2022 Golfweek Senior Desert Showdown kicks off year-end rush for Player of the Year points

The Sewailo Course at Casino Del Sol in Tucson, Arizona, plays host to some of the best senior amateur golfers in the world beginning November 2nd.

The Sewailo Course at beautiful Casino Del Sol in Tucson, Arizona, plays host to some of the best senior amateur golfers in the world beginning November 2nd. The 2022 Golfweek Senior Desert Showdown tees off on Wednesday with players beginning to make their final pushes for their chance at Golfweek Player of the Year honors.

With just three events remaining for this year’s POY title, the race is tight between No. 1 Rusty Strawn and No. 2 Kevin VandenBerg. With Strawn not in the field in Tucson, VandenBerg can take a bite out of the 1,930 points that separate the two men.

As the only player within nearly 4,000 points of Strawn, VandenBerg is mathematically the only challenger that can overtake Golfweek’s No. 1 as the season ticks down. Nonetheless, players inside the top 10 are all jockeying for strong finishes to gain momentum heading into the 2023 POY race.

No. 7 ranked Steve Maddalena is the next highest-ranked player in the field this week. A first-place finish this week would catapult him all the way to the No. 4 spot thanks to the 1,200 POY points that come with a win.

While it won’t put him close enough to challenge Strawn, Maddalena would most certainly use the late-season push as a building block for next season.

The field also includes Craig Larson, who went wire-to-wire in his victory back in late September.

In all, four different age divisions will duke it out over 54 holes in the desert. Four new champions will be crowned with winners being invited to the year-end Golfweek Tournament of Champions.

If you want to play elite golf courses across the country against some of the best senior amateurs in the world, check out Golfweek’s events schedule. There’s still time to register for the three remaining events that round out the calendar year. The Golfweek Player of the Year Classic in January kicks off the 2023 race for Player of the Year honors. We hope you join us!

Just 19 miles from where golf’s first major of the year, the Chevron Championship, is being played, some of the world’s best senior amateurs are teeing it up themselves.

PGA West in La Quinta, California, is hosting the Golfweek Senior Amateur National Championship, just a 30-minute drive from the Chevron Championship at Mission Hills.

Don Whittemore and Larry Nunez are the two who share a spot at the top of the leaderboard in the 55-to-64 year old division. Both carded even par rounds of 72. With just 10 birdies between the duo, Pete Dye’s Dune Course flexed its muscles to keep the leaders out of red numbers. Robert Funk rounds out the podium after day 1 with a 1-over 73.

Meanwhile, super senior Jeff Burda used five birdies to propel himself to an opening 70 and to the top of the field in the 65-to-69 division. Close on his heels, Steve Cribari posted a 1-under 71 to lead the charge come Friday’s moving day.

Curtis Worley and Doug Hopton-Jones have a share of third place thanks to their even-par rounds.

The legend division is led by Peter Van Ingen and Wyatt Meyer who each just missed out on shooting their age. Their matching 75s are good for a single stroke lead over both Gary Hardin and Evan Long.

Six more golfers are within four shots of the leaders.

In the super legends division, John Walker takes the early lead after a 1-under 71. He holds a single stroke over a trio of men tied at even par. John Seehausen is 1 over and rounds out the top 5 in the 75+ year old division.

The second round tees off at 7 a.m. local time (10 a.m. ET) at the PGA West Mountain Course.

Gators News: Winning weekend for the Gator Nation

A veritable plethora of Gators athletics were in action this weekend with many teams emerging from their respective competitions victorious.

[jwplayer PnmOZkAA]

Welcome to the month of November, Gators fans! It is the best time of year to be in Gainesville as the weather continues to cool off while the football team continues to heat up — and heat up they did just before the halftime whistle on Saturday en route to an important 41-17 win over the Missouri Tigers.

We have plenty of coverage from the game, so let us jump into the other sports in action from this past weekend in Florida athletics, starting with the volleyball team’s pair of shutout wins over the Alabama Crimson Tide in back-to-back home matches on Friday and Saturday. The squad is now 4-0 on the year with four games left in the season.

The soccer team also took to the field on Friday, but once again fell short by a single goal, 2-1, at home against the Tennessee Volunteers. The struggling Lady Gators are now 1-4-1 this year heading into the final two games of the schedule.

The men’s swimming and diving team suffered a 164.5-134.5 loss on the road to the Georgia Bulldogs in their season-opening meet on Friday. Florida’s record against the ‘Dawgs fell to 60-19-3 all-time and 5-4-1 over the previous 10 meets.

Meanwhile, the women also dropped their match with the UGA, 184-116, in Athens. The win for Georgia snaps a two-win streak in the series by the Gators and improves their all-time series record with a mark of 19-15.

Finally, both the men’s and women’s cross country teams competed on Friday at the SEC Championships. The guys finished seventh in the meet on 200 points while the gals finished ninth on 257 points. This was the final race of 2020.

Just a short drive from Palm Springs is PGA West, home of the PGA Tour’s CareerBuilder Challenge and the venue for the 2021 Golfweek Senior Amateur Championship. Two rounds will have you playing the Nicklaus Tournament Course, a favorite among golfers of all skill levels. Nicklaus designed the course to provide opportunity for power off the tee while challenging players with undulating greens that require you to elevate your game to another level. Sandwiched between rounds one and three, the competition will move to Pete Dye’s world-famous Stadium Course which is a must play and favorite among both touring professionals and amateurs.
