Boost for Gio? Terzic steps down as Dortmund head coach

The coach never seemed to fully trust the USMNT midfielder

Edin Terzić has stepped down as Borussia Dortmund head coach after two years in charge.

The move comes less than two weeks after Dortmund fell to Real Madrid in the Champions League final.

Bild has reported that ex-Dortmund midfielder Nuri Şahin, who served as an assistant under Terzić, is the clear favorite to take over as the club’s head coach.

“Edin Terzić leaves Borussia Dortmund. The coach, who won the DFB Cup with BVB in 2021, finished runner-up in the 2023 championship and reached the 2024 Champions League final, asked BVB to terminate his contract with immediate effect,” a club statement read.

“Borussia Dortmund agreed to the request after a joint discussion.”

Terzic added: “I feel that the club’s new era should begin with a new man on the touchline.”

The news could potentially be a boost to Gio Reyna, who will return to Dortmund ahead of the 2024-25 season after a disappointing loan spell at Nottingham Forest.

Terzić never seemed to fully trust Reyna, who started just two games for Dortmund in the first half of the season before a midseason switch to Forest.

Terzić was reportedly unsatisfied with Reyna’s defensive effort, saying last year that “Gio still has many aspects to work on to become a more complete player.”

For his part, Reyna told The Athletic this week that he was unsure if he would stay at Dortmund in the upcoming season or look for a new club once again.

“There’s been discussions and I’m not quite sure what’s going to happen,” Reyna said. “I just want to go somewhere that is at the highest possible level, but still play an important role, get consistent minutes and be an important player for any team, whether it’s at Dortmund or somewhere else.

“I’m just looking for the right fit for me, playing at a high level and a club that wants me — where I feel valued.”

Reyna returns to training with Borussia Dortmund

The USMNT star is back on the training pitch for the first time this season

Borussia Dortmund head coach Edin Terzić confirmed that Gio Reyna has returned to training for the first time this season.

Reyna has been battling a lingering calf injury that he suffered with the U.S. national team in June, when he was forced off at halftime of the CONCACAF Nations League final.

The 20-year-old American has been forced to miss the entirety of Dortmiund’s preseason as well as its first two regular season matches.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of Saturday’s Bundesliga match at VfL Bochum, Terzić said that Reyna was back training with his teammates, though he could only participate in some parts.

“Gio Reyna is on the pitch for the first time today and can participate in parts of training,” Terzić said.

Reyna’s return to training this week could be viewed as something of a pleasant surprise. Prior to Saturday’s Bundesliga opener at FC Köln, Terzić said he was hopeful the American could be back on the pitch within two weeks.

“Gio is OK, but Gio is not game ready at the minute, so he didn’t train with the team,” Terzić said. “So we hope that he can join us next week or the week after.

“He’s on a good way, he’s doing his running program. He’s working on his fitness level. And now we hope that he’s going to be pain free and that he can help us.”

Reyna scored a career-high seven Bundesliga goals last season despite only making four league starts.

Terzic hopeful Reyna can rejoin training within two weeks

It sounds like the USMNT attacker will miss at least another game or two

Borussia Dortmund head coach Edin Terzić has said he’s hopeful that Gio Reyna can return to training within the next two weeks.

Reyna has missed Dortmund’s first two games of the season as he continues to battle a calf injury suffered with the U.S. national team in June’s CONCACAF Nations League final.

The attacker, who has dealt with fitness issues for a significant portion of his stint with Dortmund, was forced to miss the team’s entire preseason as well as matches in the DFB-Pokal and Bundesliga.

Terzić spoke to ESPN prior to Saturday’s Bundesliga opener, which Dortmund would win 1-0 over FC Köln.

The coach was non-committal over exactly how long the 20-year-old would be sidelined, indicating the attacker would miss at least another match or two.

Dortmund will return to action on Saturday with a Bundesliga match at VfL Bochum.

Reyna’s injury woes continue as USMNT star ruled out of Bundesliga opener

The USMNT attacker is still fighting off a calf injury suffered in June

Gio Reyna has been ruled out of Borussia Dortmund’s Bundesliga opener this weekend due to an ongoing calf injury.

