Invicta FC champion Emily Ducote signs with UFC, fights Jessica Penne on Long Island

Emily Ducote didn’t want to be defined by her 2021 Knockout of the Year candidate – and now she has the chance to make new viral moments in the UFC.

Invicta FC strawweight champion [autotag]Emily Ducote[/autotag] is turning in her titleholder status for a pair of UFC gloves.

With [autotag]Brianna Fortino[/autotag] out of UFC on ABC 3 for undisclosed reasons, Ducote (11-6 MMA, 0-0 UFC) will step in to fight [autotag]Jessica Penne[/autotag] (14-5 MMA, 3-3 UFC) on approximately six weeks’ notice. The event takes place July 16 at UBS Arena in Elmwood, N.Y. with the main card airing on ABC.

Two people with knowledge of the booking confirmed the matchup Wednesday to MMA Junkie but asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement.

Ducote, 28, has won five of six outings since her Bellator departure in 2018 and subsequent drop down to 115 pounds. In August, she won the then-vacant Invicta FC strawweight championship with a Knockout of the Year headkick against former UFC fighter Danielle Taylor. She successfully defended her title for the first time in May when she defeated Alesha Zappitella by TKO due to doctor stoppage.

Penne, 39, is a former UFC women’s strawweight title challenger on a two-fight winning streak. Following a three-fight skid and a lengthy USADA suspension, Penne returned from hiatus in April 2021 and won back-to-back fights against Lupita Godinez and Karolina Kowalkiewicz.

With the addition, the UFC on ABC 3 lineup includes:

  • Brian Ortega vs. Yair Rodriguez
  • Askar Askarov vs. Alex Perez
  • Jack Shore vs. Ricky Simon
  • Amanda Lemos vs. Michelle Waterson
  • Bill Algeo vs. Billy Quarantillo
  • Li Jingliang vs. Muslim Salikhov

On the Doorstep: 5 fighters who could make UFC with May wins

For those who make it to the highest stage, the journey starts long before they strap on UFC or Bellator gloves.

Every champion in MMA history started out somewhere.

For those who make it to the highest stage, the journey begins long before they strap on UFC, Bellator, or PFL gloves. Modern-era fighters progress through the regional ranks with hopes of accomplishing the highest accolades. Many will try, few will succeed.

This month, five fighters on the verge of achieving major promotion notoriety – one for the second time – return to the cage for what could be their stepping stone fight. There are dozens of fighters close to making the jump in the coming weeks, but these five are particularly exemplary.

  • The Invicta FC strawweight champion already kicked her way into internet virality. Now she looks to secure her spot on a major promotional roster with a title defense.
  • Defying life’s hardships since a young age, a Brazilian is eager to capitalize on his first major opportunity for LFA – and utilize his platform to spread awareness of a rare skin condition.
  • The CFFC bantamweight champion had ups and downs en route to the belt but aims to show the UFC brass the final product is worth the wait.
  • A former Arena Football League player started MMA a bit later than most but is on an accelerated pace with a perfect finishing rate – something he hopes the UFC will recognize.
  •  If you’re looking for a scrap, look no further than the Georgia-born-and-raised fighter angling for a UFC deal against a former WSOF champ at Unified MMA 45.

Emily Ducote vs. Alesha Zappitella strawweight title fight headlines Invicta FC 47 on May 11

Emily Ducote will look to stop Alesha Zappitella from claiming a title in a second division when they meet in the Invicta FC 47 headliner.

Strawweight gold will be on the line at the next Invicta FC event as champion [autotag]Emily Ducote[/autotag] will meet challenger [autotag]Alesha Zappitella[/autotag] in the main event.

The promotion announced on Tuesday that Invicta FC 47 is scheduled for May 11, with Ducote (10-6) vs. Zappitella (9-3) serving as the headlining act. A location and venue have not been revealed.

Ducote, 28, will attempt to make her first title defense after claiming gold in spectacular fashion at Invicta FC 44 in August. The Bellator veteran is 4-1 over her past five, with her title-winning head kick of Danielle Taylor ranking among the best knockouts of the year in 2021.

Zappitella, 27, meanwhile, tries to make history by moving up in weight to challenge Ducote. The former Invicta FC atomweight champion lost the belt to Jessica Delboni in January after one title defense, and has now opted to shift divisions and chase a second championship with the promotion.

The latest Invicta FC 47 lineup includes:

  • Emily Ducote vs. Alesha Zappitella – for strawweight title
  • Chelsea Chandler vs. Courtney King
  • Jillian DeCoursey vs. Lindsey VanZandt
  • Serena DeJesus vs. Lisa Verzosa
  • Janaisa Morandin vs. Liana Pirosin
  • Jennifer Chieng vs. Alyssa Linduska

Video: Knockout of the Year? Emily Ducote freezes Danielle Taylor with punch, rips head kick to win gold

Did Emily Ducote notch a “Knockout of the Year” candidate at Invicta FC 44? You be the judge.

[autotag]Emily Ducote[/autotag] added a championship – and an all-time highlight – to her resume at Invicta FC 44.

One half of the main event, Ducote (10-6) flattened UFC alumnus [autotag]Danielle Taylor[/autotag] (11-6) with a violent two-strike finish to claim the promotion’s vacant strawweight title Friday.

The event took place at the Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kan. The main card aired on Fite TV pay-per-view following prelims on MMA Junkie.

The finishing sequence began with a hard overhand right from Ducote. Upon impact, Taylor, visibly stunned, froze while she remained on her feet. As she looked down, Taylor was met by a hellacious, fully-wound-up head kick from Ducote that floored her to the canvas – and like that, Ducote captured the vacant Invicta strawweight title.

Immediately after the win, the celebration began. Ducote, 27, bounced around the cage, audibly elated by her handiwork and title-earning accomplishment.

With the win, Ducote has now won three of her most recent four outings. In May, Ducote told MMA Junkie she was already on the UFC’s radar with her name in discussion for short-notice opportunities. As for Taylor, the shortest fighter to ever compete in the UFC (at 5’0″), falls to 2-2 since her promotional departure in 2018.
