Vikings sign exclusive rights free agents Blake Brandel and Khyiris Tonga

The Vikings fortified their depth with the signings of Brandel and Tonga

The Minnesota Vikings had nearly 25 free agents heading into the 2023 offseason and the Vikings have been doing work on bringing some of them back.

On Friday, the Vikings re-signed their two exclusive rights free agents in OT Blake Brandel and NT Khyiris Tonga.

One of the easiest ways that you can build a championship contender is by hitting on both late draft picks and both UDFA’s and the waiver wire. That is how they got both Brandel and Tonga.

Brandel was a sixth-round pick in 2020 out of Oregon State and was a guy that you can hope to develop into a swing tackle. It took three years, but he has done just that. In place of Christian Darrisaw when he was out with his two concussions, Brandel was a stalwart player and did a really solid job at left tackle.

On the defensive line, Tonga was better. He was a top-15 pass rusher per Pro Football Focus grade and had 14 pressures from the interior. He looked more explosive than the average nose tackle and became an important role player.

The important thing for the Vikings is they got both of these players for well below market value due to the exclusive right free agent tag.

Raiders sign two to exclusive rights free agent tenders

Two exclusive rights free agents get tendered by Raiders

As players arrived for the first day of the Raiders offseason program, the team took care of some business. Along with adding free agent edge rusher Tashawn Bowers, the Raiders brought back a couple of their own by signing the tenders of Exclusive Rights Free Agent DB Roderic Teamer as well as TE Nick Bowers.

Teamer joined the Raiders last offseason, coming over from the Chargers. He would appear in ten games, starting the final two games as well as the team’s wild card playoff game at safety due in part to the injury to Johnathan Abram.

Bowers signed with the Raiders as an undrafted free agent out of Penn State prior to the start of the 2020 season. After spending the entire 2020 season on the team’s practice squad, Bowers was called up to the active roster five times last season, seeing a total of 40 snaps on offense and 39 snaps on special teams. He has yet to record a statistic of any kind.

Should Chiefs tender their 4 exclusive rights free agents?

The #Chiefs have decisions to make on four players set to become exclusive rights free agents. Here are our predictions for who gets tendered:

The Kansas City Chiefs have a total of four players who are exclusive rights free agents heading into 2022.

Exclusive rights free agents are players with at least two or fewer accrued years of service in the NFL and an expiring contract. To accrue a season, players must be on a team’s roster for six or more regular-season games during that year. They’re not required to be active for those games, merely on the roster.

In order to retain an exclusive rights free agent, the Chiefs only need to extend a qualifying offer (tender) of a one-year minimum salary. Once a team extends a qualifying offer, players aren’t allowed to negotiate with other teams once free agency begins. If they don’t extend a qualifying offer, said players will become unrestricted free agents at the onset of the free agency period.

Below we’ll take a look at each of the Chiefs’ four exclusive rights free agents and predict whether they’ll be tendered a contract offer:

Seahawks give exclusive rights free agents tender to Ryan Neal

The Seattle Seahawks have tendered safety Ryan Neal in the aftermath of doing the same to defensive tackle Bryan Mone and OG Kyle Fuller.

After handing out ERFA tenders to defensive tackle Bryan Mone and offensive guard Kyle Fuller, the Seattle Seahawks have done the same to safety Ryan Neal, per ESPN’s Brady Henderson.

Neal made a few valuable contributions in 2020, including two interceptions, one of which sealed Seattle’s victory over the Dallas Cowboys in Week 3. He finished the season with 44 combined tackles (33 solo), three tackles for loss, five passes defensed, a safety, and the aforementioned INTs in 13 games and four starts.

Neal could prove to be a crucial piece of the defense next season, especially if a few of Seattle’s defensive playmakers depart in free agency.

Packers tender all 5 exclusive rights free agents

The Packers will retain all five exclusive rights free agents on the one-year, minimum salary tender.

The Green Bay Packers retained all five of the team’s exclusive rights free agents with the one-year tender.

Receivers Allen Lazard and Jake Kumerow, tight end Robert Tonyan, defensive lineman Tyler Lancaster and cornerback Chandon Sullivan will all be back with the Packers in 2020.

Exclusive rights free agents are players with two or fewer accrued seasons and an expiring contract. The one-year tender is worth the league minimum salary.

Lazard, 24, caught 35 passes, finished second on the team in receiving yards (477) and scored three touchdowns during a breakout season in 2019. He has one accrued season and will be an exclusive rights free agent again in 2021.

Kumerow, 28, set career-highs in catches (12) and receiving yards (219) in 2019. If he accrues another season in 2020, he’ll be a restricted free agent in 2021.

Tonyan, 25, caught 10 passes for 100 yards and a touchdown in 2019. If he accrues another season in 2020, he’ll be a restricted free agent in 2021.

Lancaster, 25, finished third on among Packers defensive linemen in snaps played in 2019. If he accrues another season in 2020, he’ll be a restricted free agent in 2021.

Sullivan, 23, broke up six passes and intercepted one over 16 games in 2019. He has one accrued season and will an exclusive rights free agent again in 2021.
