WNBA fans made so many Ellie the Elephant jokes after the Liberty won its first championship

The New York Liberty are finally WNBA champions and of everyone most deserving of a ring, it’s definitely the one and only Ellie the Elephant.

The Liberty’s spirited and fiery mascot has been a fan-favorite of WNBA fans for some time now — between her dramatic personality and incredible outfits — but now that New York finally has won its first championship, basketball fans are clamoring for Ellie to get her due.

After Sunday’s win, Ellie was seen celebrating right alongside the Liberty, even falling to the court in joy after a hard-fought road to get to this point.

And as the confetti was raining down on the Liberty, WNBA fans couldn’t help but make jokes about Ellie the Elephant being a champion too.

New York Liberty mascot Ellie the Elephant and Minnesota Lynx mascot Prowl are beefing, and we can’t stop laughing.

It’s no secret that Ellie is the best WNBA mascot. Many have tried to come close to her aura (sorry, Skye, the Lioness) but haven’t even remotely been close. So, of course, with the WNBA Finals happening, Ellie stayed true to her brand and brought her A-game, including arriving in a custom jacket to show off during pregame tunnels.

Ellie’s seemingly high profile has caused Prowl, Minnesota’s mascot, to up its tactics. After a video surfaced of Ellie giving Courtney Williams’ dad some grief during a Finals game at Barclays, Prowl teamed up with Courtney’s father to rewatch the video and send Ellie a message to “bring it.”

Of course, Ellie had to respond with some hysterical next-level trolling.

Then, Prowl had something to say, and now there’s BEEF.

But it gets better (or worse, in Minnesota’s case). Liberty star Jonquel Jones seemingly had no idea Prowl existed.

UPDATE: After the Liberty won its first championship, the beef is seemingly over, and Ellie got the last laugh.

The New York Liberty got off to an early lead in Game 1 of the 2024 WNBA Finals before they even took the court.

The team’s beloved mascot, Ellie the Elephant, wore a fantastic custom jacket as she arrived at Thursday night’s game that read “Big Ellie” on the back.

Of course, Ellie the Elephant arrived with plenty of style and confidence, as she really is one of the best mascots in all of sports.

Whether the Liberty can win the title or not over the Minnesota Lynx is unknown, but Ellie the Elephant will win every time she shows up.

That’s just how elite mascots roll, after all.
