Pistons coach Dwane Casey impressed with Sixers guard Tyrese Maxey

Detroit Pistons coach Dwane Casey is very impressed with Philadelphia 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey.

PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia 76ers are led by a star duo of Joel Embiid and James Harden, but one young player is making a case that the Sixers actually have a Big 3.

Second-year guard Tyrese Maxey has taken huge steps forward with the team as a 21-year old kid. After scoring 25 points in Sunday’s win over the Detroit Pistons, he finished the season averaging 17.5 points on 48.5% shooting and 42.7% from deep.

Before the game, Pistons coach Dwane Casey was impressed with the way Maxey has taken big steps forward on a veteran team with title plans.

“Love him. He’s a Kentucky guy so I’m a Kentucky guy, he’s a Kentucky, no, but he’s really grown,” said Casey. “From where he’s started last year, his growth is really good to see, and I’ve told him that before. I’m really proud of the way he’s grown, he played well last year, he’s quick on quick, and he’s creating a scoring personality off of James and off of Embiid.”

Coach Doc Rivers put the ball in Maxey’s hands from the jump in the 2021-22 season and he did not blink at all. He has taken leaps and bounds forward, and he has made further adjustments playing next to Harden. It is clear he has an All-Star future.

“He’s learning how to play with those guys,” Casey said. “He’s learning how to play with Harden and that’s difficult to do for a young player. Going into a veteran team and he’s done an excellent job. He’s earned coach’s trust, it seems like, so really happy to see Tyrese grow into the role he’s in on a playoff and championship-caliber team.”

More on this storyline

James Edwards on Marvin Bagley’s future: What Detroit has to consider is they have a lot of cap space this summer. They can choose to have a lot of cap space next summer. Blake Griffin’s contract comes off the books this summer. Do you want to commit three years, $21 million, or so to Marvin? I think it’s possible. I think Detroit wants to have Marvin here long-term. I’ve talked to him. Every time he talks about Detroit, he talks about his future here. He’s a good locker room and a nice guy. He fits the culture. I think Detroit’s plan is to bring him back. In what role? I think right now, it seems most likely, because of his limitations defensively, he’s going to be looked at as one of the main two pieces off the bench moving forward. -via HoopsHype / March 24, 2022
