Saints go into Week 17 with their playoff hopes on the line

The Saints go into Week 17 with their playoff hopes on the line. A loss to the same Bucs team that beat them in September would end their season:

A year has passed since Dennis Allen’s team got defeated at Raymond James Stadium, but the New Orleans Saints (7-8) and Tampa Bay Buccaneers (8-7) are primed for a rematch that feels strikingly familiar.

Once again, the Saints’ playoff hopes are on the line when they kick off. A loss or tie to the same Buccaneers team that beat them 26-9 in October would eliminate New Orleans from the NFC South title race and clinch the division for Tampa Bay. Allen and his squad cannot afford to lose this game and keep selling fans a vision for a home playoff game.

What about the seventh NFC playoff seed? The Saints won’t be eliminated from that just by losing to the Bucs, but they’re already long shots, and a couple of other games’ results could take it off the board if they do come up short. If the Saints lose or tie this week, a Los Angeles Rams win or tie (who are visiting the New York Giants) as well as a Seattle Seahawks win or tie (they’re hosting the Pittsburgh Steelers) would knock out New Orleans.

So if you want to see the Saints advance to the postseason, like the players and coaches and team executives in the front office, here’s what you need to root for:

  • Saints win over Buccaneers (loss clinches NFC South for Tampa Bay)
  • Rams loss vs. Giants (Los Angeles win plus Seattle win plus Saints loss or tie eliminates New Orleans from playoffs)
  • Seahawks loss at Steelers (Seattle win plus Los Angeles win eliminates New Orleans from playoffs)

To put it more simply, a Saints loss plus a Rams win/tie and a Seahawks win/tie would eliminate New Orleans altogether.

It’s the most important game of the year after we said the same thing last week, when Allen’s crew fell flat on their face against Los Angeles (a well-coached wild-card team that’s gunning for the postseason themselves). There’s nothing to play for but pride if the Saints lose on Sunday. Let’s hope they at least express the sense of urgency that should come with that.

Here’s how the Packers can be eliminated before playing on Christmas

The Packers are in the playoff hunt, but elimination still looms large, and it could arrive before the team plays the Dolphins on Christmas if this scenario unfolds.

The Green Bay Packers got some help during the bye week and are now entering Week 15 with renewed hope of a late playoff push over the final four weeks of the 2022 season. Is it a long shot? Of course. But the Packers have a real chance of making it happen if Matt LaFleur’s team can win out against the Los Angeles Rams, Miami Dolphins, Minnesota Vikings and Detroit Lions.

There’s an ominous flip side to all this: the Packers are also dangerously close to being eliminated.

In fact, there’s a scenario where the Packers can be eliminated from playoff contention before the team kicks off against the Dolphins in Miami on Christmas Day, and it only requires three results.

Here’s what would need to happen:

– Giants win over Commanders (Week 15)
– Rams win over Packers (Week 15)
– Commanders win over 49ers (Week 16)

OR

– Commanders win over Giants (Week 15)
– Rams win over Packers (Week 15)
– Giants win over Vikings (Week 16)

In either scenario, the Packers would have nine losses and a best-case scenario of 8-9, while both the Giants and Commanders would have eight wins and the tie, ensuring they would finish ahead of the Packers for the final two wild-card spots.

The Giants, Seahawks and Commanders all play on Christmas Eve, so the Packers will know precisely where they stand by Christmas Day.

If this nightmare scenario unfolds, and the necessary results arrive over the next nine days, the Packers will go into Christmas in Miami with nothing to play for and a season lost before kickoff in Week 16.

Talk about finding coal in your stocking.

Here’s how the Packers could be eliminated from playoff contention by end of Week 15

At 5-8, the Packers are guaranteed only one more meaningful game. Four results over the next two weeks could mathematically eliminate Green Bay from playoff contention.

The Green Bay Packers are on a bye and cannot be eliminated from playoff contention during Week 14. However, Matt LaFleur’s 5-8 team is only guaranteed one more meaningful game at this point.

Earlier Friday, we highlighted one possible path to the postseason for the Packers. Now, it’s time for the flipside: here’s how the Packers can be eliminated from postseason contention by the end of Week 15.

The Packers will be eliminated if the following results happen over the next two weeks:

– Week 14: Giants beat Eagles
– Week 14: Seahawks beat Panthers
– Week 15: Seahawks beat 49ers
– Week 15: Rams beat Packers

If the first three results happen, the Packers will go into “Monday Night Football” on Dec. 19 facing an elimination game. For all intents and purposes, all remaining games are elimination games for the Packers. But it can become official as soon as the end of Week 15.

This is important because the Packers will have a decision to make the second they are mathematically eliminated from the playoffs: Will Aaron Rodgers or Jordan Love start at quarterback?

Following the visit from the Rams, the Packers finish the 2022 season with games against the Dolphins, Vikings and Lions.

It’s possible, if four results happen over the next two weeks, that the Packers will need to make a big decision at quarterback for the final three games of 2022.
