Edmonton Oilers at Calgary Flames Game 5 odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Thursday’s Edmonton Oilers at Calgary Flames Game 5 odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames meet for Game 5 of their Western Conference Semifinals playoff series Thursday at Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta. The Oilers lead the series 3-1. Puck drop is scheduled for 9:30 p.m. ET (ESPN). Below, we look at the Oilers vs. Flames Game 5 odds and lines, and make our expert NHL picks, predictions and bets.

The Oilers won both games at home to take a commanding 3-1 series lead, forcing their rivals to have to win 3 straight games to keep their season alive. Edmonton lost 9-6 in Game 1 but won Game 2 in Calgary by a 5-3 count.

The Flames allowed just 14 total goals to the Dallas Stars across 7 games in the first round, but they have been very giving in this series. Calgary has allowed at least 4 goals in each game, with a grand total of 20 goals yielded so far.

Oilers at Flames odds and lines

Odds provided by Tipico Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated at 8 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Oilers +125 (bet $100 to win $125) | Flames -155 (bet $155 to win $100)
  • Against the spread (ATS): Oilers +1.5 (-180) | Flames -1.5 (+140)
  • Over/Under (O/U): 6.5 (O: -120 | U: -105)

Oilers at Flames projected goalies

Mike Smith (7-3-0, 2.60 GAA, .931 SV%, 2 SO – postseason) vs. Jacob Markstrom (5-6-0, 2.78 GAA, .906 SV%, 1 SO – postseason)

Smith had a little bit of a brain cramp late in Game 4, losing track of a puck on a clearing attempt on the penalty kill for the Flames. Instead, D Rasmus Andersson tied the game. Smith has actually been better than Markstrom in this series outside of that miscue.

Markstrom was a brick wall in the Dallas series, but he has been more like a chain link fence in this one as he has allowed 4 or more goals in every game.

Oilers at Flames picks and predictions

Prediction

Flames 5, Oilers 4

Money line

The FLAMES (-155) have their backs up against the wall, and I expect they’ll come out with some fire, pun totally intended. The home crowd should spur on the Flames, as they force this one back to Edmonton Saturday.

Against the spread

The OILERS +1.5 (-180) are a little on the expensive side, but this price isn’t too out of line if you don’t like Edmonton straight up and want a little insurance. Edmonton has covered the puck line in 3 of the 4 games to date.

Over/Under

OVER 6.5 (-120) is the lean in this Game 5.

The Under would normally be the play in an elimination game, especially between bitter rivals, but the Flames have shown no signs of slowing down the Oilers’ offense. If Calgary is to win, they will need to ramp up its scoring, and similar to Game 1 that’s exactly what they’ll do.

Edmonton Oilers at Calgary Flames Game 1 odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s Edmonton Oilers at Calgary Flames Game 1 odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames meet for Game 1 of their Western Conference Semifinals playoff series Wednesday at Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary. Puck drop is scheduled for 9:30 p.m. ET (ESPN). Below, we look at the Oilers vs. Flames Game 1 odds and lines, and make our expert NHL picks, predictions and bets.

The Oilers were staring elimination in the face after a Game 5 overtime loss at home to the Los Angeles Kings but bounced back with a 4-2 road win in Game 6 and a 2-0 Game 7 shutout win thanks to G Mike Smith.

The Flames set up the Battle of Alberta showdown with an overtime victory over the Dallas Stars in Game 7 of their opening series. The entire series was a defensive showdown with 29 combined goals, of which Calgary managed 15.

Oilers at Flames odds and lines

Odds provided by Tipico Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated at 7:33 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Oilers +133 (bet $100 to win $133) | Flames -165 (bet $165 to win $100)
  • Against the spread (ATS): Oilers +1.5 (-180) | Flames -1.5 (+140)
  • Over/Under (O/U): 6.5 (O: +100 | U: -125)

Oilers at Flames projected goalies

Mike Smith (4-3-0, 2.29 GAA, .938 SV%, 2 SO – postseason) vs. Jacob Markstrom (4-3-0, 1.53 GAA, .943 SV%, 1 SO – postseason)

Smith allowed a total of 8 goals on 88 shots in Games 4 and 5, both losses against the Kings. However, he saved his best for last, allowing 2 goals on 32 shots in a road win at L.A. in Game 6, and then he made all 29 saves in a Game 7 shutout.

Markstrom battled with G Jake Oettinger of the Dallas Stars, as the series legitimately could have gone either way. Calgary was lucky to have Game 7 on home ice. He also saved his best for last, allowing just 2 goals on 28 shots in a 3-2 OT win.

