Expert score prediction: Nebraska vs. Purdue

How do you think the Huskers will do?

Nebraska closed out the first quarter of the 2024 season on a sour note, falling to No. 24 Illinois in overtime after one too many miscues once again caused their downfall.

The main two issues were not stopping Illinois’ passing game and botching one offensive drive that saw a touchdown and a field goal slip through its fingers.

Now, the Huskers hit the road for the first time this season, needing to respond to the loss to the Fighting Illini. Their matchup against Purdue could do just that, as this is the Boilermakers’ third straight game facing an opponent coming off a rough loss at home.

Notre Dame blew out Purdue 66-7 after losing to Northern Illinois, and then they lost to Oregon State 38-21 after the Beavers were demolished 49-14 by Oregon.

The Husker’s offense could have a field day against Purdue both on the ground and the air.

Oregon State decimated the Boilermakers in the run game, rushing for 341 yards off 51 attempts for four touchdowns while throwing ten completions off 18 passes for 104 yards.

Now, Purdue is set to face Dylan Raiola, who’s averaging almost 21 completions and 241.8 passing yards per game. This, along with the Huskers averaging 140.5 rushing yards per game, gives the Boilermakers a big test defensively.

But last week showed that Nebraska’s defense versus Purdue’s offense could be the deciding factor. The Huskers had no answers for Luke Altmyer in the Illinois loss, allowing the senior to throw 21-of-27 for 215 yards and four touchdowns, with most of his incompletions being simple drops by receivers.

Hudson Card for Purdue was quiet in the loss to Oregon State, throwing for 7-of-17 for 56 yards, a touchdown, and an interception.

The Boilermakers stuck to the ground game, going for 263 total yards and two touchdowns. Purdue scored two touchdowns late in the game on the ground after breaking out big runs against the Beavers.

Nebraska needs to keep Card from exploiting its passing struggles, but it can’t let the Boilermakers run it down its throats, either. If the Huskers’ offense continues to thrive and the defense delivers a solid bounce-back game, this first road game should favor Nebraska.

Score Prediction: Nebraska 31, Purdue 17

Nebraska football to host 2026 QB Dayton Raiola this weekend

A class of 2026 recruit is heading to Lincoln for a visit this weekend.

A class of 2026 recruit is heading to Lincoln for a visit this weekend. Quarterback Dayton Raiola, brother of current Husker Dylan Raiola, is coming to Nebraska on July 27.

Dayton received an offer from Nebraska during his freshman year at Chandler High School in Arizona in 2022. He also received offers from Appalachian State and Charlotte in January 2024. Dayton now enters his junior year at Buford High School in Georgia, preparing to play on the varsity level for the first time.

Dayton sat behind his brother through his freshman year at Chandler and his sophomore year at Buford, playing JV in both seasons. Dylan Raiola threw for 2,666 yards, 34 touchdowns, and just one interception.

Dayton appeared in only six varsity games last season at Buford. He finished 6-of-16 passing for 60 yards and one touchdown. The left-handed quarterback currently stands at 6 feet, 1 inch, and 205 pounds entering his junior year.

Nebraska to host top 2024 recruit Dylan Raiola for a visit soon

Raiola has multiple family connections at Nebraska.

The No. 1 ranked prospect in the class of 2024 is Arizona quarterback Dylan Raiola, who decommitted from Ohio State in mid-December. Since then several schools have been reported to be in the mix to get him, with Georgia considered the consensus favorite. Raiola poured gasoline on that fire when he complimented the program for winning their second straight National Championship, calling the Bulldogs the “cream of the crop” in college football.

However, Raiola hasn’t made his decision yet and there is at least one other serious contender to land his commitment. That would be the University of Nebraska, which he will be visiting soon. On3 says the visit will take place on March 25.

Raiola has multiple family connections at Nebraska, where his uncle serves as the offensive line coach under Matt Rhule. Raiola’s father Dominic also played his college ball for the Cornhuskers.

It appears to be a two-horse race in Raiola’s recruitment. According to Rivals’ prediction model, Georgia has a 56% chance of getting him and Nebraska 44%. Meanwhile, On3’s machine has Georgia at 33%, Nebraska at 28.3% and also includes USC (22.3%) and Ohio State (14.2%) as in the running.

According to 247Sports, 29 schools all together have made offers.

Raiola is in the process of transferring from Chandler high school to Pinnacle, where he will play his Senior season.

Recapping weekend visit from top 2024 prospect

It was an interesting weekend for Nebraska Football!!

Nebraska football hosted multiple recruits during Saturday’s loss to Illinois, including the top recruit in the class of 2024. Ohio State commit Dylan Raiola and his brother, class of 2026 quarterback Dayton Raiola both out of Chandler, Arizona, were guests of Mickey Joseph and company over the weekend. The Raiola brothers have multiple Husker connections. Their father, Dominic Raiola, was an All-American center at Nebraska and won the school’s only Rimington Trophy (College Football’s Most Outstanding Center). In addition, their uncle, Donovan Raiola, is currently the offensive line coach for Nebraska.

Dylan Raiola last visited Nebraska during the spring game earlier this year and verbally committed to Ohio State in May. There’s no genuine belief that Dylan Raiola is looking to flip his commitment. He more than likely was joining his younger brother on his visit since receiving his first scholarship offer from the Huskers back on October 26. However, that did not stop fans and media alike from speculating on the possibility of a change of heart for the No. 1 recruit before reaching signing day, which is still a ways away for a 2024 prospect.

There will undoubtedly be more talk and speculation on the future of Dylan and Dayton Raiola, so stay tuned to Cornhuskers Wire for the latest. Below is a social media recap of the Raiola brother’s visit.
