Where is Ohio State in relation to Michigan, Penn State in ESPN’s early Big Ten FPI rankings?

Are you at all surprised at where Ohio State is in relation to Michigan on ESPN’s FPI rankings? What about the rest of the Big Ten? #GoBucks

If you’ve followed along with us for any period of time, there’s no doubt you know that there are a few things we like to keep tabs on when it comes to the Ohio State football team. One of those is the ESPN Football Power Index which is used as a predictive metric of a team’s future success.

To be fully transparent, the formula used isn’t well-known since it’s held pretty close to the vest by ESPN, but it’s a bit of a combination of returning talent, recruiting reinforcements, and past history, all designed to put a quantitative measure on a team’s roster and potential success.

As luck would have it, ESPN just released its very early FPI rankings for 2023 and Ohio State got a pretty unexpected bump and sits awfully high on the list of teams for 2023, probably much higher than you might expect.

Here on this free Buckeye homer site, we do like to keep tabs on the entire Big Ten, so we thought it a good exercise to rank the Big Ten teams to see how they stack up according to the FPI. Where is Ohio State in relation to Michigan, Wisconsin, and seemingly everyone’s dark horse contender, Penn State?

Here’s the ESPN FPI ranking of all fourteen teams in the conference from worst to first.

ESPN’s FPI predicts each game on Texas A&M’s 2023 schedule

ESPN’s Football Power Index predicts each game on Texas A&M’s 2023 schedule

Texas A&M’s 2023 college football season is still five months away, but that doesn’t mean that every prognosticator can’t begin to weave through the various provided metrics that may accurately, or woefully inaccurately predict the upcoming campaign for the Maroon and White.

On Tuesday, ESPN released their first edition of the 2023 Football Power Index rankings, and for Texas A&M, their forgettable 5-7 2022 season is officially in the rearview mirror as greener pastures are hopefully in sight. According to the rankings, The Aggies, as well as 8 other SEC teams are ranked in the Top 30 including Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Florida, Kentucky, and Arkansas.

For the Aggies, the 2023 schedule is one of their most favorable yet, with home matchups against Auburn, Alabama, South Carolina, and Mississippi State, their road opener against Miami, and an October trip to Rocky Top to take on Tennessee may just define their season.

Led by veteran returners such as wide receiver Ainias Smith, defensive tackle McKinnley Jackson, and strong safety Demani Richardson, the 2023 campaign has the potential to keep fans on their toes for 12 games, and maybe, just maybe, make their first appearance in the College Football Playoffs. Hey, anything can happen ya’ll.

Here is a look at Texas A&M’s 12-game 2023 schedule using FPI’s game-by-game win probability.

You may be surprised where Ohio State ranks on ESPN’s first FPI release of 2023

Is this surprising to you? #GoBucks

Ohio State football is looking to change the narrative of last season when it lost to Michigan for the second-straight time and is in a perceived slide. The Buckeyes haven’t won a Big Ten title in two years and had a bit of a disappointing (for OSU standards) 2023 recruiting class.

Meanwhile, Georgia seems to be on top of the college football world right now, the Wolverines are surging, and Alabama is — well, Alabama despite what many believe was a one-season outlier last season. Add that to the fact that Ohio State has to replace two-time Heisman finalist C.J. Stroud at quarterback and it would appear to be an uphill climb for the scarlet and gray this year, right?

Well, don’t tell ESPN that. The “worldwide leader” just released its first Football Power Index rankings of 2023 and has Ohio State ranked as No. 1. Yes, ahead of the Bulldogs, ahead of Alabama, and ahead of a Michigan team that has a lot of players back from last season’s team that beat OSU in the ‘Shoe and made the College Football Playoff.

Remember, what goes into ESPN’s FPI rankings is a proprietary formula. According to the description of what goes into the rankings, “The Football Power Index (FPI) is a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of a team’s performance going forward for the rest of the season. FPI represents how many points above or below average a team is. Projected results are based on 20,000 simulations of the rest of the season using FPI, results to date, and the remaining schedule. Ratings and projections update daily. FPI data from seasons prior to 2019 may not be complete.”

OK.

Anyway, you have to believe most of what the FPI believes in with the Buckeyes is the combination of returning players and talent on the roster. OSU has a lot of defensive players and skill-position guys left, and the recruiting has been great over the last few years.

So what does the entire top ten of the FPI look like this early on? Here’s a look at the complete top ten:

  1. Ohio State
  2. Alabama
  3. Georgia
  4. LSU
  5. Texas
  6. Michigan
  7. USC
  8. Clemson
  9. Notre Dame
  10. Penn State

All the normal disclaimers apply here. Despite Ohio State being on top of the FPI Rankings plenty of seasons before, it has only won one national title in 2014. In other words, OSU needs to do it on the field. It is also very, very early to put much stock in these sorts of things.

Texas Football: ESPN FPI’s win percentage for each game left on the schedule

Game-by-game predictions for Texas A&M’s 2022 schedule via ESPN’s FPI

See how the Aggies fare week to week going into the 2022 season

Even though head coach Jimbo Fisher finally defeated the all-mighty Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide in 2021, they are coming off of what is seen as a somewhat disappointing 8-4 season, and Texas A&M is hoping to rectify its issues on both sides of the ball, and take full advantage of their 2022 recruiting class, their most talented haul in school history.

According to ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI), Texas A&M is favored in nine of their 12 matchups going into the 2022 season, with one of the tougher schedules in their first three games this season, coming against Sam Houston State, Appalachian State, and the top-ranked Miami Hurricanes, all played at Kyle Field.

The Football Power Index is ESPN’s flagship ratings and prediction scale, described as “designed to measure team strength and predict game and season outcomes.” Overall, it has been hailed for its accuracy over the years while using various data points and statistics to rank teams throughout the season, and predict weekly matchups based on each team’s starters’ skill level, past season performances, home-field success rate, and success rate on the road.

The expectations for the Aggies may be higher than ever due to the recruiting success in the past two seasons, paired with the returning players on both sides of the ball. However, the Quarterback situation, which will be heavily analyzed going all the way into the fall, may squarely determine just how successful Texas A&M will be this season, especially during the first 6 games.

Here is the Aggies game to game predictions according to ESPN’s FPI:

ESPN moves Aggies in new FPI rankings

ESPN’s new FPI rankings have Aggies in a new position

ESPN recently updated their Preseason FPI rankings, known as the Football Power Index, for the upcoming 2022 college football season. During each season, the FPI rankings are updated on a weekly basis and are “designed to measure team strength and predict game and season outcomes.”

When examining the rankings in their current state, the regular blue blood programs that have been preseason darlings year to year are near the top, while the Aggies are in what many will view as a surprising new spot, compared to their previous ranking earlier this year.

One can only ponder that any lack of confidence for the 2022 Texas A&M football team stems from the ongoing quarterback battle that will begin to heat up in a matter of weeks between Max Johnson, Haynes King, and Conner Weigman, as ESPN has based some of these rankings off of the “most important” position in football in recent years.

The best part of the FPI Preseason rankings is their analytic approach vs. purely opinion-based rankings, most working off of the team’s success a year prior, incoming talent, and the players retained, which always spurs some good debate as we all wait for the new season to begin.

Now, here are the brand new ESPN Preseason College Football Top 15 FPI rankings for the 2022 season!