[tipico]

Oilers at Flames picks and predictions

Prediction

Flames 4, Oilers 3

Money line

The FLAMES (-165) are moderate favorites in the first round of the Battle of Alberta. The home team won each of the 4 regular-season meetings, so why stop siding with the home side now? Calgary has won 4 of its last 5 home meetings against Edmonton, too.

Against the spread

The OILERS +1.5 (-180) are a little on the expensive side, but they’re the play on the road. There won’t be a lot of lopsided games in this series, and you can expect both teams to fight for every inch.

Over/Under

OVER 6.5 (+100) is the lean despite Markstrom’s amazing performance in the Dallas series. While he yielded just 11 total goals in 7 games against the Stars, he was 2-2-0 with a 3.54 GAA and .884 SV% in 4 regular-season games against the Oilers. They know him, and he’ll allow quite a bit more than the Dallas offense was able to score.

Edmonton Oilers at Calgary Flames odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Monday’s Edmonton Oilers at Calgary Flames odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Edmonton Oilers (30-22-4) visit the Calgary Flames (33-14-7) Monday at Scotiabank Saddledome. Puck drop is scheduled for 9:30 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we look at the Oilers vs. Flames odds and lines, and make our expert NHL picks, predictions and bets.

The Oilers haven’t been terribly slick lately, dropping their last two games to the Montreal Canadiens (5-2 Saturday) and Chicago Blackhawks (4-3 Thursday), while posting a 2-4-1 record across their last seven outings.

The first-place Flames bounced back from Thursday’s 5-4 overtime setback against the Canadiens for a 4-3 OT win at the Colorado Avalanche as the Over cashed Saturday. The Over is 8-3 across the past 11 for the Flames.

Oilers at Flames odds, spread and lines

Odds provided by Tipico Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated at 7:40 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Oilers +155 (bet $100 to win $155) | Flames -190 (bet $190 to win $100)
  • Against the spread (ATS): Oilers +1.5 (-160) Flames -1.5 (+125)
  • Over/Under (O/U): 6.5 (O: -102 | U: -122)

Oilers at Flames projected goalies

Mikko Koskinen (19-8-3, 3.05 GAA, .904 SV%, 1 SO) vs. Jacob Markstrom (25-11-6, 2.17 GAA, .925 SV%, 8 SO)

Koskinen has not lost in regulation in his past nine starts, going 7-0-2. That includes his most recent showing against the Flames Jan. 22 when he allowed 3 goals on 47 shots.

Markstrom had a rare poor outing last time in the crease Thursday, coughing up 5 goals on 35 shots in a 5-4 OT loss against the Habs. He is 0-2-0 with a 4.07 GAA and .871 SV% in two starts against the provincial rival Oilers this season.

Oilers at Flames odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Oilers 4, Flames 3

Money line

The OILERS (+155) are worth playing based upon the struggles of the Flames in this series in recent seasons. Edmonton has won eight of the last 11 meetings overall.

Edmonton is also 13-3 in the past 16 inside the division, while cashing in 21 of its last 31 games overall against Western Conference foes.

Against the spread

If you’d like a little insurance, the OILERS +1.5 (-160) isn’t terribly overpriced.

The favorite is 16-7 in the past 23 meetings, with the home side 5-1 in the past six in the series. Playing the visitors on the puck line might be more up your alley if you don’t like Edmonton straight up.

Over/Under

The OVER 6.5 (-102) is worth playing lightly based on the series trends, with the Over 5-2 in the last seven meetings at the Saddledome. The Over is also 6-2-1 in the past nine games overall for Calgary and 6-1-2 in its previous nine against winning sides. However, the Under is 11-4-2 in the past 17 for the Oilers against winning teams, so be careful.

Edmonton Oilers at Calgary Flames odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Friday’s Edmonton Oilers at Calgary Flames NHL odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Edmonton Oilers (10-8-0) visit the Calgary Flames (8-7-1) Friday for a 9 p.m. ET puck drop. Below we analyze the Oilers-Flames NHL odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Oilers at Flames: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 5:06 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Oilers +105 (bet $100 to win $105) | Flames -125 (bet $125 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Oilers +1.5 (-250) | Flames -1.5 (+200)
  • Over/Under: 6.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Oilers at Flames: Projected starting goalies

Mikko Koskinen (6-8-0, 3.43 GAA, .894 SV%) at Jacob Markstrom (8-5-1, 2.61 GAA, .918 SV%, 2 SO)

The Oilers got a nice outing from G Mike Smith last time out, but Koskinen remains the top dog in Edmonton for now. Koskinen has allowed two or fewer goals in three of his four appearances in February, and he has a pair of wins in his three starts in the month. After a rough start to the season, Koskinen finally looks to be turning things around. However, he did allow six goals on 28 shots in a 6-4 loss at Calgary in his most recent showing against the Flames.

