 17-13, and the lost point in the first half ended up being huge in the fourth quarter as the Packers drove the field and were in field goal range on the final drive. Instead of attempting a game-tying field goal, the Packers had to go for a touchdown from the 16-yard line, and Jordan Love was intercepted as time expired. The Steelers had seven players lined up in coverage defending the end zone.

Deguara, now in his fourth year, has played 24 snaps on field goal protection this season and 61 in his career.

Chiefs 2023 special teams preview: Field goals and extra points

Our @WesleyRoesch breaks down what fans should expect from the #Chiefs’ field goal unit in 2023.

The Kansas City Chiefs’ field goal kicking squad got off to a rough start in 2022, but things got back on track by the time the postseason came around.

The team hopes to carry that positive momentum into 2023 as it retains a healthy Harrison Butker, who has been a reliable kicker for the Chiefs since 2017.

Butker will have a handful of new guys blocking for him in 2023, but fans should expect that blocking squad to remain a brick wall like last year. Let’s take a look at who will be blocking for Butker this season, and who has been replaced.

WATCH: Chiefs S Justin Reid converts extra point vs. Browns

#Chiefs safety Justin Reid stepped in to score an extra point in Kansas City’s preseason finale against the #Browns.

Kansas City Chiefs safety Justin Reid is known as a defensive leader, but it is his role as an emergency kicker that was notable on Saturday against the Cleveland Browns.

After the Chiefs evened the score late in the third quarter, Reid came on to kick an extra point to take the lead.

This was a booming kick that went through the uprights with ease. Reid’s leg has proven to be a valuable asset for Kansas City in the past, and his ability to fill in on extra points and three-point field goals shouldn’t go unnoticed.

While this kick is likely to be nothing more than a preseason novelty, Reid a scored point on special teams last year in the Chiefs’ march to Super Bowl LVII. When Harrison Butker went down with an injury in Week 1 back in 2022, Reid stepped in to convert one of his two extra-point attempts against the Arizona Cardinals to help lift Kansas City to its first win of the Super Bowl campaign.

Peyton Manning, Brandon McManus react to Brett Maher’s four missed PATs

“You’ve got to be kidding me! Why are we kicking it? Why are we kicking it?”

Dallas Cowboys kicker Brett Maher missed four-straight extra-point attempts against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday evening, leaving coaches, players, fans and pundits flabbergasted.

After the kicker’s third miss, Peyton Manning stood up during the ManningCast and vented, “You’ve got to be kidding me! Why are we kicking it? Why are we kicking it?”

Manning went on to quip, “Can you cut a guy at halftime of a playoff game?”

Denver Broncos kicker Brandon McManus chimed in on Twitter with a mind-blown emoji.

In a later tweet, McManus said Dallas’ holder should have changed the location of the kick to the middle of the field or the left hashmark to change Maher’s vantage point after consecutive misses.

Fortunately for the Cowboys, Maher’s nightmare night did not end up costing them the game. The 33-year-old kicker later converted a fifth PAT attempt and Dallas ultimately went on to win 31-14.

The Cowboys have said they will stick with Maher going forward.
