Dylan Raiola expected to play against the USC Trojans

Dylan Raiola should be ready to go for the game against the USC Trojans.

Nebraska football quarterback Dylan Raiola is expected to be healthy to return for next week’s game against the USC Trojans. ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported this.

The quarterback left Saturday’s game against the UCLA Bruins in the fourth quarter after getting hit on a scramble. He finished the day with 177 yards on 14-of-27 passing, throwing a touchdown and an interception.

Raiola has 1,921 passing yards, 10 touchdowns, and eight interceptions on the season. He has struggled a bit over the last couple of weeks, throwing for two touchdowns and five interceptions in his last five games.

Raiola’s health will be worth monitoring over the next couple of weeks. The Huskers are still searching for that sixth win to clinch their opportunity at a bowl game, and a healthy Raiola is certainly important for the Huskers to reach that milestone.

UCLA football upsets Nebraska for second-straight Big Ten win

The Bruins survived on Saturday to take down their second-straight Big Ten opponent.

The UCLA Bruins have back-to-back wins for the first time in the 2024 college football season. Taking down their second-straight Big Ten opponent, UCLA upset Nebraska on the road 27-20 to improve to 3-5 on the season.

Behind a productive performance by all three units, the Bruins offense, defense, and special teams played in perfect unison, never trailing in the game for a second.

The Bruins started the day strong, owning the time of possession and holding Nebraska to only two yards in the first quarter. A pair of field goals and a touchdown pass later, the Bruins held a narrow but pronounced 13-7 lead.

In the second half, the Bruins kept piling it on. Linebacker Kain Medrano intercepted Cornhusker quarterback Dylan Raiola and returned it for a 38-yard pick-six, and shortly after, Bruins quarterback Ethan Garbers tossed his second touchdown to wideout Kwazi Gilmerpass to give the Bruins a 27-14 lead. Despite a late surge by the Cornhuskers, UCLA’s defense stiffened to secure the win with a game-sealing pick by cornerback Kaylin Moore.

Garbers put together another nice game through the air and on the ground, combining for 275 yards on 17-25 passing with two touchdowns.

Capitalizing on the over-aggressiveness of the Cornhusker defense, offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy’s use of play-action and misdirection proved to be a winning, on-the-fly strategy for the Bruins offense all game long.

But the most notable takeaway from the Bruins win was that head coach DeShaun Foster, for the second week in a row, had his players ready to go on the road. With four winnable games remaining for UCLA, bowl eligibility could be on the table for the surging 2024 Bruins.

DeShaun Foster sees Patrick Mahomes comparisons in Nebraska’s Dylan Raiola

Foster says Dylan Raiola reminds him of somebody.

As UCLA prepares to take on the Nebraska Cornhuskers in Week 10, the biggest storyline is Cornhuskers quarterback Dylan Raiola.

The former Georgia commit changed course and decided to come to Lincoln and has gotten off to a strong start in his freshman season.

Raiola has thrown for 1,744 yards with nine touchdowns and seven interceptions as Nebraska has a 5-3 record. The last two weeks have not gone well for Raiola, however. He has a combined zero touchdowns and four interceptions in back-to-back losses, albeit against ranked teams Indiana and Ohio State, both on the road.

On Monday, UCLA head coach DeShaun Foster even said Raiola reminds him of Patrick Mahomes, who Foster worked with during his time at Texas Tech (h/t Tracy McDannald of Rivals).

“UCLA head coach DeShaun Foster said he can see the comparisons made between Nebraska QB Dylan Raiola and Kansas City Cheifs star Patrick Mahomes. Foster was a running backs coach for the Red Raiders when Mahomes was there.”

Raiola reminding Foster of Mahomes is quite the comparison and could make things problematic for UCLA in Lincoln.

Nebraska quarterback Dylan Raiola confident in future following loss

Dylan Raiola remained upbeat following Saturday’s loss.

Nebraska football quarterback Dylan Raiola remains upbeat about the program despite a frustrating 21-17 loss to the Ohio State Buckeyes on Saturday.

Raiola performed admirably against a stout Buckeyes defense. He went 21-of-32 on the afternoon, throwing for 152 yards and an interception. He averaged 4.8 yards per pass, with a 33-yard pass being the longest of the afternoon. The Ohio State defensive line gave him trouble, but he was able to make several big plays over the course of the afternoon.

This marks two straight losses for Nebraska as they look to regroup next week against UCLA. The freshman is feeling comfortable with where the program is despite the loss.

“I couldn’t be more proud of where we’re headed.”

The program is still searching for that elusive sixth win, and playing the Bruins next week could give them that opportunity. Next week’s game is also the beginning of a crucial stretch, with Wisconsin and Iowa rounding out the year.

Offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield discusses Dylan Raiola’s mindset

Marcus Satterfield indicated Dylan Raiola is confident heading into this weekend’s game against Ohio State.

Nebraska football offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield discussed quarterback Dylan Raiola’s struggles on Tuesday. The program looks to right the ship this Saturday against the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Raiola has struggled over the past two games. He has thrown for 368 yards and four interceptions over that stretch. His 94.7 quarterback rating on Saturday against Indiana and 82.4 rating against Rutgers the week before have been his lowest of the season.

All told, he is still having a decent year. He has thrown for 1,592 yards, nine touchdowns, and six interceptions. The true freshman has hit a bit of a roadblock after a hot start to the year.

Satterfield discussed Raiola’s confidence level heading into Saturday.