Reyna suffered the injury in June’s CONCACAF Nations League final against Canada, getting two assists before leaving at halftime after a tough tackle from an opponent. The United States would go on to win 2-0.

Two months later, the 20-year-old has yet to fully recover. He missed Dortmund’s entire preseason and its regular season opener last week, a 6-1 DFB-Pokal win against Schott Mainz.

In a press conference ahead of Saturday’s league opener against FC Köln, head coach Edin Terzić said the USMNT attacker has yet to recover.

“[Julien] Duranville, Reyna and [Thomas] Meunier are definitely out,” Terzić said. “There are question marks with Felix Nmecha and Karim Adeyemi, but there we are confident that it could work out for Saturday.”

Reyna has suffered through various injury issues during his time with Dortmund, though he managed to stay healthy throughout most of last season after being brought along slowly in the early going.

As the campaign wore on, however, Reyna found himself struggling for minutes due to the stellar form of the attackers above him on the depth chart. Still, he made the most of his opportunities by scoring a career-best seven league goals, despite only getting four starts all season.

Reyna came off the bench in Dortmund’s season finale against Mainz, grabbing two assists as his side agonizingly fell short of a Bundesliga title with a 2-2 draw in a game they needed to win.

Dortmund boss Terzic provides Reyna injury update

It sounds like Reyna may not be back in training for a little while yet

It sounds like Gio Reyna may not be back on the training pitch for Borussia Dortmund for a little while yet.

The club’s head coach Edin Terzić offered updates on Reyna and several other injured players after Wednesday’s 7-0 preseason-opening win over fifth-tier Westfalia Rhynern.

When asked about Karim Adeyemi, Youssoufa Moukoko and Felix Nmecha, Terzić told Dortmund’s official website: “Five players are not yet completely fit.

“The aforementioned trio are joined by Jamie Bynoe-Gittens and Gio Reyna, who unfortunately got injured with their national teams.”

Reyna was injured last month in the CONCACAF Nations League final, a game in which he provided both assists as the U.S. defeated Canada 2-0.

Speaking after the match, interim head coach B.J. Callaghan said he didn’t know the severity of the injury, only saying that it was a calf issue.

Nearly a month later there still haven’t been many updates on Reyna’s injury, but Terzić did not include the USMNT star in a list of players he was hoping to see in training next week.

“The lads are on a good path,” the coach added. “Four of them will be on the training pitch tomorrow and then we hope to have them all fit by the end of preseason at the latest. In Karim, Youssoufa and Felix’s case, we hope that they will already be able to participate fully in team training next week.”

Dortmund is set to continue its preseason in the United States later this month, as it has matches scheduled against Premier League giants Manchester United and Chelsea, as well as USL Championship side San Diego Loyal.

Terzic: Reyna ‘not making it easy for me’ with goals off the bench

The USMNT attacker leads the Bundesliga in goals per 90 minutes

Borussia Dortmund manager Edin Terzić has said Gio Reyna’s consistent goalscoring off the bench is giving him the proverbial problem every coach wants to have.

Reyna has started just one game since the World Cup but has scored in five of his 10 substitute appearances since the Bundesliga restarted in January.

The 20-year-old scored again in Saturday’s 5-2 win over Borussia Mönchengladbach, taking his average to 1.06 goals per 90 minutes — best in the Bundesliga among players with more than 500 minutes.

Dortmund, which is just one point behind first-place Bayern with two games to go, has won 13 of 17 games since the World Cup. With attackers like Donyell Malen, Julian Brandt, Karim Adeyemi and others firing on all cylinders, Reyna’s lack of minutes has more to do with the successes of others rather than his own failures.

Speaking after the win over Gladbach, Terzić said that the USMNT attacker continues to push the players ahead of him.

“Gio in particular is not making it easy for me to always only be bringing him on [from the bench],” the coach said. “He pushes the others every day. We want to have that performance mindset in the team. Karim and Donny know that they need to keep stepping on the gas.”

Overall, Reyna has scored a career-high seven Bundesliga goals this season, despite starting just four games in the league.

Edin Terzic is ready for Dortmund to once again lose a superstar

“Last year it was Erling, the year before it was Jadon”

Edin Terzić seems to be embracing the inevitable.

The Borussia Dortmund head coach has been around the club for some time; first as a scout, then an assistant coach, interim manager and finally, his current position which he assumed ahead of this season.

