Texas A&M dropped 3 spots in the newest Football Power Index rankings

Here are the latest ESPN FPI rankings after Texas A&M’s 44-20 loss to South Carolina

Texas A&M (7-2, 5-1 SEC) failed to remain undefeated in SEC play after falling to South Carolina 44-20 on the road on Saturday night, looking lifeless on both sides of the ball after being tied 20-20 at the half.

However, credit to the Gamecocks for playing with consistent physicality and toughness, while Williams-Brice, in front of a packed crowd at night, could have resulted in nearly every SEC team enduring the same fate.

Either way, head coach Mike Elko and his staff have plenty of work during the bye week to get back to playing winning football, while QB Marcel Reed, who finished 18/28 with 206 yards, one touchdown, and an interception, must improve in the pocket if the offense has any chance at keeping up with the Texas Longhorns at the end of the season.

After the win, ESPN’s Football Power Index update revealed a small rise in the rankings for the Aggies.

Texas A&M surprisingly drops in the newest Football Power Index rankings after Week 8

Even after defeating Mississippi State in Starkville, Texas A&M dropping a couple of spots in the newest FPI rankings

Texas A&M (6-1, 4-0 SEC) went on the road and defeated Mississippi State 34-24 behind an impressive second-half defensive effort while starting quarterback Conner Weigman and the offense did just enough to keep the Bulldogs at bay.

Head coach Mike Elko. DC Jay Bateman made defensive adjustments after half-time, neutralizing Bulldogs freshman QB Michael Van Buren, who shredded the Aggie secondary for two passing touchdowns in the first half. However, Weigman’s two costly interceptions provided the home team with one of their three touchdowns.

A win is a win, and the Aggies have shifted their focus to the 8th-ranked LSU Tigers for a primetime showdown inside what could be a sold-out Kyle Field next Saturday night. Even after the tough win in Starkville, ESPN’s updated FPI rankings saw the Aggies fall two spots, which is somewhat surprising.

According to ESPN’s ranking system, FPI represents “a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of a team’s performance going forward for the rest of the season. Texas A&M stays pat in Football Power Index rankings after Week 7 bye

Here is where Texas A&M currentl ranks in the newest ESPN FPI standings

Texas A&M (5-1, 3-0 SEC) enjoyed the bye week during Week 7 of the 2024 college football schedule before preparing to travel to Starkville to face Mississippi State next Saturday, which looks like a “trap game” on paper.

Around the rest of the SEC, Alabama and Tennessee dropped in both major rankings after barely winning against lesser opponents just a week after losing on the road. Even more surprising, Ole Miss was likely eliminated from the College Football Playoffs after losing to LSU in overtime. The Rebels are now 5-2 and 1-2 in SEC play.

Where is Ohio State in relation to Michigan, Penn State in ESPN’s early Big Ten FPI rankings?

Are you at all surprised at where Ohio State is in relation to Michigan on ESPN’s FPI rankings? What about the rest of the Big Ten? #GoBucks

If you’ve followed along with us for any period of time, there’s no doubt you know that there are a few things we like to keep tabs on when it comes to the Ohio State football team. One of those is the ESPN Football Power Index which is used as a predictive metric of a team’s future success.

To be fully transparent, the formula used isn’t well-known since it’s held pretty close to the vest by ESPN, but it’s a bit of a combination of returning talent, recruiting reinforcements, and past history, all designed to put a quantitative measure on a team’s roster and potential success.

As luck would have it, ESPN just released its very early FPI rankings for 2023 and Ohio State got a pretty unexpected bump and sits awfully high on the list of teams for 2023, probably much higher than you might expect.

Here on this free Buckeye homer site, we do like to keep tabs on the entire Big Ten, so we thought it a good exercise to rank the Big Ten teams to see how they stack up according to the FPI. Where is Ohio State in relation to Michigan, Wisconsin, and seemingly everyone’s dark horse contender, Penn State?

Here’s the ESPN FPI ranking of all fourteen teams in the conference from worst to first.

Teams with the most likely chance to make the College Football Playoff in 2023

According to ESPN’s FPI rankings, 11 teams have a decent chance of making the College Football Playoff in 2023.

ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI) rankings were released on Tuesday. Continue reading “Teams with the most likely chance to make the College Football Playoff in 2023”
