Bellator 255: Patricio Freire chokes out Emmanuel Sanchez to set up showdown with A.J. McKee

Two-division Bellator champion Patricio Freire defended his featherweight title with a submission of Emmanuel Sanchez.

UNCASVILLE, Conn. – Another title defense is in the books, and [autotag]Patricio Freire[/autotag] will be moving to the Bellator featherweight grand prix final against rival A.J. McKee.

On Friday, Freire (32-4 MMA, 20-4 BMMA) defeated [autotag]Emmanuel Sanchez[/autotag] (20-5 MMA, 12-4 BMMA) by technical submission with a guillotine choke at the 3:35 mark of the first round.

The featherweight fight headlined Bellator 255 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. The main card aired on Showtime. The entire event also streamed on MMA Junkie.

The bout was a rematch of a November 2018 meeting at Bellator 209, where Freire won a unanimous decision over Sanchez. Bellator president Scott Coker has since called the bout one of his all-time favorites.

The first round started out slow, but quickly escalated into a “Pitbull” victory. When Sanchez threw a kick, Friere knocked him off balance with a counterpunch. Sanchez hit the canvas and attempted to scramble to his feet. Freire grabbed hold of Sanchez’s neck and pulled for a guillotine. They  crashed to the ground.

With Sanchez in a sitting position, Freire continued to squeeze. Moments later, Freire signaled to the referee Sanchez was unconscious. The referee checked Sanchez’s arm, which flopped to the canvas, and the fight was stopped.

With the victory, Freire extended his winning streak to seven. Freire has now defended his title six times during his second promotional stint as champion. Freire, the No.1 pound-for-pound fighter in Bellator’s new official rankings, defeated Juan Archuleta and Pedro Carvalho to gain entry into the tournament semifinal.

As for Sanchez, the defeat snapped a three-fight winning streak. Prior to Bellator 255, he hadn’t lost since the first defeat to “Pitbull.” Friday’s fight was the first time Sanchez has been finished in his Bellator career. In order to advance to the tournament semifinal, Sanchez defeated Tywan Claxton and Daniel Weichel.

Bellator 255 takes place Friday at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. The main card airs on Showtime and MMA Junkie following prelims on MMA Junkie.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

In the main event, lightweight and featherweight champion [autotag]Patricio Freire[/autotag] (31-4 MMA, 19-4 BMMA) puts his 145-pound title on the line against [autotag]Emmanuel Sanchez[/autotag] (20-4 MMA, 12-3 BMMA) in a rematch. Freire won the first fight by unanimous decision and is a -250 favorite at BetMGM in the rematch, which also is a semifinal fight in the featherweight tournament. Our 13 editors, writers, videographers and radio hosts are taking Freire unanimously – one of four 13-0 nods on the main card.

In the co-feature, the welterweight fight between [autotag]Neiman Gracie[/autotag] (10-1 MMA, 8-1 BMMA) and [autotag]Jason Jackson[/autotag] (13-4 MMA, 4-1 BMMA) nearly is a pick’em – Jackson is just a slight favorite. But our pickers are going with Gracie unanimously.

Also on the main card, [autotag]Tyrell Fortune[/autotag] (9-1 MMA, 9-1 BMMA) runs things back with [autotag]Jack May[/autotag] (11-7 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) after their first heavyweight meeting ended in a no contest. Fortune is a massive favorite at 7-1, and not surprisingly he’s a unanimous pick at 13-0.

Our fourth unanimous nod is [autotag]Usman Nurmagomedov[/autotag] (11-0 MMA, 0-0 BMMA), a cousin of former UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. The -800 favorite is a 13-0 pick from our staff members in his lightweight fight against [autotag]Mike Hamel[/autotag] (7-4 MMA, 0-1 BMMA).

And to open the main card, we have our only contentious fight from a picking standpoint. [autotag]Alejandra Lara[/autotag] (9-3 MMA, 3-2 BMMA) takes on [autotag]Kana Watanabe[/autotag] (9-0-1 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) in a women’s flyweight bout. Lara nearly is a 2-1 favorite, and she has an 8-5 lead in the picks.

In the MMA Junkie reader consensus picks, Freire (74 percent), Gracie (76 percent), Fortune (89 percent), Nurmagomedov (97 percent) and Watanabe (52 percent) are the choices.

Bellator 255 faceoff video highlights: Heavyweights get heated; Colombian butterfly appears

Check out the Bellator 255 main card competitors’ ceremonial faceoffs.

