Texas A&M drops in newest ESPN Football Power Index rankings

Texas A&M dropped just one spot in the latest ESPN FPI rankings after falling to Auburn in quadruple overtime

Texas A&M (8-3, 5-2 SEC) took a tumble in the rankings after falling to Auburn in quadruple overtime. Still, due to Alabama’s shocking loss to Oklahoma, the Aggies are just one win against the Texas Longhorns away from making it to the SEC Championship for the first time in program history.

However, that’s a much tougher ask after what we saw on Saturday night, as A&M had to claw its way back from a 21-0 deficit before eventually taking a 31-28 lead with just four minutes remaining, only to allow Auburn’s offense to charge down the field and send the game into overtime with a game-tying field goal.

After trading touchdowns and field goals in the first two periods, the new overtime rules came into effect. Auburn’s two-point attempt was successful, while a well-designed play to RB Amari Daniels was dropped, ending the Aggies’ night.

Knowing what’s at stake against the Longhorns, this will be the most important week of practice for the Aggies, as head coach Mike Elko, OC Collin Klein, and, especially, DC Jay Bateman will need to put together a gameplan that doesn’t result in what we saw against the Tigers.

Ahead of facing Texas, ESPN’s Football Power Index update saw the Aggies drop one spot while Missouri and Oklahoma steadily rose in the rankings.

Texas A&M football’s FPI ranking, rating

According to ESPN’s Football Power Index, Texas A&M dropped to No. 19 after falling to Auburn, with a 14.4 FPI rating, the sixth-highest among SEC teams. The Aggies are projected to win 8.3 games and have a 6.5% chance of winning out. Sitting at 8-3 and 5-2, A&M currently has a 6.3% chance of making the playoffs and a 1.0% chance of making the National Championship game.

SEC team in FPI

The top-ranked SEC teams in the upper echelon of the rankings include Texas (26.5), followed by Alabama (4th, 24.3), Georgia (22.5) at 5th, Ole Miss (21.3) at 6th, and Tennessee (20.5) in the 8th spot.

South Carolina dropped three spots (14.3) after defeating Wofford, while Oklahoma (12.0) rose four spots after defeating Alabama. Here is the rest of the SEC rankings:

  • LSU (19th, 12.8)
  • Missouri (21st 12.0)

  • Auburn (29th, 9.7)
  • Arkansas (32nd, 8.2)
  • Vanderbilt (38th, 6.8)
  • Mississippi State (70th, -0.9)

Texas A&M (8-2, 5-1 SEC) and first-year head coach Mike Elko have continued to defy preseason expectations. After defeating New Mexico State 38-3, Texas A&M’s offense made some strides in the passing game, while redshirt freshman quarterback Marcel Reed finished 20/31 for 286 yards and two touchdowns, rushing for another score.

Defensively, junior DL Malick Sylla, in just his second statistical appearance this season, recorded a game-high two sacks and three tackles for loss. At the same time, sophomore DL Rylan Kennedy earned the highest defensive Pro Football Focus score.

Texas A&M dropped 3 spots in the newest Football Power Index rankings

Here are the latest ESPN FPI rankings after Texas A&M’s 44-20 loss to South Carolina

Texas A&M (7-2, 5-1 SEC) failed to remain undefeated in SEC play after falling to South Carolina 44-20 on the road on Saturday night, looking lifeless on both sides of the ball after being tied 20-20 at the half.

However, credit to the Gamecocks for playing with consistent physicality and toughness, while Williams-Brice, in front of a packed crowd at night, could have resulted in nearly every SEC team enduring the same fate.

Either way, head coach Mike Elko and his staff have plenty of work during the bye week to get back to playing winning football, while QB Marcel Reed, who finished 18/28 with 206 yards, one touchdown, and an interception, must improve in the pocket if the offense has any chance at keeping up with the Texas Longhorns at the end of the season.

After the win, ESPN’s Football Power Index update revealed a small rise in the rankings for the Aggies.

Texas A&M surprisingly drops in the newest Football Power Index rankings after Week 8

Even after defeating Mississippi State in Starkville, Texas A&M dropping a couple of spots in the newest FPI rankings

Texas A&M (6-1, 4-0 SEC) went on the road and defeated Mississippi State 34-24 behind an impressive second-half defensive effort while starting quarterback Conner Weigman and the offense did just enough to keep the Bulldogs at bay.

Head coach Mike Elko. DC Jay Bateman made defensive adjustments after half-time, neutralizing Bulldogs freshman QB Michael Van Buren, who shredded the Aggie secondary for two passing touchdowns in the first half. However, Weigman’s two costly interceptions provided the home team with one of their three touchdowns.

A win is a win, and the Aggies have shifted their focus to the 8th-ranked LSU Tigers for a primetime showdown inside what could be a sold-out Kyle Field next Saturday night. Even after the tough win in Starkville, ESPN’s updated FPI rankings saw the Aggies fall two spots, which is somewhat surprising.