Markstrom coughed up five goals on 29 shots in his most recent showing, and he was pulled in the third period in favor of G David Rittich. Markstrom was making his sixth appearance of the season against the Canucks, his old team, and he was due for a stinker. Look for the Flames to turn back to Markstrom for the Battle of Alberta. He allowed four goals on 32 shots in a 6-4 win Feb. 6 at home against the Oilers in his only appearance in the rivalry to date.

Oilers at Flames: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Flames 5, Oilers 3

Money line (ML)

The FLAMES (-125) are the play on their home ice in the front end of this home-and-home with the Oilers. The favorite has cashed in nine of the past 12 meetings in this series, and Calgary has won five of its past seven at home against Edmonton. In fact, the Oilers are just 1-4 in the past five meetings overall in this series, as their rivals have had their number lately.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The FLAMES -1.5 (+200) are a tempting play on home ice, and worth a small-unit play despite the fact these games tend to be high-scoring and usually very close. It’s also a risky play with Calgary coming off a 5-1 loss last time out on home ice against Vancouver. In addition, just one of the Flames’ past three wins are by more than one goal, although they did win 6-4 in the first meeting with the Oilers. However, a low-risk, small bet is warranted, as a chance to double up is just too tough to pass up.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 6.5 (-110) is risky business, especially since the Flames are 3-1-1 to the Under in the past five outings, and 5-2-1 in the previous eight. However, one of those Over results was against the Oilers Feb. 6. The Under is also 4-1 for Calgary in the previous five. I don’t love 6.5 total lines, especially when playing the Over, but the Over is 4-0-1 in the past five meetings and 18-7-1 in the past 26 in Calgary.

Edmonton Oilers at Calgary Flames odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Saturday’s Edmonton Oilers at Calgary Flames NHL odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Edmonton Oilers (6-6-0) travel to meet the Calgary Flames (4-5-1)  Saturday at Scotiabank Saddledome for a 10 p.m. ET puck drop Saturday. Below, we analyze the Oilers-Flames NHL odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Oilers at Flames: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 12:20 p.m. ET.

  • Money line: Oilers +110 (bet $100 to win $110) | Flames -130 (bet $130 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Oilers +1.5 (-240) | Flames -1.5 (+195)
  • Over/Under: 6.5 (O: -115 | U: -105)

Oilers at Flames: Projected starting goalies

Mikko Koskinen (5-6-0, .897 SV%, 3.31 GAA) vs. Jacob Markstrom (4-3-1, .920 SV%, 2.37 GAA, 2 SO)

Koskinen has been up and down, but lately it’s been all up. He enters the game with consecutive wins for the first time this season, including 23 saves on 25 shots in a 4-2 win over the Ottawa Senators last time out. This is the first of 10 meetings between these provincial rivals this season. Koskinen was 0-2-0 with a 4.16 GAA and .877 SV% in two starts and a relief appearances vs. CGY last season.

Markstrom has already posted two shutouts, although he has allowed three or more goals in four of his past five outings. The Flames haven’t really provided him with adequate offensive support lately, scoring just 2.4 goals per game over his five starts. Markstrom went 2-2-0 with a .908 SV% and 2.54 GAA in three starts vs. EDM as a member of the Vancouver Canucks last season.

Oilers at Flames: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Flames 5, Oilers 3

Money line (ML)

The FLAMES (-130) have owned this series in recent seasons, winning seven of the past 10 meetings. The favorite is also 8-3 across the past 11.

Given Markstrom’s solid showing last season against the Oilers, and Koskinen’s struggles against the Flames last season, it’s a good bet Calgary continues to burn its rival.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The FLAMES -1.5 (+195) are worth a small-unit play, as you can nearly double up your initial stake, and that’s always attractive. Three of Calgary’s four wins have come by two or more goals.

In fact, their winning margin is 2.3 goals per game, with three wins in regulation by a total of eight goals with one shootout victory.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 6.5 (-115) is 3-0-1 in the past four meetings in this series, and 9-3-1 in the past 13 meetings in Calgary. Couple that with the fact the Over is an impressive 5-1 across the past six for the Oilers, and the Over is a great play in this Battle of Alberta.
