CU Buffs, Phil McGeoghan land first WR of 2023 class

Edward Schultz announced his commitment to CU

The Colorado Buffaloes football program has been shaken up over and over again, both in the transfer portal and with the coaching staff.

But, they did land Phil McGeoghan as the team’s new wide receivers coach, and the veteran is already doing work after making a bold promise.

It didn’t take long for McGeoghan to secure his first 2023 recruit with three-star wideout Edward Schultz, who announced his commitment to CU on Friday. This is the first big get of the 2023 class for McGeoghan, and many more should come with the impressive resume he brings to the table.

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Schultz hails from San Juan Capistrano, California, and is ranked No. 125 nationally at his position per 247Sports. He had also been offered by Utah, Florida State, Minnesota, Texas A&M and a few other Power 5 schools.

Schultz posted this message on Twitter:

The Buffs lost a ton of players in the transfer portal, especially at the WR position, including Brenden Rice, Dimitri Stanley, La’Vontae Shenault and Keith Miller III.

But, they did get Baylor transfer R.J. Sneed II, so that helps.

Nonetheless, this is a step in the right direction for Karl Dorrell’s program after losing a fair deal of talent over the past couple of months.

Sooners offer 2023 WR Edward Schultz as Sooners slowly shift their offensive recruiting efforts to 2023

Edward Schultz of California receives an offer from Cale Gundy and DeMarco Murray.

While the Sooners coaching staff has a few more 2022 recruits they are hoping to add, they have already taken the time to start getting serious about the 2023 class. A recruiting class that was No. 1 in the country has seen a massive exodus in the last couple of weeks since Lincoln Riley’s exit.

Malachi Nelson (consensus top-10 player), Makai Lemon, Brandon Inniss, Trayaun Webb and Luke Hasz decommitted while Oklahoma was shopping for its next head coach. Lemon, rated by 247Sports as the number two athlete in the country and a five-star prospect, flipped his commitment to USC along with teammate and best friend Nelson after Riley became the head coach of the Trojans. Inniss, Webb and Hasz remain uncommitted as of now.

So what did the Sooners go and do? They went back to California, of course, for another wide receiver, extending an offer to Edward Schultz of J Serra Catholic. Schultz is currently unranked on 247Sports, but with Cale Gundy and DeMarco Murray as his recruiters, it’s a fair bet to suggest those eyes trust what they see.

Schultz touts offers from Florida State and San Jose State as well. He plays in a highly competitive California high school league and even returned a 91-yard kickoff for a touchdown against national power Mater Dei.

There’s a mighty long way to go from the early signing period in 2021 to national signing day in 2023. An entire spring, summer and senior season will allow players to rise and fall through the rankings. For now, we’re sitting back and watching these offers go out and will react and respond accordingly.
