EuroLeague women’s basketball saw unprecedented growth in 2022-23 season

Engagement, video views, impressions and followers almost doubled in every category from last season to the 2022-2023 season.

The 2022-2023 EuroLeague women’s basketball season garnered more than 100 million impressions on social media channels for the first time. That milestone was due to its soaring popularity worldwide, including the United States.

Fans from the U.S. took the first-place slot in website viewers for the first time in EuroLeague women’s history. The other countries in the top five were Turkey, Spain, France and Italy, respectively. The U.S. is the only country outside of Europe to crack the top five.

“We are extremely proud to see the continued rise in popularity of EuroLeague Women. The increased digital growth shows that there is a dedicated and passionate audience that keeps building,” commented FIBA Executive Director Europe Kamil Novak.

Engagement, video views, impressions and followers almost doubled in every category from last season to the 2022-2023 season. There has also been a steady increase in mobile app downloads with 8,000 app downloads this season.

“As always, we must continue to push forward in order to reach greater heights and help raise the profile of the women’s game in line with FIBA’s key strategic pillars,” Novak said.

Connecticut Sun players win Czech basketball championship

The team defended their 2022 title and have now won their 25th title and 13th in a row.

Connecticut Sun players Alyssa Thomas and Brionna Jones are making waves across the pond this offseason. Thomas and Jones won the Czech championship this year for ZVVZ USK PRAHA. They play in the Czech League, which is the highest level of basketball competition in the Czech Republic.

The team defended its 2022 title and has won its 25th title and 13th in a row. Jones was named the final MVP and had a double-double in the game.

“You never get tired of these feelings. We do it all because of them,” ZVVZ USK Praha coach Natália Hejková told journalists. “Before the match, I told the players not to underestimate anything. Unlike the match in Brno, it took us a while to get the locomotive going, but at least it was interesting for the spectators.”

Earlier in the month, Thomas was named the EuroLeague Women’s Defensive Player of the Year.

The 2023 WNBA season kicks off on May 19 with Connecticut playing in Indianapolis against the Indiana Fever at 8 p.m. ET.

Breanna Stewart makes history in EuroLeague Women’s Final

Stewart also received the Final Four MVP en route to her second EuroLeague Championship.

Breanna Stewart made history in EuroLeague Women’s Final on Sunday.

Stewart, who plays for Fenerbahçe Alagöz Holding in Turkey, scored 35 points in the championship — the most points in a final. Stewart surpassed legendary WNBA and EuroLeague player Diana Taurasi’s mark of 31.

This was also the first title for Fenerbahçe.

Stewart received the Final Four MVP and her second EuroLeague Championship. Her first came with Russian team UMMC Ekaterinburg in 2021. Ekaterinburg is the same team Brittney Griner played for starting in 2014. Griner was unlawfully detained in Russia in 2022 while returning to play for the team.

Stewart also plays for the New York Liberty of the WNBA where she has garnered success.

Fenerbahçe boasts many impressive players who also play in the WNBA: Satou Sabally of the Dallas Wings, Kayla McBride of the Minnesota Lynx and Courtney Vandersloot of the New York Liberty.

Emma Meesseman of the Chicago Sky also is on the roster and notched her fifth EuroLeague title. Messeman is chasing the record (6) for most EuroLeague titles in the modern era. The record is shared by Taurasi, Spanish star Alba Torrens and retired Russian player Natalia Vieru.
