Watch: Clemson fans send off women’s soccer team ahead of College Cup

The Clemson women’s soccer team is off to Cary, North Carolina, for the College Cup semifinal game against Florida State.

The Clemson community gathered at the Tigers’ soccer practice facility on Wednesday to help send off the Clemson women’s soccer team as it embarks on a trip to Cary, North Carolina, for the semifinals of the College Cup.

The Tigers (18-3-4) are set to take on the Florida State Seminoles (20-0-1) at 6 p.m. on Friday. If Clemson wins, it will advance to the national championship game for the first time in program history. That goal, however, comes with a significant challenge against the Seminoles.

Florida State defeated the Tigers in both matchups this season, including the ACC Championship game when the Seminoles won 2-1.

That said, Clemson head coach Eddie Radwanski is confident in his group to come away with a win against Florida State head coach Brian Pensky and the Seminoles.

“I don’t think that either Brian’s team or my team are going to surprise each other with an awful lot,” Radwanski said on Monday. “We know that we’ve had very good games with them, it’s been exciting to watch. It’s been competitive, and now we get another opportunity to play them in the national semifinals.”

Clemson earns a No. 1 seed in NCAA Tournament

The Clemson women’s soccer team earned a No. 1 seed in this year’s NCAA Tournament.

The Clemson women’s soccer team earned a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, the NCAA announced during its selection show on Monday.

After coming up short in the ACC Championship game on Sunday, the Tigers will host Radford at Historic Riggs Field in the first round of the Women’s College Cup. First-round action will be played from Nov. 10 to Nov. 12, according to the NCAA’s website. The second and third rounds will be played on Nov. 17 and Nov. 19.

Clemson (15-3-3) lost to Florida State in the ACC Championship game, falling to the Seminoles 2-1 in a tight contest between two of the top teams in the country. This season marked the first time Clemson made the ACC Championship game since 2002. Florida State had previously handed the Tigers one of their only two losses in the regular season, the other coming against Notre Dame. Florida State also earned a No. 1 seed as the conference champion.

With the loss behind them, the Tigers will now look to win the national championship and will have a home-field advantage on their side.

No.19 Clemson defeats Utah 1-0 on the road

Clemson women’s soccer handled business on the road against Utah.

Salt Lake City, Utah – The Clemson Tigers took down Utah 1-0 as Makenna Morris sealed the victory with a lone goal and goalkeeper Halle Mackiewicz recorded her fourth clean sheet.

“This is a very good win for us. You’re on the road, there’s elevation and adjustments that they have to do and our group was up for the challenge,” Head Coach Eddie Radwanski said. “Utah is a Pac-12 school, it’s one of the better conferences in soccer and I thought we did a really good job of disrupting their rhythm.”

Neither team had many chances in the first half, with Clemson recording the lone shot on goal, taken by Sydney Minaik and saved by the Utah keeper in the 33’. Much like on Thursday at Utah Valley, the Tigers broke the scoreless draw early in the second half, as Makenna Morris netted her second goal of the season in the 51’ to give Clemson the 1-0 lead.

“We were going into the second half and we were like, let’s bring some pressure to them and Sami got a great touch and I was there for the deflection,” Morris said. “I’m just happy for our team, we were able to keep the pressure up and keep the ball moving.”

The Tigers continued to put pressure on the Utes, with Dani Davis forcing a Utah save in the 66′, and Emma Wennar forcing another in the 81’. Utah’s only chance came in the 85’, but Halle Mackewicz made the save to keep the clean sheet.

Following this win, Mackiewicz has recorded four clean sheets in a row and keeps her save percentage at a perfect 1.000. The senior tabbed one save against the Utes to bring her total save count to seven for the season.

“Playing defense, playing in the midfield and just knowing she’s back there we just know she is going to come up with some big saves and in both games she came up in big time moments,” Morris said. “She is someone we always have trust in and she has proven it, four donuts on the season and we are just getting started.”

Up next, the Tigers will be back at Riggs to start a three-game homestand. On Thursday, they will face-off against Furman and then will wrap up the weekend by hosting Western Carolina.

Tigers and Gamecocks draw in Clemson women’s soccer season home opener

The Tigers and Gamecocks battled in Clemson’s home opener of the 2023 season.

CLEMSON, S.C. – Clemson Women’s Soccer battled nationally ranked South Carolina in the season home opener on Thursday at Riggs Field to earn a 0-0 draw against the Gamecocks.

“Today was extremely positive. It was a great crowd, great atmosphere and it was an excellent game. I thought we played really quite well,” Head Coach Eddie Radwanski said. “We are just unfortunate that we didn’t stick one in but that can happen in our game but I have no reservations about our commitment, our effort, our work ethic and the quality of our play. It’s the first game of the season, I think we are going to be okay and it’s not an easy game to play when you get two rivals and two nationally ranked teams competing against each other. For me, I’m leaving the field with a good feeling.”

The Tigers came out strong on the pitch and held control of the ball for majority of the game as they finished the match with 63% possession in comparison to the Gamecocks 37% total. Multiple Tigers had solid scoring opportunities as graduate Caroline Conti tallied up three shots on goal and senior Megan Bornkamp had three total shot attempts.

Freshmans Tatum Short, Jenna Tobia and Dani Davis all started for the Tigers as that marked their first collegiate game in the Clemson uniform.

A key player for the Tigers was Goalkeeper Halle Mackiewicz, who wrapped up the match with her first clean sheet of the season. The senior recorded two saves against the Gamecocks.

“I think it’s all about confidence, we have so much confidence in her and in the air she is a complete dog,” Conti said. “Dog is the word for this year and she was a dog today.”

The final attendance for the home opener was 3,719 fans, which is the highest recorded crowd since the Tigers hosted the Gamecocks in September of 2017.

Up next, the Tigers host Gardner-Webb on Sunday, August 20th at Historic Riggs Field. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. and will be streamed live on ACCNX.
