Cowboys officially bring Carl Lawson on board, send Bostick to IR

Dallas was expected to sign free agent defensive end Carl Lawson and the move was finally made official. A former fourth-round pick in the 2017 NFL draft by the Bengals, Lawson is expected to help fill the void of DE Sam Williams who was lost for the season with a torn ACL.

In his first four seasons in Cincinnati, Lawson started 14 games recording 21 sacks and 83 QB hits. That was enough for the Jets to sign him to a three-year, $45 million deal.

In New York, Lawson started all 17 games logging 7 sacks with 24 QB hits. His second season didn’t go as planned. A back injury in training camp limited him to just six games in 2022 and he finished the year by being a gameday inactive more than a handful of times.

In a cost-cutting move, the Jets released Lawson who now gives depth to a Cowboys team searching for pass rush help.

Edge players Michah Parsons and Demarcus Lawrence are expected to carry most of the workload and rookie second-round pick Marshawn Kneeland will be part of the defensive line rotation. Behind those three, Dallas gets thin at the position. That is where Lawson is expected to help.

With 90 players already on the roster, the Cowboys had to free up a roster spot and moved offensive tackle Earl Bostick to injured reserve.

Bostick, an undrafted free agent out of Kansas in 2023, injured his right leg in practice which will reportedly require surgery.

NFL rosters must be trimmed down to 53 players before Tuesday, August 27 at 4 PM EST which doesn’t give Lawson much time to make a bid for a roster spot.

Carted Off: Cowboys lose another offensive tackle to injury

The Dallas Cowboys depth along the offensive line has appeared to be a strength so far this training camp. Even with the free agency loss of starters Tyron Smith and Tyler Biadasz, the youth at the position appeared to give Dallas a ton of configuration options. Things have started to sort themselves out but unfortunately some of that is due to injury.

The Cowboys lost Chuma Edoga, penciled in as the current LT1, on Sunday to a broken toe. That will leave him out for at least four weeks. And now there’s a second injury impacting the depth. Earl Bostick, a depth piece had to be carted off from the practice field on Wednesday as the club hosted the Los Angeles Rams for another intersquad scrimmage.

Bostick is one of six tackles on the Cowboys’ roster, not counting the handful of players who could play tackle but are primarily assigned to other positions. Third on the RT depth chart, it might not seem as if it’s a serious loss but it does hamper the workload of everyone else on the line.

Bostick is a 2023 UDFA out of Kansas. He’s 6-foot-6, 310 pounds and spent last year on the practice squad.

Cowboys’ offensive line already accounts for almost 25% of ’24 salary cap

Following the money spent on the offensive line finds Dallas’ depth impressive but two big holes have to be filled. | From @ArmyChiefW3

Budgeting for the offensive line is not an easy task as this group, whose numbers normally hover around 10 every season, can consume a large portion of a team’s salary cap. Even when only one player is paid top dollar, the amount of money spent on linemen can be a burden based on sheer numbers. With so many teams across the league scrambling for viable options, Dallas has assembled a cast of young hopefuls that could provide depth for the next few years.

The Cowboys will need to address the starting left tackle position this offseason, and although the upcoming draft is full of options, bringing back Tyron Smith could be the smart play. So could an agreement with center Tyler Biadasz, who is slated to hit the open market for the first time in his career. Here’s a rundown of what is currenly on the ledger for the group going into 2024.