Terzić has therefore seen plenty of players rise to prominence at the club before being sold on for a massive fee.

Jude Bellingham seems to be the next in line, with Marca reporting this week that Real Madrid’s move for the England international midfielder is almost done.

Los Blancos will reportedly pay between €100 million and €120 million for Bellingham.

Ahead of his title-chasing side’s game against Wolfsburg on Sunday, Terzić addressed the speculation around the 19-year-old. While he didn’t confirm anything had been done, the coach did mention two other ex-Dortmund stars who have left in recent years.

“Now the news comes from Spain, before that it came from England, before that it even came from France at one point,” the coach said at a press conference. “Last year it was Erling [Haaland], the year before it was Jadon [Sancho].  We’ve had a lot of experience with that over the last few years.

“Jude comes here every day and gives everything to become German champion at the end of the season. I haven’t even heard from him that he’s involved with any club. We are much more concerned with how we can make him and the team better. That’s the only topic I currently have with him. The rest are topics that have no place in the dressing room or in the manager’s office. All we are concerned with now is making sure we have something really nice to holds in our hands at the end of the season.”

Gio Reyna will miss massive Bayern Munich clash with illness

The attacker misses out after starting both games for the USMNT over the international break

The Bundesliga title race may well come down to Saturday’s massive game between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich.

But unfortunately for Gio Reyna, he won’t be able to play a part.

At his pre-match press conference on Friday, Dortmund manager Edin Terzić confirmed the American was sick and would miss Der Klassiker at Allianz Arena.

“Unfortunately, Gio Reyna and Thomas Meunier will be out. Gio has a cold and has been lying flat since yesterday. Thomas Meunier complains of back problems and had to stop training yesterday,” Terzić said.

There was some positive injury news for Dortmund as well, with Terzić confirming Gregor Kobel and Julian Brandt will be fit for the game, while Karim Adeyemi and Youssoufa Moukoko will be game-time decisions.

The already-huge game became even more intriguing when Bayern surprisingly sacked Julian Nagelsmann over the international break and replaced him with ex-Dortmund coach Thomas Tuchel.

Terzić admitted the move left him and his staff scrambling somewhat, saying that it “obviously changed our preparation a little bit” for the game.

“We don’t know how much Thomas Tuchel will continue on with what Julian Nagelsmann did in the last few weeks, or whether he brings in completely new ideas,” Terzić added.

“But what hasn’t changed is that they still have a top manager on the bench and a top team on the field.”

Dortmund enters the match in first place, just one point ahead of Bayern in second.

Terzic tells Reyna to be patient amid spell on the bench

The USMNT star has started just one game in 2023

Borussia Dortmund manager Edin Terzic has told Gio Reyna that he’ll have to be patient as he goes through a spell with limited playing time.

Reyna has started just one game for Dortmund in 2023 and hasn’t got off the bench at all in back-to-back Bundesliga matches.

The U.S. national team attacker has still managed to make a major impact for Dortmund in his limited minutes, scoring goals in three straight appearances off the bench in late January and early February.

But with Dortmund on a run of nine straight wins in all competitions, Terzic has been reluctant to change things up and give Reyna more playing time. The likes of Karim Adeyemi, Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, Julian Brandt, Donyell Malen and Marco Reus have all been preferred to the American attacker in recent matches.

That doesn’t seem likely to change any time soon, as Terzic said in his press conference ahead of Friday’s game against RB Leipzig. It sounds like Reyna’s recent history of injuries is also playing a role.

“Gio has always suffered [injury] setbacks, he was injured once with the national team,” Terzic said. “He has made a few short appearances, played from the start against Bremen, and had no playing time in the last three games. He knows what we expect from him. But we also know what he can give us. He has to be diligent and patient.”

Dortmund is currently second in the Bundesliga table, trailing Bayern Munich only on goal difference. Union Berlin is three points back in third place, with RB Leipzig and Freiburg also in the mix.

Terzic said that tight race is a refreshing change of pace after several years of Bayern running away with the title.

“The table is extremely exciting, both below and above [us],” he said. “We proved that we can win against anyone. If we manage to consistently get our quality onto the pitch, a lot is possible.”
