Lakers will waive Dylan Windler to sign Harry Giles III

Former first-round draft pick Dylan Windler will be waived by the Lakers so they can officially sign big man Harry Giles III.

The Los Angeles Lakers continue to suffer from a string of injuries to key players. Guard Gabe Vincent, forward Jarred Vanderbilt and big men Christian Wood and Colin Castleton are out with various ailments.

It has left the team thin at the forward and center positions. Vincent and Vanderbilt are arguably the Lakers’ two best perimeter defenders, while Wood is second on the team in rebounds per 36 minutes.

This week, forward Cam Reddish, who had been out for about a month with a sprained ankle, made his return, which helped L.A.’s depth. Perhaps as a result, it will waive Dylan Windler to make room for big man Harry Giles III, whom it is signing to a two-way contract.

Windler joined the Lakers on a two-way contract in early January. He appeared in eight games for them, playing a total of 28 minutes and making 4-of-8 shots from 3-point range.

Lakers have signed Dylan Windler to a two-way contract

The Lakers are taking a flyer on former first-round draft pick Dylan Windler.

The Los Angeles Lakers are, without question, reeling. They blew a 13-point lead on Friday and lost to the Memphis Grizzlies, a team that came in with an 11-23 record. The loss dropped the Lakers’ record to 17-19.

While many are pointing fingers at head coach Darvin Ham, it is clear the team needs one or two more productive players if it is to turn things around. Injuries have been a factor. Guard D’Angelo Russell and forward Rui Hachimura, two very capable offensive players, have been out lately.

On Saturday, the Lakers took a flyer on G League wing Dylan Windler, who had been playing for the Westchester Knicks.

Windler, who is 6 feet, 7 inches, was a first-round draft pick by the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2019. He missed all of his rookie season with a leg injury, and he spent three more years with the Cavs before appearing in three games with the New York Knicks this season.

He has career NBA averages of 3.2 points, 2.3 rebounds and 0.8 assists in 11.4 minutes while shooting 41.6% from the field and 32.5% from 3-point range.

To make room on their roster for Windler, the Lakers will reportedly waive big man Alex Fudge. They have also waived rookie guard D’Moi Hodge.

The team will face the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday evening.

Dylan Windler could make Cavaliers debut if the NBA returns in July

The 26th overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft has not played this season after undergoing leg surgery in January.

Cleveland Cavaliers rookie Dylan Windler has not played this season after undergoing leg surgery in January but that position could soon change depending on a few variables.

Of course, the 2019-20 NBA season has been suspended since March 11 due to the coronavirus pandemic. The league office is aiming to resume the season sometime in July at a single site location at the Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando, Florida.

However, what the season will look like at that time remains to be seen.

The NBA is discussing several potential options for a restart. In one scenario, all 30 teams will return to play regular-season games before starting the playoffs while another idea being discussed is to jump right into the playoffs in July.

Depending on how the NBA will decide to return, Windler could make his official debut. The Cavaliers were 19-46 prior to the season suspension and were in last place in the Eastern Conference. If the NBA decides to return straight into the playoffs, the Cavaliers would be among the teams not summoned to Orlando.

According to Chris Fedor of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Windler is a little more than a month away from returning. The Cavaliers initially had Windler penciled in to participate in the Las Vegas Summer League but due to the circumstances, the first-round pick could see his first action in a regular-season game if the NBA returns with all 30 teams.

While the NBA is still considering several options on a potential return to play scenario, the Cavaliers will be curious to see what plan the league office puts into place.

One silver lining of a disappointing season could be seeing the debut of Windler happen sooner than initially expected.

Cavaliers rookie Dylan Windler to undergo season-ending leg surgery

The first-round pick will not suit up this season with the Cavaliers after requiring surgery to address a stress reaction in his left leg.

Cleveland Cavaliers rookie Dylan Windler will undergo surgery to address a stress reaction in his left leg and will miss the remainder of the 2019-20 season, the team announced in a press release.

Windler is scheduled to have surgery on Jan. 21.

The first-round pick was diagnosed with a left tibial stress reaction in September and was initially expected to miss at least one month. The team and Windler opted to treat the injury with rehab, deciding against surgery at the time.

Windler first experienced the symptoms after a series of workouts before the start of training camp. After months of rehab, it was determined Windler will need surgery.

Windler played two games with the Canton Charge in the G League last month but was shut down following those appearances. He totaled 13 points and eight rebounds in 37 minutes of action.

After a stellar career at Belmont, Windler was on track to be a member of the Cavaliers’ rotation. Windler showed flashes in Summer League, averaging 10.7 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.5 assists in six games.