“Super confident. He’s not swayed at all. He understands, he’d like to have some of those throws back. Coach (White) said it best, it’s one day, we got punched in the face, we don’t just quit now. We keep fighting and we keep working, we’re building something special here.”

It will be interesting to see if Raiola and Satterfield can make any adjustments on Saturday as they face their stiffest test yet. Nebraska is still searching for its sixth win as it looks to make it back to a bowl game.

Joel Klatt believes another weapon could elevate the Husker offense

Joel Klatt believes another weapon could help Dylan Raiola.

College football analyst Joel Klatt gave high praise to Nebraska freshman quarterback Dylan Raiola last Thursday. The praise came before the Huskers were blown out by the Indiana Hoosiers 56-7.

Raiola has been a dynamic addition to the Nebraska football offense this season. The freshman has recorded 1,592 passing yards, nine touchdowns, and six interceptions.

Klatt noted that Raiola has been one of the program’s biggest improvements, but he could use one more offensive piece to help him advance to the next level.

“If Raiola ever got a threat (on the outside) this Nebraska team would be incredible.”

Nebraska has undoubtedly upgraded their weapons this season, with transfers Jahmal Banks (Wake Forest) and Isaiah Neyor (Wyoming & Texas) being two of the major additions to the offense. Even still, it is interesting to think about what the quarterback could do with an additional outside wide receiver.

Rutgers coach Greg Schiano praises quarterback Dylan Raiola

Greg Schiano is impressed with Dylan Raiola

Rutgers Scarlet Knights head coach Greg Schiano praised Nebraska quarterback Dylan Raiola during his press conference on Wednesday. Schiano will face the quarterback for the first time as Rutgers looks to improve their record to 5-0 on the year.

Raiola has been as good as advertised for the Huskers, throwing for 1,224 yards, nine touchdowns, and two interceptions. He is coming off an efficient game against Purdue last Saturday, in which he threw 257 yards and a touchdown.

Now, he will face a tough Scarlet Knights defense that ranks in the middle of the Big Ten with 179.5 passing yards allowed per game.

In the meantime, Rutgers and Schiano know the challenge they are up against. The coach gave the quarterback a strong review.

“The command that he has of their offense is, good for any level, but for a freshman is unheard of. He is a very gifted athlete you know, he’s big, he’s mobile. He can throw on the move, he can throw from the pocket. There’s not much this guy can’t do, but that’s why he was such a highly-recruited quarterback, right? He’s got all the tools.”

Husker fans hope that all those tools will be on display Saturday afternoon. It will be another challenge for the Huskers, who are looking to win their second conference game in a row.

Sooners face rival in latest USA TODAY Sports Bowl Projections

The Oklahoma Sooners fave a rival in USA TODAY Sports updated bowl projections.

The Oklahoma Sooners are hoping to bounce back as they get ready to go on the road to face the Auburn Tigers. The Sooners are coming off a disappointing loss to the Tennessee Volunteers but showed some things they can build on moving forward.

The updated ESPN Matchup Predictor projects the Sooners to finish the season 6-6, would put them just inside bowl season. It’s a difficult schedule the rest of the way, and the Sooners will have to find a way to beat one of the ranked teams remaining on the schedule to ensure a spot in bowl season.

But as things stand right now, college football analysts still have the Sooners bowling in December. Erick Smith of USA TODAY Sports has the Oklahoma Sooners heading to Nashville, Tenn., to play in the Music City Bowl. And they’ll face an old rival. Smith projects the Sooners to face the Nebraska Cornhuskers on Dec. 30.

The Oklahoma Sooners last faced the Nebraska Cornhuskers in a home-and-home in 2021 and 2022. The Sooners won in Norman 23-16, highlighted by D.J. Graham’s one-handed interception. In 2022, Brent Venables’ first season at the helm, the Sooners beat the Cornhuskers 49-10, led by [autotag]Eric Gray[/autotag]’s 110 rushing yards and two touchdown performance.

If the two sides were to face off in bowl season, it could be a matchup between a pair of true freshmen quarterbacks, [autotag]Michael Hawkins[/autotag] and Dylan Raiola. Hawkins takes over for Jackson Arnold ahead of the Sooners road trip to Auburn. Raiola was named the starting quarterback out of fall camp.

Raiola has looked good for Nebraska, completing 72.2% of his passes for 967 yards, eight touchdowns, and just two interceptions. Hawkins, in his first season in Norman, is completing 59.1% of his passes for 149 yards and a touchdown.

OU and Nebraska is a rivalry as old as there is. The two sides first played in 1912, a 13-9 win for the Cornhuskers. Oklahoma holds the all-time series lead 47-38-3. A rivalry that was at one point one of the biggest in college football has only seen the two teams play twice since Nebraska joined the Big Ten back in 2011.

Nebraska quarterback Dylan Raiola makes history in Saturday’s win

Dylan Raiola continues to impress on the field.

Nebraska football quarterback Dylan Raiola made history in Saturday’s 34-3 win over Northern Iowa. He went 17-of-23 on the afternoon, throwing for 247 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. He is the first Nebraska quarterback to complete at least 70% of his passes in three straight games since Jeff Quinn in 1980.

Quinn threw for 1,337 yards, 14 touchdowns and six interceptions during the 1980 season. Raiola is on pace for a successful year. He has tallied 670 passing yards, five touchdowns and an interception as Nebraska has started 3-0 for the first time since the 2016 season.

It seems as though the program is taking down records by the week. They are rewriting the program’s culture and makeup in the process. Raiola is an important part of that as he continues to develop. Nebraska will face Illinois this Friday at 7 p.m. CT.