UNCASVILLE, Conn. – Bellator makes its Showtime debut Friday headlined by a fight that doubles as a featherweight title bout and a grand prix semifinal.

Bellator 255 takes place at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. The entire card will be live and free on MMA Junkie.

Following Thursday’s official Bellator 255 weigh-ins, the athletes came face to face for some traditional pre-fight staredowns.

Check out the faceoffs below, including Bellator featherweight and lightweight champion [autotag]Patricio Freire[/autotag] and challenger [autotag]Emmanuel Sanchez[/autotag], as well as co-headlining welterweights [autotag]Neiman Gracie[/autotag] and [autotag]Jason Jackson[/autotag].

Emmanuel Sanchez fine with being counted out at Bellator 255: ‘It’s the story of my career’

“He shouldn’t win. He can’t win. He won’t win.” But oftentimes, Emmanuel Sanchez does win.

UNCASVILLE, Conn. – [autotag]Emmanuel Sanchez[/autotag] has heard it all throughout the span of his professional mixed martial arts career.

He shouldn’t win. He can’t win. He won’t win.

But oftentimes, Sanchez (20-4 MMA, 12-3 BMMA) does win. Even when deemed improbable by the oddsmakers, Sanchez consistently displays new tricks, wears down opponents, and shows why fundamentals are important.

Entering his Bellator 255 title rematch with champion Patricio “Pitbull” Freire (31-4 MMA, 19-4 BMMA), the Roufusport product Sanchez knows many people are picking against him. It’s no different than usual – and he likes that.

“There’s no pressure on me,” Sanchez told MMA Junkie on Wednesday. “I’m the underdog. I’m expected to get killed and murdered and worse than the first time. Who knows whatever other people want to think and count me out? That’s fine. That’s been the story of my life and the story of my Bellator career thus far. There’s always going to be the bigger guy, the stronger guy, this guy, that guy. It’s all well and good. Shorter, tall, big, or small, they all will fall.”

Friday’s main event will the second time Sanchez gets a crack at Freire’s belt. At Bellator 209 in November 2018, Sanchez lost a unanimous decision to Freire in a back-and-forth fight. More than two years later, Sanchez thinks he’s sharpened up his game – contrary to recent comments made by Freire, which stated otherwise.

[lawrence-related id=599534]

“I’m going to really let it all loose in there and trust my instincts and believe in my greatness,” Sanchez said. “I know the first time it was a little more finding my potential, seeing, and almost feeling his power, his speed, his strength, his stamina, knowing that at that time, he was still champ-champ and one of the best. Now, he just went out to prove it, defeating Michael Chandler and becoming the lightweight champion, then, defending his title throughout this run that we’re on.”

Freire hasn’t lost since August 2016, but that doesn’t mean he’s unbeatable, according to Sanchez. For Freire’s recent grand prix performances, Sanchez was scouting from close by and he sees holes in the champion’s game that have not yet been exposed.

“I’ve had the pleasure of being cageside for all these fights that he’s recently had,” Sanchez said. “I still see those holes. I still see those openings that I know I can capitalize on. He’s faced great fighters that had the potential to beat him, but they didn’t have the style to beat him. I know I do.”

Bellator 255 takes place Friday at Mohegan Sun Arena. The entire card streams on MMA Junkie.

Bellator free fight: Patricio Freire knocks out Pedro Carvalho in grand prix quarterfinal

Bellator dual-champ Patricio Freire made quick work of Pedro Carvalho to advance to the featherweight grand prix semifinals.

Bellator dual-champ [autotag]Patricio Freire[/autotag] cruised to the featherweight grand prix semifinals.

Freire (31-4 MMA, 19-4 BMMA) put his featherweight title on the line against Pedro Carvalho in the grand prix quarterfinal at Bellator 252, which took place at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.

It didn’t take long for “Pitbull” to prove why he’s the champion, making quick work of Carvalho. With Carvalho pressing forward, Freire fired back with hard low kicks, looking to time the perfect counter shot. Freire eventually connected with a short right, but Carvalho weathered the storm. However, Freire proved to be too precise and sat Carvalho down with a big right hand just moments after, ending the fight in Round 1.

With the win, “Pitbull” moved on to the semifinals and will meet [autotag]Emmanuel Sanchez[/autotag] in the Bellator 255 main event on April 2, a rematch of their November 2018 bout which Freire won by unanimous decision.

Before Freire rematches Sanchez (20-4 MMA, 12-3 BMMA), relive his finish over Carvalho in the video above.
